Monder if you can help....

I had an incident with a broken condom 3 months ago....

Decided not to test as my doctor said that the chance of transmsission through vaginal sex is slim and with a broken condom even more so. And the girl assured me that she was negative and I believed her. No symptoms other than the odd head ache and stomach problems. Until now.... I work in africa and the mosquitos are rife. Not a problem. I know you cannot get hiv through mosquitos. However my bites are getting inflamed and this has never happened before. SO now the worry is setting in. Should go test I am sure but not too happy with the local facilities and would just worry bout the needles and the accuracy of the tests in dark africa.

Let's see if I can decipher what you said. With vaginal sex it is slim and more so with a broken condom. No not quite. With a correctly used condom, no risk, No condom, big risk. Broken condom, not a high risk nor is it a nil risk. You said the girl assured you that she was negative and you believed her. Well apparently you didn't, or you wouldn't be here asking questions. You can't go by what someone tells you, or their looks or how they dress. The only way to know for sure of someone’s status is when you and that person test at the same time together. Your symptoms mean nothing. Test at anytime now to get you conclusive status.

The tests used in Africa are just as acurate as anywhere else. Ask at the facility near you if they have the oral swab tests if you're worried about needles.

You say you're working in Africa, is it safe to assume you're a European? Most Europeans working in Africa have access to testing facilities through the agency or company they are with and it might be a good idea for you to check this out.

You do need to test, although the odds are in your favour of testing negative.

After my post earlier I decided enough was enough and went to look for a suitable place to get tested.

They tested me on the spot with what the doctor said was an extremely accurate test and swears by it.I was actually very supried as they knew exactly what was going on and what to do. No confusion whatsover. Pin prick to the finger ten minutes later my result.

Negative.

It has been 88 days since my possible exposure not quite 3 months. Can I take this result as conclusive?

Yes, happily you are conclusively HIV negative. Period. End of story.

Make sure the latex condoms you are using fit you properly and use one everytime you have intercourse. No exceptions no matter what you think you know about your partner's history.
