Stage 2 CKD
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:53:39 pm »
Got my lab results today.

More bad news for the Kidneys. Getting rid of the Truvada 3 months ago failed to rectify my problem. My GFR has dropped to 61, down from '70' 3 mos ago, and '79' 7 mos ago. Doc also said there were some other indicators in my labs indicating Kidney problems (my eyes glazed over so I forgot what they were).

So officially I am "Stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease", which in and of itself is not terribly bad, what is bad is that I am rather quickly heading to stage 3 and possibly 4 and further if I stay on the same rate of decline.

So she gave me a big red biohazzard jug to pee into for 24 hours straight, which I have to take to the lab on Monday. she also is referring me to a Kidney doctor for a Sonogram and most likely a biopsy. Looks like I will eventually have to go on a "Kidney diet" to slow or stop the decline which means very little or no meat, and zero salt. BOOO! HISSS!

This really Sux. blah.  :-\

Otherwise CD4 is 771, UD, 41%. and Testo is normal finally, everything else is normal.

In other news-  Monday was 2 months since my last cigarette!   8)

Dang, sorry to hear about the kidney issues Will -

Yeah, you may have to limit the salt intake a lot (especially the fast food  :'( )   --- I use regular seasonings for cooking - but try to limit those w/ sodium --- I also, very very rarely add salt to anything anymore (I figure I get enough of it that is already on the food and definitely on the food when I eat out).

Glad to hear your other labs are looking good.

Also, congrats on two months without cigarettes - that is a major accomplishment.

Remember, that even though you are at Stage 2 - having read up on it a bit, it doesn't always progress quickly to Stage 3 or 4 ---- especially, if you address it with dietary and other lifestyle changes.

Best to you---------

Sorry to learn this. Sounds like you've got good care providers -- that's important. And, since your sense of humor is wonderfully nuts, I'm envisioning a helluva fight!

Sorry to hear that but you seem like a positive kinda of guy and determined, you have quit smoking! You can certainly beat this bad news. And on a side note, you need to remember that you "quit" vs. stopped, and congratulations! As for the no salt, no meat diet, lay off on the "cookbook" recipes you were so instrumental in completing. Thinking very good thoughts for you!

Hi Will

My GFR went down below 60 and I came off the Tenofovir, took a couple of months but my results went back up to an almost normal range...sorry you are having all this to worry about.

What was the outcome of the "Creatinine Clearance" test (24 hr Urine)?

Hmm, Jan that's interesting. I hope maybe its just a delayed reaction after coming off the Tenofir, but it's been almost 4 months since I stopped it.  :-\

I havent done the 24 hour urine yet, I will start it sunday morning, and take it to the lab on monday. But my Creatine level today was 7.6 or 76, one of those, but whichever it wasnt good.

So it begins...I guess i thought I was going to stay healthy forever. Grrrrrrr!

Will,

Sorry to hear this news.  Sounds like your doc is on top of it -- of course, you must LISTEN to him and FOLLOW his advice.  Here is hoping you bounce back like Lady Jan did.....

As for your smoking-- Congratu-fucking-lations.  I know how tough it is.
Now it is all in your head -- so anytime you think you want a smoke -- just tell yourself that you can -- in 1 hour.  1 hour later, if you still want it, put it off another hour.  These cravings come and go, so hold fast until it goes.

Hugs,
Mike

Thanks Mike, amazingly I have had very few cravings hardly any at all. I'm surprised at how easy it has been for me, although I know it can get tougher at anytime. But honestly I think the reason it has been so easyfor me  is seeing my mother currently struggling with her lung cancer. It's my own personal PSA announcement that I see every day.

I'm also amazed at how much energy Ive gotten since quitting, it;'s like night and day.

Well done Will, and it does get easier it just takes time, it will be 3 years smoke free for me and a certain handsome young man from NC on the 1st of November...I've put on weight, more than I bloody wanted too, but it's better than struggling with other smoke related illnesses...and I had to do it on Doctors orders.

Let me know when you get your results from the Creatinine Clearance test.

Ugh you frustrate me when you don't take notes at your doctor's appointments.  I swear I need to come with you as stenographer.  Sorry to hear it wasn't the truvada as culprit in this case, maybe the jug will help.  Pee real good for the doctor! :)

Finally saw the Renal Doc today.

Loved her. She said I had "pretty urine"  :-*

Anyways, good news. Looks like my GFR has not gotten any worse and according to her looks like it is leveling out and may go back to normal over time. She was able to rule out all the major stuff and believes the Truvada (duh) is what caused this and my Kidneys are just taking awhile to get back on track. I see her again in 6 months with another 24 hour urine collection, in the meantime my ID will continue to monitor kidney function.

Other than cutting back on salt and drinking more water, there will be no dietary restrictions for now. Thank God cause yall know how I like my fast food.

So hopefully I will be like Jan and rebound back. This is such a relief as I have lost alot of sleep over this kidney thing

Alas, there is life after Truvada.
