Buyers Clubs
« on: March 11, 2007, 12:19:33 pm »
I was thanked for listing newyorkbuyersclub.org as a source for nutrients and imformation about nutrients specifically for those impacted by HIV and Meds. So I thought I would post buyerclubs that we can use to purchase discounted and hopefully quality supps.

I currently purchase the bulk of my supps from newyorkbuyersclub.org. They are a non-profit 501c.

------

I did some research and found this listing from poz magazine online. poz.com

It is a listing from 1998, but I think you get the idea. for Example DAAIR has essentially become the newyorkbuyersclub.org.

These organizations are often Non-profit, and are here to help us. While the use of supplements may be controverial, I tend to believe that the power of the community thought process for evaluating supplements is something to be aware of. One should exercise caution as these substances can interact with medications. newyorkbuyersclub.org goes the extra step to point these out where possible. They also publish a pamphlet about all the commonly used supps and what they are for.

For example, the use of glutamine goes beyond a recovery drink for exercise, it is often used to help digestive issues associated with meds, specifically diarreha. It is also used as a gut maintenance sup to keep things working well. Their Multi that they have designed is also something to consider. Chelated and complete with B complex, trace minerals and 200mcg of Selenium. With and without IRON!

If there are other up to date buyers clubs out there, I think that would be good to share. So if you know of them, please add to the list.

thank you.

Buyers Clubs

Discount drugs and HIV resources for PWAs
Buyers clubs offer important resources for obtaining treatment and information about different treatment options. They specialize in various services including experimental and imported drugs and nutritional supplements. In several cases, these offerings are accompanied by treatment-related services, including advocacy for broader access. They can also serve as a way to meet other PWAs who can help in making treatment decisions.

It's great to use supplements, but I'm afraid that people swallow most of them without really understanding what they're for and may "overdose" on some. I think it would be great to add the expected benefits of each supplement. For example, I don't need a supplement that will make me sleep like a baby, I already sleep like a baby, I don't need one that will boost my muscle mass because i'm already taking protein shakes that may "overdose" me. Also look at the ingredients on the bottles, the antioxidant that you take may already be there in another bottle. When I see things like "2000%" over the "normal" dose of Vitamin C, I'm wondering what is this 2000% going to do for me, and why is 2000% better than 200% or 100%.

right on!

Much of the time I'm making, hopefully educated guesses as to how to supplement myself. Hell, its not like a doctor know anything about supplements for the most part, their specialization is medicines! And Herbs, who the heck really knows!

The first rule I think is, what is the potential toxicity of the supplement?

While certain water soluble supps are  more or less pissed away, and we try to keep them around so when the body can use them they are there in abundance, the fat soluble ones or the ones that have to be processed by the liver deserve more attention.

The supps that I willingly take that give me some pause are:

Selenium Supplement in my Vitamin. Recent studies show that while Selenium may have a anti HIV effect and boost the immune system, other affects may be noted.

Vitamin D - I have good feelings about Vitamin D in the winter months for sure. I also think that its really easy to take too much when spending a fair amount of outdoor time in the spring/summer/fall outdoor season in the north east.

7-Keto-DHEA, I'm now on 100 mg of what is essentially a legal over the counter synthetic steroid hormone. I will say that since I changed brands to Douglas, that I'm really noticing the effects of a significant increase in libido. I've been taking 7 keto dhea for years, but only recently at this dosage. Is it a good thing? I feel I'm taking a chance on this, but I'm also thinking that there is some societal hysteria regarding steroids in general.

I am taking ASTRAGALUS because I was desperate. My CD4 was at 374 and I could feel the time coming for meds. Immune modulation, whatever that means, I've been taking it and my CD4 rebounded a bit.

Green Tea Extract ECGC - I'm taking a high dose, equal to about a dozen cups of green tea. Rumours about ECGC really boosting immune system. Is it a good thing to supercharge ones immune system? Can there be a rebound effect. Am I hoping for a bump today only to give it up shortly and more. That's the issue I have with ECGC. I test in september. Will I get a significant bump?

I don't even bother taking C or E anymore as my multi has it covered. As you said, how much do I really need, and do I really need all that extra.

These are questions everyone should ask.
When the old forum was up I had posted several items about different supplements/vitamins that help people with HIV in various ways.
Because of the limited space of that forum articles were constantly being deleted after so lone so I took the information and put it on a web site so others could see it and use it for their benefit.
I have a list of several buyers clubs there also, of course that list originally came from Tim Horn who posted it years ago and I just took some time to update the info to make sure it still was correct.
Milker, remember to listen to your body before you pop some pills, most people don't and just do it because they read an article someplace on it or they stop taking a supplement that is benefiting them because of someone writing an article downing it for their own personal agenda.

Even though I'm not on here like I used to be I have checked to make sure the site was still up there and that the links on my profile would take you to it.

One thing many people forget is that our bodies are all different and what may benefit one person may not be good for another, that is why it's extremely important to research whatever it is you want to try and to make sure it will not interact with any type of medication your currently taking and then to make sure whatever supplement or vitamin your going to take in what your body really needs. To do this you have to in-tune with yourself.
Your doctor nor anyone else can do that for you, you have to be able to do it. It just means listening to your body not overdoing something and taking things gradually.
I'm afraid instant gratification does not work in this area.
