Hey Sasa, if I go back to work I want to be treated as a dying man. I want special treatment because I have AIDS. Plain and simple. I can't stomach the thought of losing CD4 because of ignorant, conniving office scorpions >:( who know nothing about HIV and who won't hesitate to stress me out for their own personal gain. So in answer to your question, no, I do not work right now because I have AIDS

You ok All?  The last post doesnt seem like you to me.   You WANT people to treat you differently because you have AIDS?  Isnt that the stigma we are fighting?

I work full time and go to school full time.  Had HIV for about 6 years and hope to keep working until they pull my last paycheck out of my cold t-cell-less hand!  I would go crazy not keeping myself as busy as possible tho I am sure one day it just might happen.

I used to go to public school fulltime and now I'm homeschooled full time and I'm currently on the look out for a job(s).

2 1/2 years into it and I've only had the chance to use HIV to get out of school occasionally (... some days I was less sick than others, wahaha). Hey! If anything I deserve days off out of the deal, so I don't want to hear anything about it.  ;D

good/interesting point you make about stigma in the workplace. right now i'm feeling a little too irascible to type a coherent post

i think i want a poz boss, and at least one poz co-worker, which is a pretty tall order if i go back to "melrose place" wall street. i just think concessions should be made for hiv positive people who work, e.g., extra sick days. am i nuts?

If you need concessions, by law they have to make them for you (assuming they are reasonable).  I don't want to be treated differently simply because I'm HIV positive.  Wall Street may not be the place for you.  But there are plenty of other streets in America.

I used to work like crazy (I mean really, really nuts) and put all this huge amount of money on my savings account until two years ago.  Then, all of a sudden, I went into a severe depression 'cause my t-cells were diminishing by the hour.
So, I decided to quit my job on the spot one day  and  right in front of my boss,  who would not let me do it!   Anyway, I  really slowed things down for a bit.

Today, I am living the most agreable life ever 'cause I'm getting used to my sabbatical.  And I am still wondering  whether I'll ever go back to work again, since during the 25 years that I worked I managed to become...you know, well-off!  My boss still tells me that the position is mine whenever I feel ready to go back, and  that  is a nice feeling!

hi sasa39

replied to your other post about brainfog... but here's my recent thoughts on work... I have started to realize that  the stress is having a really adverse effect not only on my happiness but on my health... and of course how these two are related... strange how it took so long to realize something so simple! I have started looking for other work for when this contract finishes. Looking for some small institution thats not a pressure cooker. It will be a huge dip in salary but the time has come to make a quality of life decision. I also need a place where I can take an hour or two off if I need to rest and hopefully an employer that is knowledgeable about HIV in the workplace and the needs we sometimes have. Preferential treatment, no, understanding and compassion, yes, just as we would expect for any other person. I would love to take a year off...and do all those things I have put off doing... so I have started planning for that in the near future...

I've been working since I was 17 years old. Been positive since I was 20. Now I'm 43. Working gets my mind off my hiv but I would love to win the lottery and get a part time job in a plant nursery or something relaxing.

I have AIDS (thanks PCP) and work full time.  I also stay busy pretty much from the time I get home from work 'til I go to bed.  I do want special treatment because I have AIDS... my own parking space at work!  I hate hunting for somewhere to park and then having to walk from a distant space when it's rainy (like today).

I've worked full time since I was 18. HIV didn't slow me down until I was in my late 30s (ten years ago), and then it was just a bump. I worked my hardest and made the most money in my early 40s and on HAART, but a combination of factors (some HIV-related, others not so much) have prevented me from picking up my career again down here in SoFla.

I am currently underemployed for my skills but overemployed for my energy levels. I work very very hard and make not so much money for it, thanks to income restrictions due to my dependence on Ryan White for medical care and meds.

Hello,

Just about 22 years into HIV, with my aids diagnosis back in 2003. I am still working full time, Am very seldom under the weather, that I need to take any time off from work. I got a good record of attendance. Even back in 2003 when I had 16 t-cells and looked like death, I managed to get to work. I think I missed about 4 days of work back then.

I am not able to do the same work that I had done for many years , because of PN, but I still work.

I am also very grateful that I am able to work, but understand that the day will come, when that may not be possible.

But until then... It would take a sledge hammer across both knee caps to keep me down !

Yes I work, even at my lowest health point. I went down at one point to 60 t cells as my doctors have finally revealed. But for me it was a lifesaver, because psychologically it was and is still what I need, and I found the strength to continue, and faced the questions of why I looked so bad. However I understand those that are not able to and agree with their choice to not work to save their t-cells, their health their lives. I will begrudge anyonewho honestly is not physically or emotionally fit for work.

Well I was on disability before being dagnosed, but was aloud to work part-time.Then I said to myself screw ths I can't survive on this shit I'm gonna go back full time. Then I was dignosed and a few mo later went into full blown.Went on meds t-cells  went up and vl was undetectabl. So I continued to work alot after that.I didn't care how much pain I was in or how ill I felt.
Went back to doc 3-4mo. later t-cells srarted dropping, doc told me to stop working,I had to many health issues an if I wanted to live longer that I would do what he said,so now here I am home. Now I go to school on line,to keep myself busy, and I need to be around for my girls.they are still too young to lose there mother.
Always feel like I have to explain myself for not working or collecting a check,I some time feel guilty for that.Anyone else feel that way sometime?

I think SASA worries too much.  Go back to work.  Stop worrying about every rash you get.  Stop worrying about the GUILT  and SHAME.  Sometimes you need to do what is right.  I dont think the right thing for you is to feed your fears by being in this forum asking questions which are ultimately meaningless.
SASA I understand that you have a difficult situatuon where you are, but you are only making it worse for yourself by what you are doing to yourself.

Thank you, Bear, very much!  Oh God, I don't know what to do anymore to make Alexander (SASA39) calm down.   Last Saturday, we've spent close to two hours on the phone, and the two points that I attempted to inculcate in his head was exactly what you've just mentioned.
Now, Alexander is having a very hard time with this diagnosis and promised me he would relax and try to get things done one at a  time.  He reminds me of my own reaction when I first found out I was positive.
There is also another very important, delicate details in all this:  "Serbia is no pic-nic in this sense"! The country is still behind and lacks just about everything we, in Europe, take for granted.
Sorry, Alexander, for opening up here!  I do think people will understand you better now...

Val....You are a good person to try to help SASA.  I think you are correct in saying that he needs to take ONE thing at a time, calm down and stop worrying about EVERYTHING AT ONCE.  Worrying about everthing is not good and will wear down even the stongest person ....and he seems to be able to understand that he is making it worse for himself.

SASA:
Though I don't know your personal situation may I recommend to please discard the guilt and shame thing immediately. It does you no good and you must focus on your health no matter what anybody else may think of you in your country. You will prevail like we are doing here on this forum and I myself overcame that same mental block when I became positive back in the 80's when people here in my country (small minded many still) thought you had to be either a drug addict or a promiscuous dirty homosexual waiting on dark corners in the streets and screwing uncontrollably. I also felt that uncomfortable feeling for some time but I worked on "me" more than what I thought people were going to think of me. Eventually, I sent everybody to hell (in my mind)and that was 21 years ago and here I am healthy and still working. I've been through the rollercoaster of life with hiv during these years but things do calm down in your mind, body, and spirit. I wish you the best, dear. :-*

I'm still going strong with less than 200 tcells but our bodies all respond to treatment and infection differently from what I have learned an. This thread did depress me a bit about working with HIV but its going to be alright.
