Southern Spring Gathering

Since we have several forum members in the Southern U.S. would anyone be interested in a Regional Southern Spring Gathering sometime in May this year?  Maybe Atlanta GA, Birmingham AL, or Charlotte NC? Of course this would be open to all forum members that can or would want to  attend. Just an idea Lisa and I were throwing around on the phone a few days ago.

Sounds like a possibility, but D and my weekends (the holiday weekends, anyway) are pretty much full.  Let's see what those of us in the South can figure out.

I would be interested also -- depending on when, of course.
I'm from Richmond, VA -- so my vote would be for Charlotte (of the three choices given).

I just threw those locations out as suggestions. Not many people have resoonded to this idea yet. Hopefully they will in the next few days.

How does mid May sound to you? I thought it would be a good time of year. It won't be very humid then & not many people doing the vacation thing yet.

May can get kind of hectic for me since I'm in K-12 education but if you get something planned I'd do my best to get there if possible.  Even though I'm officially from St. Louis, my place of work (and where I stay during the week) is only about 1 1/2 hours north of Memphis.  I particularly like the Atlanta idea since I've never been there.

Sounds like a winner to me.  I am in Atlanta, but would travel to the "Southern" locale most preferred.

May could be good, as long as it's early May.  I know D and I, and I assume others, have plans for Memorial Day weekend.

Yay, a "Southern AMG".......I'll wave a little handkerchief and say "Y'all come back now, ya hear?"....(those who ever went to Six Flags Over GA when they were little know what I am talking about - remember the Okefenokee Swamp Ride?)

I vote for Atlanta.

Alan I was hoping you would be interested in joining us for this little get together. Atlanta seems like the logical choice. It's centrally located to most of us & we wouldn't have to fly to get there. I don't know Atlanta very well though so I would need help with finding a good hotel in a safe area.

Does Atlanta sound good for everyone else? Can anyone help me plan this thing? When do we want to do this? I was thinking mid may. I just looked at the calendar. Mothers day is May 13th. Maybe we should do this the the first weekend  May 4th, 5th & 6th. What does everyone think?

Lets do this! AMG SOUTHERN STYLE!!!!

Atlanta sounds fine -- and, at present, any time in May would work for me.

I would be happy to help, with one small caveat -- work is going to be slamming me (and not in the good way  ::)) from now until I leave for vacation on Feb 9th.  However, I will return from Hawaii refreshed and reinvigorated on the 19th -- at that point I should be able to help out.

It's about 450 miles / 7 hours for us, so we'll probably end up looking for a flight, if we can find something cheap.  Otherwise, we'll spend most of the weekend (I assume it'll be a weekend) driving.  I'm sure that, as many members we have from Atlanta, we can find decent accommodations in a fun area.  Spring is a busy time with local events, festivals, etc in many places, so we'll probably need to have a local let us know what's going on so we'll know what dates to avoid.

David,
AirTran and Delta as well as US Scare, I me US Air.  All fly out of Charlotte and Greensboro except AirTran.

The Sheraton Colony Square on 14th and the Wyndam on 10th in Midtown are good hotels in the area.  Just a suggestion.  I am sure there are many on this forum who can add to this list.  Just starting the process!

Cheers!

As we live on the coast, GSO and CLT are each about 4 hours away.  Raleigh is a possibility, or ILM, but not much selection from there (ILM that is).

Nice to know that you planned on doing something like this for us southerns. Would be nice to go and see most all of you again. Seems to me just coming down to visit with Lisa is about how far I will get to a gathering this year. Maybe next year will be better for me this year is tied up with bills and other things. But from the past few gatherings it was an experience in itself and hope that those attend will have a blast.

David,
AirTran flys our of Triangle and should compete against Delta and US Air.  Check the web.  You can take the train from the airport to the the Sheraton on 14th ($1.75 each way).  Just a brisk walk or hail a cab at MARTA.

Cheers.

Roger,
Thanks for the info.  I didn't know AirTrans was flying out of RDU.  It should be a bit cheaper.  I'll check on it.

I checked flight prices at Delta.com a few days ago. they showed 178.00 round trip from Charlotte NC to Atlanta Ga.

Dan J.

I guess we've decided on what city to hold this thing. Now we need a hotel that isn't too expensive. Maybe some of the Atlanta members can give us some feedback. It doesn't really matter to me if it is in a "Gay" area or not.

Is the weekend after Mothers Day good for everyone?

May is brilliant.

Is everyone set on Atlanta?

Edit:

Atlanta works.  So well.  So very, very well.

Question... since it's the stupid hotels that kill me on fees... I'd probably stay in a hostel... annnnnnd... when you say weekend after Mother's Day... do you mean the weekend of Friday the 18th of May?  Because I'm not off those days.  The weekend before rocks pretty hard (Sat. 5 May), in that I'm off... but the weekend afterwards I have to work.  I really wanna go, so if a date is decided soon, I can tweak my schedule.

Dan J.

If you want to be in Midtown, the Sheraton Colony Square on 14th and Peachtree as well as the Wyndam on 10 and P'tree are gay friendly and near the park, bars and restaurants.  I have seen some B&B's on Piedmont in Midtown, but I do not know if they are good.  There are many other chain hotels downtown away from the Midtown.  About a three mile drive.

Can some other Atlanta people chime in here and add some meat (don't get any ideas) to this?

Cheers and thanks!

At this point anytime in May should work for me.  Hopefully my partner, Sid, will be able to make it too.  With some luck, the dates will allow Aupointillimite to come too -- that way we'll have 3 from Richmond (well, 2 pozzies anyway....)

Looking forward to it.

Thanks, Dan, but CLT is almost half way to Atlanta.  We'll just end up driving, I guess.  When is Mothers' Day, anyway?  If the week after is the 18th, that should work ok for us.  I'd prefer the hotel to be in a 'gay' area, hopefully, we'd be close to clubs.  Would this be a Friday-Sunday thing or Thursday-Sunday?  We've got quite a few friends in Atlanta we'll likely visit, too.  Hopefully, somebody more familiar with Atlanta will help out with hotels... it's been so long since I've spent any time there I haven't a clue as to what's decent.  I guess it's time to get a count and see about a group rate for a hotel.

Whoa... I screwed up!

I am off from 18 May to 23 May.  I can probably get off for that Friday with minimal bitching from my boss... or trade the Friday for the Wednesday.

I work a weird rotational schedule... and sometimes I get confused with the little numbers on the calendar.

The weekend after Mother's Day is wide open for me.  And that's final.

I'm breathing a bit easier now.

Sounds like we need some organization here.  No matter what date you pick, somebody's gonna get left out. I vote May 19
I live in Atlanta too, and could work with Nico and (give us a week) we could list 5 Hotels for everyone to pick from. Or something like that. Nico? can you IM me and.

Decide the date first, accomidations second.  my two cents

May 19th is fine with me. I do need help organizing this gathering.  Finding an affordable hotel in a safe area that is convient to some of the sights would be grat. If anyone in the Atlanta area can suggest something then please go ahead.

Yeah, that's about as far I got. I do have friends in Atlanta but they live in a suburban McMansion with two kids.

Some of us could end up being dorm mates for a few nights. How funny!

I see mention of May 19th... is this just a Sat-Sun thing?  Why not try for Friday-Sun.  it's a bit of travel time and/or expense for less than two days.  This way we'll have at least one whole day.

Settled........like it or not May 19th (weekend thereof)
perhaps I'll be the only one, but...
Still working for hotel information, but you all have internet so individuals can work on that themselves too.
posting by weeks end will be 5 hotels and their rates. Certain that some of us can open our homes to
a few.
I am not trying to hijack this thread. But a date set  should be the first objective and seems alot of folks agree
on May 19.
FYI the area targeted is called Midtown. Downtown is also close, or Buckhead. If your webbing it... anything
inside Interstate 285 is not too far. Interstate 285 is a circle Interstate around metropolitan Atlanta. Anywhere
inside that circle is withing 30 minutes drive of most gay bars.
Stay tuned ~jordon

Thank you Dan, and Dennis for the Hotel info. MY TWO CENTS: go for the Colony Square. Please if you really interested... revisit this thread for more information about Hotel's as more info is forthcoming. Again, if you're googling anything on your own, the  area of Atlanta that is the "gay" area is Midtown. So, if you do your own hotel search look for something in this area. OR, as previously recommended, "anything inside Interstate 285" is within a 20 minute ride to midtown (if traffic cooperates) Ciao~jordon

 :-*

Dan

I can't wait to meet you either, dude!

Of course, after two hours of dealing with me drunk... you guys are totally gonna ditch me somewhere awesome and pretend like you don't know me.

That's gonna be sweet!   ;D

See, my suggestions for an itinerary will be something like... bars, mimosa brunch, bars, mimosa brunch, art museum, mimosa dinner, bars...   ;)

I'm so easily amused, it's kind of ridiculous.

Huzzah!

Both of you... come to Atlanta!

Benj and booze will be there!

That is plenty reason to make a trip, dammit!

Seeing my drunk ass perform is reason enough to come down.

And I guess those other people are cool, too...  ::)

I will be staying in a hostel... it seems to be extremely accessible to MARTA, so I'm not too worried about that.  But I really can't afford anything other than a hostel... plus, I like meeting all sorts of different people, and you don't get that experience in a hotel so much.

Where everyone stays is, therefore, immaterial to me... but I will be giving out my cell phone number like candy so things can be coordinated!

I think it is time we decide in which hotel to stay.

Shall we give till the 15th of march to come to a decision?

We have to take in account that budget place an important role.
So, centrally located and clean.

Does anybody lives close enough to check the cheaper ones out?

PS the one that was going to be renovated by June 2005, is that done yet?

OK... I'm planning on staying in a hostel that's supposed to be close to MARTA... so count me out of anything involving the hotel for the simple reason that a) I can never afford real hotels, and b) I can never afford real hotels.

But I'm still coming... oh God, am I still coming.

It appears to be very near the corner of another street called Ponce De Leon.

Hmm...

I found it on Google Map.

And it is in Midtown according to the same.

Mr. Boo,

The hotel Indigo is a fantastic hotel right across the street from the infamous Fox Theater. You have picked a fantastic location and should be very happy as this is within walking distance from many midtown attractions and cheap cab fares to others you may not want to walk to. And...I looked... the rates are very competitive.
Good Job.

The official weekend is May 19.
The recommended hotels are listed above in this thread. But mostly Colony Square Hotel.
TO DAte :There are NO rooms reseved because ?? who knows how many will come and there's a 10 room miniimum that my credit card may not hold. THIS MAY CHANGE
Mr. Boo has also found a very nice hotel close to the above mentioned named the INDIGO.  Both hotel rates are about $160.
Currently there is a Brunch in planning stages. More to follow.
Night life (which is what its all about...isnt it?) is also in the planning stages, but am certain it wont be dissappointing.  Is it always about sex?  GAW!  (probably). Other than that ... its every man for himself.

My e-mail address is jyngfilm@hotmail.com or just keep watching this thread because thats where all updated info will be posted.

Threre's another hotel, ...but I cant think of the name right now.. please read all the above posts carefully and review the hotel suggestions.  ~jordon

I'm confused about the hotels.  Are most folks staying in the same hotel?  I see several mentioned here.  We'll probably be there, but want to stay where the action... I mean... where the rest of the gang is.  It should be fun.

To those interested in attending a Southern Gathering in Atlanta May 19th 2007 please note.
I drove down to look at two Hotels. All along I leaned towards the Sheraton at Colony Square as dd a few others. This hotel was featured in a thread you can re-read from Dan J  information was compiled by Dennis.
A good hotel with good location to night activities in Atlanta. The group room rate is $99.00 (plus tax) Pretty good deal.
I also drove around and looked at couple resturants, and found a decent gay owned resturant within walking distance of above mentioned hotel..."Eiensteins" (also suggested by someone) Brunch on Sunday. prices range from $8 to $19.  Sunday 10am till 4pm. We can set a time later.

As stated before, this is a social meet and greet. No one has to stay at the suggested hotel, but its a good deal and close to everything in the Atlanta gay district. Please reread the post dated Feb. 6 by DanJ

Twofires suggested we go to Stone Mtn. please reread his post of March 27 it contains a link.

my suggestion is Friday Saturday Sunday weekend of May 19 as we all previously decided. There will be lots to do and alot of fun meeting and partying down.

BUT.......I NEED YOUR HELP IN BEING SURE YOU WILL COME. PLEASE INDICATE FOR SURE IF YOU ARE COMING!!!!!!!. Just post it in your reply.  Please reread the hotel post dated  FEB 6 from DANJ to get hotel phone number. Sheraton Colony Square.

Thanks, ~jordon   _____ you can decide for yourself the agenda... Stone Mtn. Saturday, party Friday Saturday night, Brunch Sunday.. something like that ..

I will NOT be able to attend.

I wish I could come.  I've never been to Atlanta and would love to meet some of you in person.  But unfortunately, I have job duties that weekend that I cannot get out of.  Hopefully there will be another opportunity soon.

I hate to sound vague but I will make my final decision about Atlanta a week or two prior. It will all hinge on moolah and work...if I can make it I'll jump in the car and go. I'm gonna try my best.

I really, really hate to have to do this... but since I've gotten a new job... and I'll only have been there a month (and out of training for a week) by the time this thing goes around, I won't be able to go.

I'm sorry... but I can't ask for days off when I've only been there for a few weeks.

I officially submit

the proprosed Southern Spring a ding

is now, pending any other suggestions

relegated to a Camping Excursion at Rivers Edge, a mere 2 hours east of Atlanta

over Memorial Weekend

Lots of rustic camping slots still available; even some w/ electric!

cheaper than a hotel in Atl and twice the fun!

I'm sorry if my actions prompted the cancellation of the gathering but it seemed moribund even before I contributed to the demise.

I have non-refundable airfare and non-refundable hotel reservations at the Indigo for 5/18 - 5/22 (5/23 checkout).  If anyone wants the hotel room I'll be glad to hop on the plane, secure the hotel room, then hop on the next plane back (I'm the only one who can check in since I got a special deal).  You'd have to pay for room service or a hotel escort or that stuff.

If anyone is interested let me know!
