Title: KLM Dutch Airlines Aids documentary
Post by: mikeyb39 on March 19, 2013, 10:58:14 am
I was reading an article on 'the body' from one of the bloggers concerning the beginning of AIDS and how it hit the airline industry first.  I've heard of patient Zero, who I think worked for Air Canada, but never heard of this about KLM.  I would like to see this documentary, but can't seem to find it, maybe its just coming out or can only be seen in the Netherlands so far.

Anyone have any information about this?

Sounds amazing thanks for the tip.
This is from the link:
In the documentary, Nietsch presents a colourful picture of the atmosphere 30 years ago. It was a time when KLM was booming: its jumbo jets were flying to the furthest corners of the globe, including Sydney, New York, Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco, all popular destinations for the company’s gay stewards. At the time, Amsterdam’s gay scene paled in comparison.
Made me think about the series Pan Am about early 60s stewardess. Made me imagine a miniseries about gay stewards 20 years later.

"And the band played on" was the first mention I ever heard of "patient zero".  It was alleged that Gaetan Dugas, who worked for Air Canada, was the primary responsible for bringing the virus from Africa and supposedly slept with 2500 men.

We now know this isn't the case, as there has been documented cases back to the 60's.  Although, Gaetan probably did play a huge role in the rapid rise of infections in the homosexual community.
