PEP??????
« on: November 29, 2006, 11:12:32 am »
I received unprotected oral from a sex worker.  It lasted 6-8 minutes.  When she finished she went and brushed her teeth, mouthwash, etc.  When she came out of the bathroom and added more light to the room I noticed she had 3 big red sores on her lips, looked like a herpes outbreak.  I am freaking out.

Should I start Pep?

No, you don't need PEP. Receiving a blowjob is not a risk for hiv transmission.

I'm not freaking out about the "blow job".....it's about the herpes looking things.  They were big and red.

PEP is a treatment developed primarily for healthcare workers who have had needlestick accidents related to HIV.

Those mouth sores you are concerned about have nothing to do with HIV transmission. Herpes can be passed along by skin to skin contact. You should discuss the matter with your doctor.

This is an HIV-focused website, and as you've already been told you were not at risk for HIV during this incident.

Andy,

I was not clear in my previous post.  What I meant was would this assumed oral herpes outbreak increase the risk of hiv infection?

PEP would not be prescribed for this sort of exposure.
NB. Any advice about HIV is given in addition to your own medical advice and not intended to replace it. You should never make clinical decisions based on what anyone says on the internet but rather check with your ID doctor first. Discussions from the internet are just that - Discussions. They may give you food for thought, but they should not direct you to do anything but fuel discussion.

Please read (or re-read) the lesson on Transmission. There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section.

In the entire history of the epidemic and countless millions of blow jobs later, there has never been a documented case of transmission to someone getting one. It's safe to say you aren't going to make history by becoming the first.

You've been worrying needlessly. Whatever has provoked your intense concern, I can tell you this is not an HIV situation. Period. End of story.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
