Discrimination is Alive And Well In Alabama
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:43:25 pm »
No big surprise but I've got to look for another place.  My landlord has decided there's something
wrong with a guy like me who doesn't "work".  He's raised my rent 40 dollars more a month to
encourage me to seek other housing.   I couldn't get a lease because housing is so short that some
people take advantage of the situation.  I'm going house hunting again next week...Wish me Luck!

...I put up little white lights on my patio and he asked me to take them down.
and of course there's the way he "looks" at me.  Such disgust!  What a jerk!

hope you'll find someplace nicer/better with a cooler landlord - y'know things happen for a reason. it's so f--d up (and i'm just as guilty as anyone) when we conjure up all sorts of things about a stranger's life just based on X, or Y, or Z ...... well, hoping the best for you

David,

Sorry to hear that. I have a co-worker who's landlord recently raised her monthly rent $175.00/month. I told her to contact the Fair Housing Authority, and see if this is legal.

The landlords reason was " Insurance rates have gone up so much, she had to raise it". Well, that all fine and dandy for the owner, but if the house is destroyed by a hurricane, this person would still be homeless, and the home owner would still get there money, thanks to the renter

Try to get a lease next time around.

Take care, and good luck--------Ray

Personally, I would contact the local housing board in your area/state.  Renters have rights, not many but we do have some.  If you like where you live and want to stay there, check it out, if not, good luck finding a new place!

Hey David, that really sucks.  You should paint his house pink before you leave and see how he likes that... what a jerk.  Hope you find something soon David.

Thanx guys (Alopath, Lisa, Ray, Mark and Matt)...  and Yes, Matt, I should paint it pink.  I don't think he likes
all my plants and my chimes either.  The landlord is definitely an Alabama redneck (present company excluded
Alan)........and even attractive but such an A--hole.  Doesn't like guys who sache' around the grounds, I suspect.
I'm going to find a place...and it might take a little time again but this time I will definitely get a lease.  But
keep in mind, there is a housing shortage due to all the hurricanes in Florida and Mississippi and many landlords
are taking advantage of the situation.   ::)

LOL Matt... Great idea painting it pink. What a son of a bitch. I have always believed in what goes around, comes around. So he will get "HIS". You don't need to be around such negative people. What a sad human being he truly is! I wish you good luck with finding a new place...sooner the better. Don't let this get you down. We all must be strong when things get rough. Be strong and be proud of who you are. You are a kind, sweet man. And yes, good things happen to good people. Hold your head up high and move on. Don't waist valuable time and energy on negative thoughts. Keep  a good frame of mind. Don't lower yourself to the gutter. Best of luck man. Love and hugs to you! All the best, Jeff

Several small sandwich bags with some raw chicken inside.

Take a small pin and poke several holes in each bag.

Put the bags in p laces where no one will think to look. Small crevices, behind the cabinets, washer dryer connections, anywhere it will fit.

Do this the night before you leave.

In a few days/weeks, the odor of rotting corpse will permeate the air, and the local CSI will have a field day.

Um. From what I hear.

I used to work in restaurants that served lots of seafood.  I'll tell you, a few raw shrimp and scallops pushed behind a ceiling light fixture or around an outlet box will stink for DAYS!  What was cool is that it took a couple days for it to get bad and I wasn't around with the stink started.

Oh David,

I just cannot resist doing this..................  "Discrimination is Alive And Well In Alabama"

DUH..............

Also, just want to remind you that any of the dasterdly things that you might do to this "landlord?", will come back to haunt you in the future.  We cannot be the ones to "do" to others without paying the price in the future.  Just the way it is unfortunately.

Leave this landlord and his karma behind and move on!

In Love.
The Bible contains 6 admonishments to homosexuals,
and 362 to heterosexuals.
This doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals,
It's just that they need more supervision.

I say fuck that. You guys know I'm normally a pacifist, but in this particular instance, the asshole deserves a few chicken liver bags.
Besides, you know there is a hotline for Katrina survivors that are being excoriated by gouging. After you get sttled, I would report his ass.
Maybe I'm just feeling a little rude today, but I wouldn't slink away easily for him. YEE-HAAAAAAAA look at'em swing. ;D

Hey Man,

Why dont you move here to L.A.?  No discrimination involved.  Everybodys rent goes up every year.  Or You could just stay where You are.  If You move out, Your Landlord will just rent it to someone else for more money.  Make Him suffer.  Stay.  Put lights in Your window facing out.  That'll show Him.  Learn to enjoy His discomfort.

Why not move right next door to Atlanta.  Big surplus of housing here... rental market is still pretty weak.  My place is about a 350 sq ft. studio w/large, separate dressing room... definitely not the ritz, but right in the middle of gay midtown and only $480/month.  Not many cities you can live in an intown gay area for as cheap as Atlanta (although Atlanta is really sparsely populated).  Only problem here is club noise Thur, Fri, Sat nights.  I just pop in the earplugs and that takes care of it.
Oh... and tons of gay men here if that interests you.. I'm sure you've visited before.

Hey Mitch...I lived in Atlanta years ago.  Midtown.  12th St and I assure you I paid alot more than
that twenty five years ago.  Sounds like you got a great deal though WOW!
I guess I should be more upset than I am but I just can't let this kind of crap get to me...
Maybe that makes me a Guido...  I don't know but I did get some great news today.  My
lawsuit should be settled the first of July so perhaps then I can BUY my next house.  I really do
appreciate the show of support from everybody...  I'm not a vicious person but before I leave
this place....  I will give my A--hole Landlord a piece of my mind and snap my fingers :o

Thank-You... You're the greatest

I have to tell you all what I did several years ago while going to University of Cincinnati.  I lived in a shit box apartment.  The landlords were a couple of sloppy-ass nasty drunks with gin blossoms to prove it.  Anyway they wouldn't let my trans-gendered co-worker visit me and they never kept up the nasty building (mice, concrete ceiling caved in my bathroom - they told me to clean it up!), etc.

So I moved.  My last day there before I locked up, I took off the pressure thing from the radiator and turned it up all the way.  I put a "condemed" sign in the window I got from another building.

I had to go back because I forgot some negatives on top of the medicine cabinet.  I opened the front door and it was like a sauna!  There was so much steam in there you couldn't see your hand in front of your face!  It was like 200 degrees!  I turned around and locked up again.  I hope those fuckers rot in hell.

David,

I feel for you; I try to be very careful.   The neighbors give me "looks" when my guy and I go in and out......

I think my landlady may be a lesbian, or at least gay-friendly, but not sure how she would react about the big A - thing.    She did compliment me on the "decor" I put out in the foyer around my apartment, and she has been inside my place several times and always says "you keep the nicest apartment here".

I commented on this exact issue in the LTS forum, about wanting to be more 'open' with my AIDS status, but fearing for (1) my part time job and (2) my apartment.   This is Alabama, and they are still running about 20 years behind the times......

hugs,
Alan

How did this thread re-emerge?  It's dated last June...June of 2006!  Yikes!   And now you wanna talk about it.
Not to worry I now have a home and two sweet little babies (two Rat Terrier she pups) and we're quite content.
I have no doubt that discrimination is alive and well in Alabama but for me right now...I'm great!

It can happen if someone does a search. For example if he did a search on "Alabama" then the thread would come up, he would read it, find it interesting, and reply. I think that as long as a thread is not a flaming thread it's fine to resurrect it. I've resurrected some old threads to avoid starting a new one if the previous posts were interesting.

I agree with what the others said, get a LEASE, the last place I lived at was just a week by week thing, and I just told them I had a roommate.

Well, they caught on that we were gay, and they raised the rent, nothing I could do since nothing was spelled out in the lease.

This time around I made my landlord put EVERYTHING in writing, so if he asks for more money, I don't owe him shit.
