Combivir and Ziagen in pregnancy
« on: December 11, 2007, 08:12:33 am »
I am 6 weeks pregnant, fell pregnant while on Combivir and Ziagen. My gynaecologist is advising me to stop the medication until I am 12 weeks pregnant and then re introduce the tablets, my physician on the other hand is not sure thats the right route to go so he has advised me to continue using the medication as there are chances that I will develop resistance to the meds, or that my counts will drop - and at the moment this is the only combination that is working for me.

Any advice? Suggestions?

What your HIV doc says.

The best way for your baby to be healthy is for you to be healthy.

Your gyny is perhaps concerned with the HIV meds affecting the baby's development, but with the drugs you are on there is no concern, studies have not shown an increased risk to babies of mothers who use combo in their 1st 3 months of pregnancy compared to mothers who do not.

Perhaps helpful: Prenatal care and HIV treatment

Thank you Matt. I have since decided to go ahead with my physician's advice and will continue with the meds because like you reasoned, the best way for baby to be healthy is for me to be healthy.
