Title: Any one using Darunavir?
Post by: scud44 on May 28, 2007, 05:12:08 am
My specialist is putting me on a regime of Darunavir, Retonavir, Abacavir and FTC (Fuzeon). Has any one else had this combination and if so with what results?
I will be starting in about 3 weeks - thats how long it takes to get some of the meds down here! ???

scud,

You stated that you're on "FTC (Fuzeon)." However, FTC is a nucleoside that is also known as Emtriva. Fuzeon is an entry inhibitor that is injected.

Are you on both those drugs?

I'm on Darunavir (also known as Prezista) and have found it pretty easy to take. I started darunavir to replace tipranavir (Aptivus), which had been giving me lots of problems with nausea and loss of appetite. Those problems went away after switching to darunavir.

I am scheduled to start these in about 2 - 3 weeks - have to consult with GP again and confirm what he's doing

I've been on Prezista (Darunavir) and Fuzeon for exactly a year now.  My results have been PHENOMENAL.  I'm also on Truvada, which I had already been on previous to the Prezista/Fuzeon.  And of course one takes a Norvir booster with the Prezista.

They wanted me on Fuzeon 2 years ago, but my doctor decided to wait and get me on Prezista when it was available in a drug trial as preliminary results were showing a much more beneficial synergy with these two drugs as opposed to just taking them by themselves.  I think you'll be amazed with your results.  My cd4's doubled and are now at 973 or something, and my % went up to 43!  The main reason though that I went on this combo is that my VL has NEVER been undetectable for 13 years, but became undetectable within the first month and has remained so for the entire year.

I'm tempted to switch from the Fuzeon to one of the new things just now coming out because I get sick of doing the injections sometimes, but it's really not THAT bad most days.  So, I think I'll stick with it because I don't want to sacrifice my excellent numbers... sure, they could stay up that high with the new drugs but that is not assured, plus because Fuzeon does not pass through my digestive system my once extremely problematic diarrhea issues have vanished (well... I might have it still once a week -- must be the Norvir, but at least it's not every bowel movement like it was for a decade!!!)

The only question I have, mostly because I only took it for a month due to bad side effects about 8 years ago, is the Abacavir (Ziagen).  Not sure how that interacts with the other stuff.

yes, all of the above bar abacavir

darunavir, very easy to take, minimal if any side effects. If you are using it with fuzeon & other active drugs, I think you can expect to see excellent results.

as allan says, ftc & fuzeon are not same drug, very different,do check this.

good luck with new stuff - kate

*just as an aside... I will be dropping fuzeon for mk-0158 shortly...byebye, needles  :)  :)*

I will just chime in to say, I've had great experience with Darunavir too.  Previously I was on Kaletra/Invirase and Epzicom.  It's a very potent drug with fewer side effects.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the responses - I have a greater degree of confidence now - I will post results when available to see how they go
