Is Gaga a kind of new Bjork?
« on: November 10, 2009, 07:14:34 pm »
Who's stranger?  More fashionable?  More talented?
Gaga seems to be a mixture of the musicality of Bjork, ambition and flair of Madonna, and some Missy Elliott vibe thrown in.  At any rate she's weird and fun, what a great distracting pop star.

Rihanna's getting pretty damn strange too.

Simple answer, NO.

Lady Gaga isn't even in the same ballpark as Bjork.

Bjork's relationship with Matthew Barney has killed her fun factor.  She seems ever more self indulgent.

I thought this performance was stunning

But she's kind of a debbie downer in recent years

I think Lady Gaga's outfits are fantastically hilarious! Funny thing is, I never look forward to her next single but I always look forward to see what she's going to wear!  ;D

Lady Gaga is fun and entertaining.  In the entertainment industry, what else matters?  ;)  Say what you want, but "Lady GaGa has broken chart records in America by becoming the first artist in the 17-year history of the Billboard Pop Songs countdown to score four number ones from the same debut album. My boyfriend and I usually are complete polar opposites on music (I'm metal he's dance), but we both love GAGA.   She is the new updated version of Madonna (although I like to think of her as her on entity, but that's okay).  Honestly, she is on the same realm as Marilyn Manson (visually pushing the boundaries and also he is my favorite artist).  I got us tickets to see her next month and we both can not wait.  Have you seen her new video for "Bad Romance?" It rocks!!

yeah, lady gaga has grown on me as well. at first i couldnt stand her. but after the 1000th time of hearing poker face i finally got hip to it. love game sealed the deal.

she is not a new bjork. bjork channels the true, lady gaga, like madonna, is contrived. both i own albums from all 3. madonna and lady gaga are great in the clubs/dance scenes or anytime u need that energy.

bjork is more. bjork connects.

bjork and lady gaga can both sing.

there are comparisons and vast differences. i am happy to have all 3.

I love Rihanna.  Strange is good.  I think her videos could be a bit better and more convincingly avant-garde, at the edge.   Such as her current look, which is always so chic and avant garde.

exactly! ;D I was listening to her album again the other day after this thread started. I can't remember which song; but she almost sounded just like Dale - only with a little bit of Gwen Stefani warble (Tragic Kingdom era) thrown in instead of the lilt at the end of every line like DB ;)

Ah, Missing Persons, those were the days. Leatherman was quite the New Wave punkster before he butched it up.  ;D

My wife hates me even looking at a cover of a magazine with Rihanna on it.  She thinks I have a thing for island girls because both my ex's are form the islands.  She don't mind me liking Regina King but she hates me even looking at a video with Rihanna on it....

edited to also add: Lady G couldn't carry Bjork's thong!

I guess I need to listen to some more Bjork, because so far she's only aggravated me.  Not like Yoko Ona and Diamanda Galas had a baby, but close. Does she grow on you? Is it acquired appreciation?

Funny, the first time I heard Lady Gaga I thought it was Rhianna.

Totally agree on the Dale Bozio looks, just less tan.

Bjork has never grown on me. I've listened and listened, just don't get it.  As mentioned before, Gaga used to annoy me... "Poker Face" drove me crazy and then I started to like it.  "Love Game" sealed the deal with me as well. Has anyone heard the Love Game remix w/ Manson.  Heaven for me.

good lord, what was manson thinking? ::)
(who IMHO hasn't put out anything worth sh*t since the awesome Mechanical Animals; although Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin-Geddon was entertaining. :) Other than that, Hi End of Low was pretty derivative of that 1998 disc.)

RS reports that Gaga has also lent her vocals to an upcoming remix for a song off of The High End of Low.

Gotta admit that I like Gaga, especially after the release of this new "Bad Romance" single.  That's gotta be one of the best pop singles in the past 12 months.  I love the who Warhol-esque attitude that she gives to her poppy stuff.

Now, Björk?  That's one of my three musical muses/goddesses (along with PJ Harvey and Tori Amos).  Everything from "Venus As A Boy" and "There's More To Life Than This", to "Army of Me" and "All is Full of Love",  to "Hidden Place" and "Pagan Poetry" is pure brilliance.   She beats Gaga from a vocal and writing standpoint (c'mon... "Poker Face" was certainly cute, but it pales in comparison to Ms. Guđmundsdóttir's silliest moment --which in my opinion was "It's Oh So Quiet").

I guess Gaga however is Björk with mainstream/crossover appeal.

And yeah, Rihanna is actually becoming interesting.  Maybe Chris whatever-his-name-is broke or activated something in her brain, cause that new single is nice, dark, and way above the rubbish that passes as R&B these days.

"I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else."

Nah, I don't think Chris Brown is broke. He is just busy doing his community service but whipping on Rihanna has put a major dent in his career. She should've taken a page out of Miss Turner's book and whipped his ass with those high heel shoes she loves wearing. He hasn't shown his face on an awards show since. Maybe him and Kanye is shacking up since they're both on entertainment's shit list.

What most people don't know about the "Bad Romance" video is that it was directed by Eddy Monsoon.

It's going to be set in a bathhouse sweetie but not what bathhouses were, or are, but what they will be-- a futuristic insane asylum bathouse with gay overlords! And I want coffins! Sci-fi coffins with spiky sperm people coming out of them! And modern dance but it needs to look painful! And Gaga darling we need to do something about those squinty peepers of yours. No makeup won't fix that face sweetie, it's going to take bloody CGI. I want you to look like a sad, beautiful doll, but lethal, dangerous and insane! Oh, and what's that camera time freezing Matrix thing they do now? I want that. And flames! And electric sparks flying from your tits! I want all of it, darling, because, let's face it, the song is just dull, souless dance music.

the other and i have a lady gaga moment this weekend. watched a number of her videos. love marilyn too.

yeah, she's def not up their with bjork, pj or tori.

she is up there with madonna, rihanna, beyonce, britney and such. she's pop, she's hot, and she doesn't give a fuck about it all but making her shit bigger and better. i could tip a hat to that.

oh, and live, she kicks madonna, rihanna and britney's asses. beyonce can sing as well as act. lets hope lady gaga is here to stay!

I'm not exactly sure what he was thinking.  I've been a die hard Manson fan for many many years, so I can't diss any of the music since Mechanical Animals, but coming as a casual listener, I understand what you're saying.

I wish I liked Gaga but her music is tired, she dresses like a blind drag queen and her lyrics stink ("P-p-p-poker face, Mum mum mum mah, p-p-poker face").  There's nothing avant-garde or pioneering about her.  Sorry!  Madonna, on the other hand, was all of these once. And there was some intellect behind what she did and why.  :-\

I want all of it, darling, because, let's face it, the song is just dull, souless dance music.

sounds like somebody's been drinking the Jesus Juice!  :o

I wish I liked Gaga but her music is tired, she dresses like a blind drag queen and her lyrics stink ("P-p-p-poker face, Mum mum mum mah, p-p-poker face").

I like her music, but it (and she) doesn't seem all that original.  But she's young (I guess, cos sometimes she looks old for 23), and who knows what she will grow into.

I think her music is awful and her fashion sense contrived.  But I will give her kudos for writing her own music and for appearing at the National Equality March (blissfully not singing).

Gaga is fag friendly, sings well enough, writes music, plays instruments, and is a fame whore.  Madonna couldnt sing for a good 10 years. Love Madonna but we're dealing with a different genre different era.
I like the new Beyonce Gaga video....  Gaga can't dance like Beyonce, yet. Maybe never.

I was listening to Dance in the Dark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xl9lEPBnrO43
and wondering just where I had heard that riff before ???
it was way back in 83, Real Life's "Send me an angel"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6zBjYIyz-0
thank goodness, I wasn't going insane. a couple other people mentioned it in the comments ;D

now I'm going have to go learn how to make one of those mashups to get this out of my head  :D

interesting. thanks for that link. ;)
a few other "borrowed" parts
isn't that Milla Jovovich's strap costume from 5th Element dyed red that Gaga is wearing toward the end?
and everytime Gaga breaks down to "you know that I want you", I keep waiting for Jody Watley to bust in looking for a new love  :D

I cry EVERYTIME I watch 5th element. Its a cheesy wonderful movie, Milla is BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS and I love the the love story between her and Bruce. It's divine - love saves the world. Beautiful.

Yes, it definitely is a different genre. I grew up with Madonna and yes, it does seem Gaga has replaced her on many levels.  Beyonce's new video is awful though. I'm sort of biased though because I can't stand the bitch.  I'm not sure what Gaga was thinking either.  She looks so out of her element.

she can sing well enough. people were waiting for her performance. i don't think she won anything.

on  a side note, whitney didn't fuck  up as much this time. and someone needs to tell her that sparkle fingers don't go well with an ex crack addiction, lol.

I saw her performance on the AMAs and thought it was really good.  Then I saw her on some talk show the other night, it may have been Jay Leno or could have been that red haired guy, but I thought she was pretty cool and she almost seemed kind of shy..

In my opinion she is much more talented than Madonna..
I despise the song Love is in the Air, you should too.

My boyfriend and I will be seeing Lady Gaga tomorrow in Camden! So excited. It came at perfect timing for a six month anniversary gift.  We both are getting dressed up for the occasion.

I downloaded "The Fame Monster" and it is surprisingly good! Some of the songs are derivative, for example "Alejandro" has clearly been ripped off inspired by Ace of Base:

when I first listened through The Fame I wasn't much impressed. To be honest that's why I first checked out this thread. I really didn't understand the hype, and sure didn't like her singing much. Even though the Pet Shop Boys remixed Nothing Else I can say, I really only like Paparazzi (sad to say but it just sticks in my brain), and any mashup (dj earworm-just dance to new order, DJ Fac-Shut Up And Dance) using the Just Dance lyrics (only cause those are great lyrics - been there done that LOL)

However Mr. Sinner ;) got me interested in Bad Romance ;D and so I listened through The Fame Monster which turned out to be much better I thought. Of course she totally ripped Ace of Base, Real Life, and almost some Jodi Watley (but the lyrics are different) for a few tunes;  but the others really aren't half bad at all. (Telephone is my fav dancey tune; and Teeth is just, well, cool)

so now on my sansa player is Lady Gaga along with the latest Patick Wolf, Adam Lambert, and Shakira
quite the odd assortment while I rake leaves and haul mulch around the property. LOL

I can't imagine that he is. ;) I had never heard of him until I caught the movie "Were the world mine" - not really a very good take on A Midsummer Night's Dream (in my college production, having been Snug - the guy who plays the lion - I have an affinity for all variations of the Bard's play) but the movie was full of some good music and a whole troupe of little gay boys singing, dancing, and kissing. LOL

Patrick's song "the Magic Potion" is featured in the flix. Of course with the help of wikipedia, I learned about Mr. Wolf and proceeded to download more of his music. A very interesting chap and I'm sure not everyone's cup of tea, but I've become quite enamored of his "romantic folk techno pop" or whatever style it is that he performs. Have you caught the next single Damaris?

I cant get She Wolf out of my mind.
she's another one I would imagine not many americans listen to. I mean she sings in all those languages ??? I've got no idea what her songs are about; but she's hot, the videos are the hot, the music is hot, so it's alright by me. ;) Have you seen her new vid? Quite the contortionist and barely dressed. Quelle surprise! :o (I did take a couple yrs of hi school French; but that's not a language Shakira sings in. And I don't know that I would understand it if she did, having been taught by an older lady in a NC classroom. If "y'all" ain't a French word, then I'm pretty certain I don't speak French LOL)
