What is the CD4%?
« on: July 14, 2008, 04:12:08 pm »
I read everyone talking about CD4% - what is it and what is considered good or bad?  I had my first doctor visit and blood work last Tuesday - only thing back so far is the CD4 count which was 694.  He did not mention my CD4% but said my ratio to CD8 cells was 1.1 which he said was very good.  Do I need to wait for the VL test results before I know my CD4%?

Thanks for the info.

The cd4% is the other way of measuring cd4. It's the percentage of lymphocytes (cd4 + cd8 + B cells) that are cd4. It's used because it's supposed to be more stable than the count.

If you had the cd4 count results back, you already have the percentage, though maybe your doctor didn't tell you. Anyway, if your cd4 to cd8 is 1.1 (which is really good, positive people usually have values lower than one), your percentage must be very high. I would guess around 40% or more (remember lymphocytes = cd4 + cd8 + b cells, and you already know that your cd4 count / 1.1 = cd8).

To sum up, you're in pretty good shape :-)

By the way, welcome to the forums. There are great people around here, I'm sure you'll find them helpful.

Hugs!
