ASO in USA

Very strange I pulled up information on finding a ASO ~ (aids service organization) in or around the zip that I live in and within a 50 mile radius NOTHING!

100 miles not even close or even in the same state that I reside in.

All I can say is if you do not live in a major city in the USA. You are screwed!

I guess most of all that come on here are from major cities.

It is just really sad that there are people out there that get the virus and are stuck with not having any way to information.

So I guess if you are one of those people like me that are stuck in a area that has no ASO you will just have to rely on your local social service department.

Or move to a larger area in the USA!

Unfortunately, you're all too correct about this, Jerry. I don't know if you saw the recent NIGHTLINE report on "Remote Area Medicine," (RAM.org) which is a volunteer group of medical providers. Originally it was begun to bring medical care to areas outside the US. Subsequently they have found there is a great need for it in this country and have been doing wonderful work. Check out their website. Perhaps they will be doing a weekend accessible to your area and might be helpful to you and others you know.

What you are experiencing is why ACT UP has joined in with the Private Health Insurance Must Go Coalition (www.phimg.org) to work for Single Payer healthcare which would guarantee full medical care for everyone living in the US.

Hey Jerry,

I understand completely. New Mexico is something of a model because the state has tried to spread out HIV care throughout the state.

It has been somewhat successful, but still there are gaps and large areas that are underserved or have little contact from their ASO.

I think mine is the only agency that actually has two offices, the main one in Albuquerque and my office in Farmington, near the Four Corners.

I still travel a lot and provide services to people in a 10,000 mile area. Kinda tough for one person to do, but I do my best.
