Moving to Birmingham, Alabama, looking for social network...
« on: October 26, 2009, 02:55:26 pm »
Dear Friends,

I'm hoping to move to Birmingham in the next few months from uber-smalltown, USA.

Can you recommend a local online forum or bulletin board type network to chat or post with local gay or gay-friendly folks in Birmingham?

I need a short-term roommate and I have a dog.  I will need a place for approximately 3 to 6 months while I find work and look for housing.  I have some acquaintances in the area but they aren't upwardly mobile.  I'm not sure it would be a good idea to share housing with them, even for a brief period.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Feel free to reply to this forum or directly to my email, below.

Sam

Sam, Birmingham also has the 1917 clinic at UAB... 205-934-1917... if you need any hiv care, meds, etc... and or clinical trials... many people who are insured, underinsured and or no insurance recieve treatment and access to meds there. Give them a call if you need any assistance also they have social workers free of charge...they can help you with housing etc...  The job market sucks big time...Checkout the market before the big move to see if you can find employment... wish you the best... sincerely, John

Thanks.  I know about the clinic.  I guess I just wanted to talk with locals and connect with other people in similar situations (not looking for dates but for contacts and friends).

Thanks,

Sam

I don't believe I need subsidized housing, either.

You know how big cities have professional gay networks and/or a clearinghouse or website to help gay people find services and social groups (like bowling, softball, gay NA/AA groups, Magic, etc.)?  It's sort of like a newcomers group for straight people.  THAT's what I'm looking for.  I don't know many people in the area.

I tried the GSA at UAB but that was a bust.

Thanks,

Sam
