Condom breakage during sex
« on: November 14, 2006, 04:03:17 am »
Dear friends here,

I am writing to ask your opinon on the risk factor of this situation.

I had protected sex with a sex worker (massage parlour) of unknown status. However, during sex, the condom broke, causing the head of my penis to be exposed. I did not ejaculate & I estimate the exposure time to be around 30seconds and insertion depth about half inserted. After the exposure, i washed with water and soap. I now realize that the condom broke because the sex worker was very dry and did not use any lubrication. This is my 1st time visiting a sex worker.

I know i need to get a test done. I have since gotten an anti-std jab but what bothers me is the risk of HIV infection. Am i at high risk?

Sincerely
Turin

Turin,

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man. You were protected up until the break occurred. I have yet to see an insertive partner end up testing positive after a condom break.

You would be wise to test, but the odds are significantly in your favour of testing negative. Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

taking into consideration that your exposure time was limited to about 30 secs, it is not the highest risk scenario, but yes it was unprotected sex in the end and yes you do need to get tested following the 13 weeks window period. Just wait for 13 weeks after your last risky exposure and get tested and that will be a conclusive result. In your case although there is a risk, I think it is unlilkely that you will test positive so stay calm. Always use protection and remember, no sex is 100% SAFE. Condoms break. Some STDs like HPV can be transmitted even when condoms are used. So there is no such thing as safe sex, there is only "safer sex" unless you are in a securely monogamous relationship with a partner who doesnt have any STDs. good luck.

Hi Ann & pleasewakemeup,

Thank you for your opinions. I hope that everything will be fine with me in 13 weeks time.

Dear friends,

I had been pondering over the condoms section in this forum and also the exchanges in the thread. Condom breakage usually occurs catastrophically. Is this always true? This is due to my concern in my earlier post about condom breakage, it might be a real breakage, or it might have been my mind causing me to assume otherwise. Please help.

If you would have had a condom break, you would not be guessing about it. It's not a subtle event.

Turin, as you have already been told the risk during this single incident was extremely low for HIV transmission. Ann's given you the real deal in more detail.

I suspect that some of your anxiety is grounded in the inciident having been with a sex worker as well as the first time you've had that kind of expereince. That doesn't change the reality that this was a very brief possible exposure and a low-risk one.

As a precaution getting tested at 13 weeks is a good idea. No matter what scary thought your mind may continue to come up with, I still expect you to test negative. During the waiting period until you test I suggest you work at staying productively busy. It will really help the time to pass more quickly than you may imagine is possible at this moment.

I expect you to come out of this ok.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
