HAART makes you smell?
« on: February 26, 2007, 08:16:17 am »
Someone (negative) told me the other day that HAART, in particular protease inhibitors, changes the way your body smells, i.e. as you sweat. I gathered, in a fairly subtle but not particularly pleasant way.

I tried googling the subject but could not find any info about this. Is it true? Or perhaps it's just one of those urban myths?

Hyperglycemia may cause ketoacidosis, a serious diabetes-related condition that is sometimes characterized by a fruity mouth odour (strictly speaking acetone-like), and some people on PIs get insulin resistance, very occasionally in a serious manner with fairly rapid onset (<90 days from starting therapy)...  this odour thing (a) weirdy-scented breath is not the defining presentation of ketoacidosis (b) keto is rare for people on PIs with insulin resistance (c) as a rule, another urban (HIV-negative) myth about HIV treatment.

Thanks Matt - I was a bit baffled when he told me this 'fact' but wasn't in a position to argue - I am now...  :)

Hey Key,
I thought you might be talking about Crix farts, etc. Now THOSE can clear a room.

But, as Matt said, sounds like another urban legend. Tell the person to hit the showers.

That's what I was thinking.  I swear something in Atripla does the same thing.  It's bad when farts make the one farting gag!

Someone said that I was the cause of HIV, being a scientist. If that 'fact' is true, I've got a lot to answer for. Especially as I wasn't born when it transferred to humans.

NB. Any advice about HIV is given in addition to your own medical advice and not intended to replace it. You should never make clinical decisions based on what anyone says on the internet but rather check with your ID doctor first. Discussions from the internet are just that - Discussions. They may give you food for thought, but they should not direct you to do anything but fuel discussion.

It is for these very reasons I refuse to take a PI!  I may die but my breath will be minty fresh and my body will smell lightly of tuberose.

How could anyone argue against such a valid personal choice?

Boo, for us  (hubby and I), it's not really that bad.  In fact, I would say that it's one of the more minor side effects, doesn't happen all the time, and doesn't cause any breath issues. In fact, I think that it it causes the gas issue more for me than for my hubby, which is a good thing (for me, anyway).  The gas, and a few funky dreams, are the ONLY way I can tell I've taken Atripla.

Dancer, I've been known to do that too, even pre-Atripla.

I think it's true. I had a fellow worker who was more than pleased to point out the fact that I "smelled". Turned out that person was just an a**hole. However, I keep a fan at work so I can disperse any foul smelling eruptions from my big butt rather than letting some unsuspecting innocent get a renegade whiff of my butt gas. Besides I can only take so much laughter, cause it starts to hurt, when a co worker gags and runs for his life after inadvertently walking into one of my gas clouds.  ;D
Damn the Torpedoes! Full speed ahead! Adm. D. Farragut.

Started Atripla 8/18/06 and if I eat the right food when I take my meds, I get to go on a-trip-la.

OK.  I must share quite a story with you on this one.  I used to work part time at a local gay gym.  There was one guy who would come in to work out who REEKED to high heaven.  He would stink up the entire gym- no exaggeration.  It was of the usual no deodorent BO variety....times 1,000.  It could seriously make you gag.  We were getting several complaints from other members- demanding that something be said to this guy.  When something was eventually said to him, it turned into quite a big thing because the guy's lover made a tearful speech in the manager's office about how every attempt was made to control the odor, but it was a side effect of his meds.  He also said that the guy was crushed after being approached about the odor thing, and that we should all be ashamed because he was fighting for his life and here we were- at this oasis of healthy activity where some improvement might be made- making him feel like he should be cast out.  That was the first time I had heard about something like this HAART odor thing.  I'm glad you brought it up because, although I had not thought of that incident in quite sometime, I had always wanted to hear from other knowledgeable people about that situation.

Question would be is it HAART or some odd excessive intake of nutritional supplements?  I know when I used to take tumeric supplementation in the early 90's something odd happened regarding odor... can't recall if it came out in my piss or sweat though.

tumeric supplementation

Interesting you mention this. I eat a lot of self-grown sprouts and among these there are sometimes fenugreek seed sprouts. They make my farts, sweat and everything smell really funny. Intense, but not unpleasant, and not as tear-inducing as say, garlic. More like a vegetable hot pot.

As for HAART, especially PI induced smells: Could it be related to elevated triglyceride levels? Like, if they deposit on the skin, could they go rancid?

I used to have a Leather Daddy landlord who was on HAART who would often smell to high heaven, but then his lover told me he liked "Man Sweat" on the weekends and purposely smelled that way.  I think he may have been adding some Tina in with the Man Sweat too but I can't be sure.  I just know some weekends he reeked, and it wasn't due to Amber's designer impostor perfume.

I'm taking truvada, lexiva, and norvir...and other then the farts I have noticed that when I'm either working out hard or just generally sweating a lot I smell like body odor.  Maybe its me but I think it's stronger now then it was before I started HAART.

I have trained my body to start the farting when my teaching day is over. Well not really, but oddly enough, the farting urge starts when I get into my car, and yes I must roll down the windows, because of the bad gas. I have noticed an increase in the methane output since starting meds. I have yet to clear a room though.

Since methane is a greenhouse gas, is HAART partially responsible for global warming?

If it is a part of the global warming issue, I think I personally am responsible for the loss of at least one glacier and the snowcap on Kilimanjaro, which disappeared a few years ago.

OMG! I'm violating the Kyoto Accord!

I do wonder, though, whether some people simply have more body odor than others. I have met people, pre-AIDS, who could make you gag and your eyes water even though they showered daily and used every deoderant available.

HMMMMM, it does make one wonder.

i know its probably not the same, but for many years pre-hiv, i found no matter how much deodorant i used i would still have that musky man smell, and was worse when working out. in recent years however, since i've been shaving/waxing all over ( ;) ) my body hair i find theres no smell/not much smell at all and some days i feel i dont even need deodorant.

I read something a post or two above about deposits on the skin or something, maybe regular or daily exfoliating would help with that??

I'm SUPRISED really.....that noone has mentioned the asparagus factor.  I dont know if this applies to everyone, but there is definately an odor of asparagus  when I urinate an hour or so after eating asparagus.  Same thing with coffee.  Now if this happens with coffee and asparagus...I can only begin to imagine what might happen to HAART meds.
