What Trips Your Trigger?
« on: January 28, 2007, 05:09:51 pm »
I know, i know... too much time on my hands.

As I sit here passively taking care of a friends diabetic cat while she is away and chilling out on my third day without a smoke (and doing fine oddly enough), I started cataloguing my tunes in Media Player (How anal is dat?).  :D

Anyway, interspersed with all this madness I'm scoping stuff out on the forums and it got me to thinking about what makes me happy when I'm down.

For me, it's listening to music. Specifically Trance or House. I can be doing anything else at all during the listening but it always seems to command me to put a smile on my face.  :D

What is it for you? Some form of exercise maybe? Perhaps building model airplanes?

Also, please take a moment to answer the poll and above all, have some fun!

I guess I had to say electronica... even though that term is a bit broad...

And what makes me happy when I'm down?

Hmm... there's this really cool place in Richmond called Belle Isle... and in the warmer months, I'll go onto what we call the southside rocks on the island, bring beer and books and music... and get wasted all by myself.

I haven't heard too much music since my diagnosis and I don't want to as much. Some of the lyrics of some songs make me cry or make me melancholical. I no longer listen to music and if I do it is classical music or music without lyrics. I know I Know it sounds dumb but I just can't help myself.

I know a better place than Belle Isle... very private!

I have TONS of house music from the late 80's roots through all the 90's.  I kinda sorta used to DJ, so it's all in vinyl too.

I used to think I had eclectic taste in music.. but I find that I simply cannot relate to electronica/house/trance etc   I know it's gay sacrilege... but that music does nothing for me.

Give me Ryan Adams or Richard Ashcroft.

I agree with you Puck

Techo/Dance/Trance music reminds me of two gym bunnies dancing with their t-shirts off at a circuit party or some flamboyant skinny boy who thinks he is a girl. lolz. Not generalizing just recounting what I use to see at the few times I was at these events.

Uh... there are different types of house.  I generally like the more Body&Soul type stuff and not the trance-ish schlock.  I barely call that house.

Those parties are not fully of gym queens... if anything it's generally a black and latin crowd.  You folks are just going to the bad clubs, that's all.

See, when I say "electronica," I mean what the truly pretentious call "post-rock" or "indie pop."  It's mostly electronic music... but not dancey.

Stereolab, Mouse on Mars, Turn On, Air, Boards of Canada... that stuff.

Well, I listen to tons of other stuff too.  I've been collecting lots of music for over 25 years and have about 10,000 vinyl records, plus tons of CD's.  I was a huge 80's music head, and we all know how everyone copies shit like Joy Division these days.  Some of us were actually into it before everyone else!  Major Cocteau Twins fan.

Oh, and I also managed someone for a time who won a Grammy but I won't drop names.

Oh yeah... Interpol, The Strokes, and every emo jackass ever have totally and completely ripped off Joy Division in so many ways.

It makes me sad.  But New Order makes me happy... so it's all good.

My roommate and I have a picture of Ian Curtis in our living room.  Next to it we wrote "We heart Ian."  It's kinda creepy in a cool way.

Have you seen 24 Hour Party People?

I've not see it -- that's the Manchester doc, right?

My other big fave is The Associates and Billy Mackenzie's later solo work, though most people HATE it.  It's like Bowie on steroids, plus Billy was gay and committed suicide a decade ago so the tragic martyr is intact.  He was so scrumptiously stylish as well.

extra credit:  The Smith's  "William, It Was Really Nothing" was written about MacKenzie

Oh. My. God.

Speaking of music legends... this is what happened when Serge met Whitney Houston... it's sort of amazing.

I love Serge so very much... especially when he's wasted.

It's not a documentary... it's one of plot films... about Factory Records and Manchester.

There's a scene where Ian Curtis hangs himself (well... right after the suicide) in the movie.

Since losing some of my hearing, I mainly just play music in my car. And since someone stole my music out my car, I have to start all over again. At times, I will listen to music on my dvd player. When feeling stressed or in my zone, I like to relax by playing video games.
