IE7 crashes interminably?
« on: December 30, 2006, 10:39:16 pm »
Today Internet Explorer 7.whatever began to crash when I was doing just about anything -- trying to post to a thread, after opening another tab, after using preview post, whatever.  I uninstalled 2 programs installed earlier today and rebooted the PC a couple of times but IE just keeps crashing.  I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.1 without problems thus far but I'm getting ready for bed so it doesn't matter if the mofo works now.

I'm throwing this out in the absurd hope other people have experienced exactly the same problem and know what the fix is.  Otherwise I guess I'll try a system restore or re-install of IE.

Tomorrow.

Thanks for listening and caring and being there in my darkest hour, when I'm weary and feeling small, when friends just can't be found, like a bridge over troubled water, I'm gonna go lie down.

Sorry Boo, I can't be of help to you, doobee doobee doo.

I'm still running IE 6.somethingorother. I refuse to download IE 7 until I'm sure they've got all the bugs worked out. As far as I know, it's still a beta and I stay away from beta anything. Too much stress for this wee girl.

Hello Boo,

The only thing I can suggest, is to make sure you have all your critical updates installed. Hopefully you don't have some other little bug running around.

I installed IE7, when it first came out. had some minor problems, and uninstalled it. I later reinstalled it, and it has been working great ever since.

If you want to uninstall IE7, go to your ADD/REMOVE program, make sure the "show update box" is checked. You will then see IE7 listed. Highlight it, and choose remove on the right hand side. Make sure to restart your computer. This should put it back to IE6.

PS on my computer it is listed as "windows internet explorer 7'...3.24 megab

Take care----Ray

It may not be the answer you are looking for, but download Firefox 2.0.   It has pretty much all the same features as IE, but with less popups and more security.

I've been using it for a couple of years now and I really like it.

I have to agree, ditch I.E. 7. I tried to use it and hated it. I got popups all over the place even when the damn blocker was on. I have since been using Firefox with no problems.

I'm using Firefox now but I have a fingerprint sensor that works only with IE and I've become addicted to it.  I'm a really bad typist and I also get a cheap thrill putting my finger down to log into a web site.  The fingerprint reader was the only reason I began using IE, which I'd ignored at least 20 years before buying the sensor.

I guess I can use roboform but still have to type the master password.  I don't know why I lock my computer down so much since I live alone and the odds of someone else using this computer are about 1,000,000,000,000 to 1.

I'm going to uninstall IE and install it again.  If that doesn't work I'll use Firefox.  But I do love my APC Biopod (TM)

Hey Boo -

This link goes to an extension you can add to Firefox to use your reader: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3871/

There may be more then one extension available, I didn't spend a lot of time looking.

Hope that it works for you.

I use a site called zipzoomfly.com for computer stuff and found you can get the fingerprint reader and a intellimouse for $35.00 and free shipping!  Such a deal!  May just get one for myself.

Sorry Boo we are getting this off topic - hope your re-install of IE worked or maybe the FF extension will do the trick.

Queen - as long as your laptop runs a Microsoft operating system running Windows XP or higher - won't work on a Mac.

Here are the specs required:

* Computer/Operating System: Windows XP Home, Professional, Tablet PC, or Media Center Edition with a Pentium 233 MHz or higher processor and        128 MB of RAM
* Hard Disk Space: 80 MB of available hard disk space
* Connectivity: An available universal serial bus (USB) port
* Other:
          o CD-ROM drive
          o Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 or later and MSN® Explorer 8.0 and 9.0

These days PC tends to stand for a Windows machine. While not technically correct if someone says "its a PC" it means it doesn't run Linux or isn't an Apple.

IE 7 doesn't even show up in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs list!!!  I've checked 100 times.  I installed it again but the f*cker still crashes.  I'm going to start a class action against Microsoft for this egregiously monopolistic tactic so if anyone wants in PM me.

I guess I'll have to buy an MS fingerprint sensor since the APC model I have doesn't work with Firefox... dammit!!  I do so love seeing my fingerprint on the bottom of the screen.

Akasha, as Kevin demonstrated (thanks, Kevin!), the cost for one of these devices isn't really too much.  If I eat beans instead of meat for 2 weeks I can get another.  I'm sure the zipzoomfly price is one of the best but I always froogle.com items before purchasing to be sure.  You can pick one up at your local CompUSA or such but they're never on sale.

I'm waiting for an eyeball sensor to come out.  I really want one of those, too.

Hey Boo - sorry to hear the re-install didn't work.  I know this maybe dumb - but I missed seeing IE7 in my Add/Remove list the first time because I stopped when I got to Microsoft in the list and it is actually under Windows IE7.

Also - usually when there are problems with software one of the ways to try and figure out what might be causing the crash is to load Windows in Safe Mode and see if IE loads then.  If it does, that's an indication there is something loading thats causing the crash and not a problem with IE.  If you have the time and patience you can slowly go through disableing any drivers and software that load with windows and then retrying IE7 until you find the offending software.  I hate doing this myself and it's a pain in the butt and not always effective.

Another thing is that even though you removed the software you loaded earlier in the day, that doesn't mean all of it is gone.  A lot of times files are left in the registry and other places that might still be causing problems.  I use a free software called CCleaner that seems to get rid of more leftovers.
Have you ever tried it?  If not it's available here: http://www.ccleaner.com/

And one last thing, I saw this post on Amazon.com in one of their forums that may offer another solution to using Firefox with APC that was dated May 1, 2006 so is fairly current.

" While it's true that the software packaged with the device is only compatible with Internet Explorer, there is a way to make it work with Firefox (sort of). Simply download the Firefox extension called IE Tab. This extension allows Firefox to open websites of your choosing with Internet Explorer. The beauty is that it opens these sites within a Firefox tab so it's barely noticeable that IE is being used. Unless you want to fork over the extra money for Omnipass 4.0, I think this is the best solution for Firefox users."

Hope something works for you - other then eating beans!  :)

Boo ,

Are you sure that you have the "show updates" box on the top of the add/remove program page CHECKED ? If it is not checked, IE 7 will not be shown in the list of programs to be removed.

Also if you decide to reinstall, and give it another shot, MAKE SURE your antivirus and firewall  are diabled before you procede.

Well, shit!!

I've tried everything now but IE keeps crashing.  Cclean went through its permutations. after I re-installed IE it did appear in the Add/Remove list (I swear it wasn't there before, under MS or Windows or anything) so I uninstalled it, ran Cclean, rebooted, installed IE7 again, ran Cclean again, rebooted, and the f*cker crashes after a few minutes.  I've sent about 10,000 crash reports to MicroSquish so maybe Bill Gates will call me with the solution.

I can't use the IE tab with Firefox because it actually opens IE within Firefox and IE just crashes again.   I think older versions of Firefox could mimic IE but the newer version doesn't.   I think NetCrap works with the Biopod but I'd rather use Firefox or IE.  Damn, damn, damn.  Maybe I'll see if I can return to IE6.

Did I mention how much I hate Microsoft?

I know this won't be any consolation Boo, but I've known six different people upgrade to IE7 here in the UK and every one of them has had so many problems that they've returned to IE6. It also seems to have buggered up some of their other programmes in some way or another too and has taken a lot of work to get their machines right again.

Go back to IE6 and let the Gates crew sort out their own bugs, I reckon 2008 should be time enough to upgrade.

Boo,

sorry about your problems.  IE7 is not ready for prime time now.  If it is crashing, it has already probably caused enough system damage that will linger.  I know this can be a pain...but if you can save your files, it would be best if you do a clean reinstall your OS (winXP).  This will involve formatting the hard drive, better done with a slipstreamed CD (one that wil boot directly from a CDRom)

If this would be too much ... you can try uninstalling IE7. There are a lot of procedures: see these google returns on some of these:--

http://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+remove+IE+7&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Take a particular note of the following CNet_Review: http://reviews.cnet.com/Internet_Explorer_7/4505-3514_7-32111537.html

Boo: There is something with the MMXL plug-in that is causing the situation. I tried everything and I rolledback to IE6 and it works fine.
