Quebec Private Insurance
« on: April 25, 2016, 08:21:12 am »
Hi everyone

I am writing this on behalf of my partner.

We are Montreal, Quebec citizens and he has private insurance through his employer. In order to obtain his meds, he would need to pay upwards of 650$. However, if he were to use public health care (RAMQ) it would only cost 85$. Is this normal?? Can he cancel his private insurance even though he is employed? He hasn`t taken his meds for a couple of months since he can not afford them now and this has me super worried.

Hi and bonjour!
This sounds so warped! If i were you guys, i would just go to the nearest clinic with his RAMQ card and not say anything. Just get the treatment. I doubt anyone will even notice/know that he has private insurance.
he really should get treatment ASAP and if living in Quebec, this should not be a problem no matter what.

Hi,
I live in Quebec too. Because I have private insurance through work, only 80% of my meds are covered. I was paying 380 CAD monthly out of pocket to cover 20% of my meds. However, since January I have been under my partner's insurance as well, so the 20% is covered by his insurance.

Take it a day at a time....and be positive about it too!

This is such a stupid law! It actually encourages one NOT to get the private insurance benefit from one`s employer....
I am a Quebecer but have not lived there for my entire adult life, so i was not aware of the details of our  supposedly "free" medicare. I was always under the impression that we have great coverage in Quebec, and always saw moving back there as a possible retirement plan...
good to know these things.
Sorry you have to go through this guys. I guess the best way around it is to tell your employer you do not want his benefit. Perhaps, get part of the benefit in cash?
