PA Tax Commercial Very Creepy
« on: May 07, 2010, 12:24:10 am »
This is very creepy.  It is a commercial from Pennsylvannia about collecting state taxes.  They use graphics like google earth to zoom down on someone's house saying they know where you live.  It will be interesting to see how effective it is.  While I think it is so wrong and creepy, it will probably be very effective.  It kinda scared me and I don't even live there.

Maybe someone should make the same type of commercial, showing the homes of the IRS or the PA tax workers .   ::)  That works both ways.

Some British Local Authorities have been using Google Earth for some time now, to spot people who have made improvements to their properties which will increase it's value and thus enable them to levy a higher Council Tax on it.

It really is creepy the amount of surveillance which we have to accept these days.

Well pull out the Crayolas (!) and colour me confuzzled.

Is this advertisement by the PA taxation authority or a crafty political criticism of tax collection?

How do I know you spotted it? I mean you might just be saying that to get me to do something dirty.

Google's Street View is cool, but kinda creepy.  A couple years ago, I saw the truck with a 360 degree camera attached to the top.  On the program, you can drive down my street and stop and see my house up close.  You can see our cars parked in the driveway.  As you're "driving" down the street with the program, you can see people in the cars it passes.

I wonder how many people have been busted for cheating this way--your spouse or partner seeing someone's car parked in the driveway?  I never thought about tax officials using it to see what improvements you've made to your house.

Several countries are balking at Street View.
Greece just used Google maps to identify tax cheats in rich neighborhoods.

So it has good and bad uses.

I use it sometimes in the classroom - its very handy when students from around the world can call up pictures and use them to discuss all sorts of things.

I find this fascinating.

However, if you truly want to experience creepy, go to Zillow.com.

It will blow your mind!

An Arab boy was telling me about how the USA was the dream land and the best country in the world. It was the day civil charges were filed against Goldman Sachs and I was feeling particularly bitter about the rich poor divide.
I called up Google Earth and we zoomed down to the Hamptoms. I told him how it was when I was a boy 40 years ago and showed him the godzillion mansions that had been built since then. While I was explaining about wall street and the leftist theory about how it shifted zillions from the middle class to the rich with the 90's and naughties (2000-2010) excesses of bank profits.

It IS astounding the physical evidence of the wealth transfer.

My mom used to annoy the hell out of me calling and asking me to look out my window to see if somebody she was not fond of was at home .

I finally cured her of it by saying OK Gladys and making her yell Abner into the phone before I would go peek . It really pissed her off and she finally quit using me to spy on the neighbors .
