I tested positive in 1984. Because of a men's study I was in where they froze blood, I know I have been positive since at least 1977. I have been on meds since 1986 (AZT). My CD4s have been in the range of 160 to 220 (20% to 22% almost from the beginning (the highest they have been is 340 and that was when I was first diagnosed My viral load has been undetectable for many years. No matter what drugs I am on, there has been no bump in my CD4s yet I am undetectable. I guess something can be said for stability but I sure would like to see a rise in my CD4s. Does anyone have a similar history? Does anyone know of any studies or even anecdotal information about prognosis or anything else, where the CD4s stay low but VL is undetectable? Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of theories as to why some people with undetectable VL's have greater cd4 responses than others. Here is a recent finding:

Also, it is helpful to remember that the cd4 range for a neg person can be from 470-1400 ( numbers vary slightly-depending on the lab). So, if you were a person who had a cd4 count of say, 500 when you were negative, then a stable 250-300 count at 22 percent isn't bad at all. If your neg cd4's were at 1000, then the 250 count is less positive. But man, you have been stable for over 25(?) years, with an undetectable VL! My advice? Stay inquisitive, but worry less!
