Title: Boyfriend Poz / Me still showing at negative
Post by: LadyMisty1207 on July 08, 2014, 06:00:48 pm
Backstory: Back in May that my bf of 3 1/2 yrs tested poz at that time I tested negative 2x, once with a swab test at the E.R. back in Feb and with a rapid test and extended lab results in May..I needed to see the doctor today because I was a little dehydrated and my primary is away on vacation so I went to the E.R. and they gave me a swab test again which came out negative.

Question: Second swab test shows negative, should I still do the rapid and extended test again?? Back in May, the doctor said to come back 2 to 3 months which mean this month or next.

***Boyfriend was infected almost 4 years ago but showed no signs until April of this year that's why I am asking***

You can use a standard antibody test at 3 months for your conclusive result . A six weeks negative test rarely goes on the be positive so you should expect a negative result when you retest at 3 months OR 12 weeks .

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. Most who are infected will test positive by 6 weeks. For various reasons a small number will take longer and that is why we suggest that you test at 3 months for a conclusive negative result.

Thanks Jeff, it is still crazy to me that he never showed any of the typical signs after a person becomes infected.

its not crazy, many people don't have symptoms for many years. 6-8 years is what a chart I saw today at the dr office said. I had no symptoms til about 10 years (estimate)
