Herpes Drug Has Direct Anti-HIV Effect

I've heard that for those who are poz and not yet on ARV meds and have Herpes as well as HIV, it's probably a good idea to talk to your doctor about taking suppressive therapy dosing of either Acyclovir (generic) or Valacyclovir (Valtrex, not generic) since this may help in keeping not only Herpes viral load down but also HIV viral load down.

Does anybody know if this could lead to possible resistance to some HIV drugs?

Be careful here.

I spoke to my specialist about this and he fundamentally is against this. As HIV meds may ultimately have resistance issues, so can Herpes potentially become resistant to Valtrex.

Using Valtrex short term to knock down an attack is one thing. He is circumspect with the liberal use of Valtrex long term. And wonders if in fact we are creating resistant Herpes, by folks going long term.

Of course if one does not have Herpes, one has to inquire as to its effectiveness in the realm of HIV. But my understanding is the idea is to suppress one virus so that the body can fight the other more effectively. I could easily be wrong about this.

Before I started Atripla I was (still am) taking Acyclovir every day twice away to supress the Herpes. I was having very frequent outbreaks though. I have been taking it for a few years. I have heard about it fighting the herpes and HIV but I have not asked my doctor about it. I will ask him next time what his views are about it.

Nope, it won't.  I've been taking daily acyclovir since the drug came out in the 1980s, and blogged about its anti-HIV abilities here:
