These are the supplements I take:

NAC 600 mg 2 x daily
Selenium 200 MCG 2 x daily
SOD 3 x daily
Beta Glucan 2 x daily
Shilajit 2 x daily
Saventaro3x daily first 10 days then 1 x daily
Silver water 2 ounces daily (for parasites here in Central America)
Reservatrol 50mg  (not with super cat’s claw) 1-2 x daily
Cat’s claw 50 mg 3 x daily
Astragalus root 500 mg 1-2 tabs 3 x daily
Q-10 ultra 90mg  26 x daily
Hyperbaric chamber daily for 90 minutes at 8 lbs pressure and 100% oxygen.

Most these are anti-oxidants and are good for anti-aging if nothing else.
Presently I am not on HIV meds, only supplements and my doctor is cool with it.
I take my CD4 tests about once a month and always at 7am while fasting.
CD4s change through out the day and I believe should always be taken at the same time.
As time progresses I will drop some of these meds and see how my CD4 react.

I take two adult gummi vitamins a day. Three if I am extra hungry.

You should really think about adding another 20+ unnecessary/useless pills to that regimen.

Guess you don't have to much thinking when you're in a hyperbaric chamber. ::)

many of us do not have hundreds of dollars (a lot of money) to toss around for unproven supplements. Heck, many of us can barely afford our prescription HIV meds, assuming we can at all (ADAP lists?)

Thing is, unless we are diagnosed with a specific deficiency by a doctor, taking a boatload of pills will not, as has been proven scientifically, do anything to boost or maintain our immune system.

It sucks money out of our thin wallets that would be MUCH better spent on buying nutritious fresh (or frozen, not canned) food.

 And movies. And maybe whiskey.

For some reason some people would rather criticize and ridicule than just share information.
The question asked was, "What supplements are you taking."

Presently I am sure there are lots of my supplements doing nothing helpful and will attempt to weed them out with monthly testing of my CD4s. Hopefully I will be able to offer the reduced list and lab tests to others if and when that time comes.

Cheers,
Hoover

If you're taking, say, twenty different supplements how do you figure out which one is working and which isn't?

At any rate, correlation does not imply causation, so in the absence of studying each supplement by itself and how it effect one's immune system there's little room for any discussion.

Not a single person here has denied you the personal freedom to do whatever you wish with your body.  We're just trying to point out that whatever you think is being so successful in raising you lab numbers isn't necessarily true -- unless you were to halt everything you were doing for six months and see if it's all illusory then what more is there to say, but I'd bet money that you're not willing to do that.

That's not the way internet message boards work. These sorts of discussions almost always tend to range more widely than the OP might have intended. You just have to live with it.

I was not arguing, I was discussing. As this is an open thread, I do have that right. Besides, a lot of people read these things without contributing, for many reasons. I would hate to see questionable science go ... unquestioned.

Miss Philicia,

Thank you for your concern, I am sure you have seen it all by now.
You are correct in that I will not be willing to stop all the supplements for a 6 month period.
With that said, I will drop a few and test the CD4s each month. Yes that is limited, but that is the way I intend to do it. (the chamber developed an issue and was shipped to France today so we will see how the next CD4 tests go without its' influence)

Our daughter was a type A personality full of life to an exhausted young adult.I thought she had HIV and tested her for it but she is negative. She tested positive for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Her doctor put her on most of these supplements. In two months she has gone from sleeping 15 hours a day to exercising, feeling better and looking for a job. A month after getting her on the road to wellness, I tested positive and started it on myself.
My anti-aging doctor takes and prescribes all these supplements and regularly has our labs done to check for problems. First rule in the medical field is "do no harm" and the lab work indicates no problems thus far.

In our country lab work is not expensive and you go to it like any store and get what you want done without a doctor prescribing. Last time I checked with WHO, our country is #3 in the world in health care with the US at #27. I feel confident that my actions are causing no harm, but am not implying that they are helping either. Time will tell one way or the other.

Cheers,
Hoover

J. Edgar,

The fact that you have an "anti-aging" doctor speaks volumes of how you view healthcare and I suspect that any meaningful dialogue with you on these issues is probably pointless.

You are quite free to indulge yourself with all and any manner of unproven (supplements) and ludicrous (hyperbaric therapy) practices. If you wish to spend your money in this way, feel free. Given your CD4 count, HAART is not necessary in your case, at this stage.

In future you might want to avoid fallcious arguments like the one you've offered about the US being ranked 27 on some WHO list whilst your county clocks in at number 3. You come across as snide and uninformed.

Okay, so according to your signature your body is controlling the virus well, supplements or no, we'll never know...good. I like. I like lots.

But this...

Hyperbaric chamber daily for 90 minutes at 8 lbs pressure and 100% oxygen.

You pay for this? v labwork!?! or a pension plan?

Matt,

I am still not sure about the chamber, but it has caused the severed nerves to grow back in my partner's jaw after surgery two years ago. Hospitals use the chamber to help wounds heal, grow back nerves, treat migraines, alter the brain chemistry of autistic children and even treat Lyme's disease.
(Maybe my brain has been altered?)

We are old and retired queers, what else will we spend our money on?
I can make the expensive mistakes, share my results and possibly save others from my folly.

Hoover,

Don't let the naysayers get you down. I say try them out, see how they work and whether they improve things for you.
I would stay away from anybody trying to sell an expensive supplement that's advertised as made purely for HIV. However that's rare - most things can be bought fairly cheaply and are good for the body overall.

During the brief interval that I wasn't on a norvir boosted protease inhibitor my cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar were all normal without a statin (although I didn't drop the fish oil).  Too bad Isentress screwed up my liver and muscles.   ::)

You know if you think about girls while you're doing it it doesn't count.  Alternatively, as long as your balls never touch...it's still not gay.

I have said it all that pertains to HIV and my experiences to this date and will report when my next labs come due.  I have spent years researching the perfect sex drugs, techniques to restore foreskin and cure for Peyrones disease, but that is for a different group.

Last time I checked with WHO, our country is #3 in the world in health care with the US at #27.

Hoover, the last time WHO did the health ranking by country thing was in 2000. The country which ranked third was San Marino, and last time I checked that was a small republic within Italy, not Central America.

The US ranked 37 and the country from which your IP originates ranked 36. Quite a bit different to what you portray. Just sayin'.... Oh, and the UK ranked 18. :)

As the OP this is why i wrote my thread carefully and put the question to people who take supplements we all know there are many arguments for and against which i asked if we could leave aside. I think some of you have been quite rude to hoover just because he takes what he takes thats his choice .

Ann thanks for the updated numbers on how Costa Rica rates.
Apparently the numbers that the medical establishments post are outdated.
They show Japan, France then Costa Rica.
UK is number 18?
I LOVE London, maybe that can be a good excuse for us to summer in Europe!

Thanks for the kindness Tommy. Yes I am new to this and will probably learn a lot as time progresses.
I may even look back and wonder what I was thinking with all these supplements, but for now I think I am doing the right thing.

Definitely whiskey. Definitely.

Hell YES........whiskey. Definitely....... along with omega 3 fish oil and a one a day mulit-vitamin, also will chew on a smal clove of garlic and sometimes a small piece of ginger root, this keeps all the oral buggers at bay  ;D

Puhleez. The skraits are so boring. They have so many hang ups and limitations that it gets annoying. And believe you me, they are really easy to "turn" gay; just take a look at mancunt or adam4adam and count how many "bi curious," married, and supposedly straight men are looking for cock.

I think the real fantasy is the opposite: many, if not most, straight fools would love to get their dick sucked by another dude. They're just too socially conditioned to openly admit it.

Word.  I actually know a lot of straight guys who like to joke about being gay.  They are the ones who thought up all the exceptions to having sex with a man, but would still make you straight.

God, when i was in my twenties, it seemed hot to seduce a straight guy. Them when I discovered what sloppy hot messes of paranoia and crazy there was in that "questioning" community, I quickly grew out of it.

Also, Republican sperm tastes like asparagus and coffee.

Back to the OP, I am still waiting for a study that signals, barring a specific and noted deficiency, the actual help that supplements DO for HIV, specifically CD4 count.

Until VERY recently, vitamins in the USA were using the same formula cooked up prior to and during World War ONE to assist soldiers who were suffering from many vitamin deficiencies in their extended stays, with terrible diets, in European foxholes.

Even now, the tweaks made are based on broad estimates of the population. I absolutely agree that no one will keel over from taking a multivitamin, eating a healthy diet consisting of many vegetables and high quality proteins, staying hydrated, and exercising when possible.

But I remember the mid 1990s, when "mega-dosing" was in vogue for the HIV community. Taking TOXIC levels of vitamins and minerals. I knew people who died from that, including several prominent leaders of the gay community here where I lived, and live still.

Over The Counter is not the same as Non-Toxic. Especially when we mix and brew our own "cocktails" with seeming ignorance of the potential ramifications. More especially when we mix THAT with HAART, which is likely the most powerful chemotherapy we will likely experience outside of supervised doctor supervision.

So yes, I am a skeptic. And not at all hateful, actually. Hateful would be to let poor suckers die to prove my point, without making a stink.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

I know there are arguments for and against vit pills but lets leave those aside, so if you do take supplements what are they.?
I live in spain and eat a healthy meditterenean diet but have recently started taking supplements.
Omega 3
Vit D
Selenium
Multivit with minerals.

I guess im trying to find out if im missing anything that could be important.

Hi Tommy,

Sporadically (I'm not disciplined enough to take anything consistently) I take

Cod liver oil (mainly in winter or if I feel under the weather)
A flax oil/borage oil mix (only when skin issues act up)
a multivitamin (this is a new thing, and I'm still ambivalent about it.  I've always belonged to the "one can get all one's vitamins and minerals from a healthy diet" camp but have recently been having second thoughts about that.)
Reishi (mainly in hopes of preventing cancer)
Cordyceps

A lot of things that some people take in the form of supplements are for me simply a normal part of my diet and have been since long before I had HIV--garlic, fish, bitter melon, green tea, shiitake mushrooms, for example.

As for probiotics, I eat a lot of cultured foods, not only yogurt and kefir but lots of fermented vegetables (kimchi, natto) and I think I get them from that source.

Does anyone have any really good information about alpha lipoic acid?  A friend recommends it strongly.  But it's not the type of thing I can see myself taking.  Of course I've done the standard google but nothing I find really satisfies me.

No fantasy for me baby. I'm a master at getting straight meat into the sack.

MtD

If he's in your sack he ain't straight. Definition, baby :)

Yes, exactly - so they are probably just closeted gays.

I personally don't think any straight guys 'would love' to be sucked off by a dude. They may agree barring other options but if they 'would love' I doubt how straight they are.

I seem to remember it was you who is intensely curious as to how it feels to take a cock up the back door . You should hire a rent boy since you cant stay away form gay sex topics . Just keep telling yourself this when he slips it in ... it ain't gay if ya don't push back .

For the last few months I have been down to only 2 supplements - one vitamin D 5000 IU softgel to counter side effects from several meds, and melatonin to help with sleep. I have a 1 year supply of many more supplements I stopped taking. I may cycle through them over time, but I will most likely have some excess.

When in doubt, run your supplement list by a good ID doctor and see what advice you get.

(Also, ps - jkinatl2 - those HIV+ people who took toxic levels of vitamins - they died from poisonous supplements, really????, or AIDS?  People saw IDs before there was HAART and I don't think any doctor would let a patient poison himself to death with supplements.)
