Visited a close friend in the hospital today
« on: January 13, 2008, 02:12:54 pm »
Hi All,

I have never felt so helpless as when I am standing at a hospital bedside. My Friend is a cool older lady and she needed surgery. So I went to visit her after. I was afraid that she would be all alone. Fortunately she was awake and even through the pain she still had jokes and her spirits were high.

I kept fading in and out from the present to the past. All the machines and IVs were just reminders of the many times that I or someone that I loved was in the hospital. I guess that I am surprised to find that after almost 20 years that the memories still can come back and be just as powerful as they were then.

I managed to have a good visit with one of my best Straight friends at my Synagouge.

Oh, you may have felt helpless. But your visit was far from meaningless.  I am sure that your friend really appreciated you being there.

Of course the memories are still there.  It was extremely good of you to visit her though.  I know that meant a lot.  No one likes to feel alone in the hospital.

Hi DAF

I agree with Bear, I remember back in 2002 when I was going through a very bad seroconversion I had the best Doctor and the best nursing care..but it was having my best friends at my bed side that got me through the days.

We don't always remember the nurses who looked after us but we do remember the friends who came to visit...you cared enough to go and see your friend, believe me, she will remember that and appreciate it.

Hugs

Hello (And Welcome),

Your dear friend, is very fortunate to have you as a friend and by her side. And I know all to well the helplessness, of standing there by the hospital bed, whether it be at the hospital, a hospice or a nursing home. The memories can be very powerful, and I also have to agree, that your friend appreciated you there.

I agree, Daf,

You may have felt helpless, but your presence there meant a great deal to your lady friend.

Oh, and as Ray said, Welcome to the forums!. I look forward to hearing more from you.

HUGS,

Thank you all, I had forgotten what support can do for you. As an individual you don't always see the things that count. The welcome  means a great deal to me. So all of you take care and best wishes for the new year.

Hi DAF

I agree with the others, your visit probably meant more to her than you realize.   I know exactly what you mean about dredging up those old scary memories....

When I go into a hospital now, it conjurs up those frightening memories of spending endless days and weeks there, waiting for death that didn't come (in my particular case).   I have done a pretty good job of 'blocking' those bad memories, or at least burying them pretty deep, but a trip to the hospital can certainly jog some of them loose.

Glad you've joined us.

Hugs, Alan
