Backward Step
« on: October 07, 2011, 07:03:20 pm »
Hi Sorry its been awhile since Ive posted but could really do with some pointers, got my latest test results back today and although my viral load still shows undetectable (less than 40 copy's per 1ml) my CD4 has plummeted form 346 to 199, I haven't been ill and until receiving the results have felt very up beat for the first time since diagnosis, the clinic says don't worry but i am, what could have caused this dramatic fall and the fact that its now below 200 means i now technically have AIDS. I keep fairly  fit and ran a half marathon five days before the bloods where taken could this have a Bering on the results ? could really do with some input , i live in the north of England and the clinic i attend really don't seem to be able to give me any advise or ressons for the drop in CD4 .

your cd4 count can change by 100 pts within a single day, so the change in yours (350 to 200) is not much more than that. Then there's always the possiblity that this was a lab error. Plus it's never about the difference in two lab results (because of lab errors, minor illnesses, and the fluctuating nature of tcells) but the trend over at least 3 or more lab results. Before you should worry about this lowered count, you need more results.

And before you really worry even more about it, you cannot begin to claim an AIDS diagnosis just by a one-off tcell count. ;)

I can understand that. I think we all can.

I had horrible numbers (<200) for over 10 yrs and hovered around 250 to nearly the next 10 years. While I not to let the numbers overwhelm me, they sure did cause me a lot of worries and sleepless nights for a lot of those years. What I came to learn, after not being in the hospital again for nearly 15 yrs now with cd4s ranging from 175 to 250, was that it's not how many cd4s that you have but how well they do their job. ;)

after nearly 20 yrs of AIDS (26+ since infected), I'm still not obsessing about them (well not too much LOL ;) ) , but I must say that I'm glad to see that my cd4s have stayed in the range of 260 to 335 this past year. I just got back my latest results (of 330) that showed I'm still holding stable in the upper part of that range. (the chart is my sig line covers 13 yrs of tracking my lab results)

In the grand scheme of things, your results over the last 6 months have been excellent. It looks like you found the right med to work for you right out of the box; but it just takes a while for everything to even out and settle down. Try not to fret too much, and wait to see what the numbers look like during the next 6 months, so that you have a year's worth of data to study.
