3 months post exposure will give you a conclusive negative test.

Thanks for the quick reply

I'd like to ask something else if you don't mind; how reliable is the test i took after 3 weeks since the initial symptoms?

Thanks

It's not for a recent infection but it does show that you have never been exposed in the past.

Meaning you took the test to early for it to be accurate for the exposure you are concern with.

un,

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point.

The symptoms SOME people experience (not all do) are not caused by the virus itself. They are caused by the process the body goes through while producing antibodies. So, if you've tested negative after having had symptoms for a while, it's not likely to be hiv infection causing them.

However, you have had a risk and you do need to confirm your negative status at three months. I don't expect your results to change.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

un,

I do not expect your negative result to change.

Start using condoms and it won't change ever.

I agree with Ann. I expect you to continue to test negative at 13 weeks.

Stop with the drama. You have a bit more of waiting time to get through. Get productively busy with other things and that will help the time to pass. Don't bother telling us that you're too scared to think of doing other things because that won't fly in here.

Now, get busy. We expect you to come out of this ok. Keep us posted on your result.

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the very smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure to the HIV virus.

Which all means that it is virtually certain that your negative result at 9 weeks will result in another negative at 13 weeks.

Now as I said previously, stop indulging in all this drama and get busy with other things until you re-test, at which time I expect you to get another negative result.

ARS symptoms if one has them come at 2-4 weeks post exposure and last 1-2 weeks. So your cough has nothing to do with HIV.

You've already been told that based on your negative results we expect you to continue to test negative when you re-test at 13 weeks. You need to get busy with other things instead of making yourself more anxious by trying to "figure things out" now. You can't get an absolute answer right now.

Get on with your life doing other things. We expect when you finally test that it will be negative.

If you can't understand what has already been explained to you then I sugget you move on. You were told that you need to get a test at 3 months post exposure to obtain a conclusive negative result. There is no more that we can help you with than has already been advised. You are correct we do not answer questions summitted to PMs.

You don't have any hope? We've told you that we expect you to continue to test negative. Stop wasting your time and your life feeling sorry for yourself. Life is too short to be doing that. Get on with other things until you re-test and get the negative result we expect you to receive. Really. i

Un,

Your positive HBV result does not have any effect on your hiv test. You ARE hiv negative.

However, your doctor should have told you that you need follow up testing for the Hepatitis B. You may or may not have a chronic infection and you won't know until further tests are conducted. This is important!

As far as hiv goes, you are ok. Make sure you use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will continue to avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

Ann

PS - if you have further questions about Hepatitis B, you can read our HBV lesson by clicking here.

un,

I already told you that hep B won't affect your hiv test result. The hiv window period remains the same.

Besides, you didn't necessarily get hep B from this encounter. Don't assume you did.

...and make sure in the future when you have intercourse, whether with professionals or others, that you always without exception use condoms. That's the way to make sure you won't ever have a problem again about a sexual exposure to HIV.
