Atripla in the UK ?
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:45:39 pm »
Have any UK residents started on atripla yet ? I imagine it is now available on a "named patient" basis, the same way that Kaletra tablets were 6 months before general release.

The reason i ask is because i spoke to my doctor about this and he said he has heard rumours that the local health authority will probably "actively discourage" atripla from being prescribed due to budget constraints.

Anybody in the Uk heard anything similar ?

As far as I am aware Atripla has not yet been approved for use within the EU (although it is bound happen sometime soon). Unlikely, I would have thought, that it would be available even on a 'named patient' basis, as the equivalent is already available as a two-pill combo; Sustiva and Truvada.

As long as pricing of Atripla ends up being roughly equivalent to the above two-pill combo I can't think why it would be discouraged by health authorities - as I understand it this combo is one of the regimens recommended by BHIVA for anyone starting treatment for the first time.
