Fuzeon and Bacterial Pneumonia??
« on: January 07, 2007, 12:04:03 pm »
I have now been on Fuzeon for the last 14 months and besides the usual ISR's and some possible insomnia, I have not had problems with it.  However, in December I developed a cough accompanied by a mild fever (99-101 degrees) which concerned my doctor enough to give me a ten day cycle of Avelox. (fluoroquinolone antibiotic)

Within the first 24 hours, my fever was gone and I finished the antibiotics on December 20th.   Two weeks later, (five days ago), I woke chilled in the middle of the night again with a 100 degree fever.  Even though I had a flu vaccine shot this year, it seemed at first more like the flu.  I was coughing a lot less and really had more chills and muscle aches.  After the first day of trying ibuprofen and tylenol to little avail for the fever, I switched to a 12 hour (NSAID) called Indocin SR.

The Indocin immediately gained control of the fever and long as I take one twice a day it stays fairly normal. (when it wears off my fever begins to slowly climb again) Other than a few chills, muscle aches, occasional cough, and general fatigue I feel OK.  My appetite has remained strong and I am taking all my meds and continuing my fuzeon injections.  My Dec labs were- CD4's - 455, VL <50.

Since I know that Fuzeon can increase the incident of Bacterial Pneumonia, I was wondering how many people have experienced it.  I believe I remember Rab saying that he had it three times in one year?  Do the above symptoms sound like what you remember?

I have a scheduled appointment with my doc in nine days.  Even if I want to push up the appointment, I  just got new labs done last week.  It will take a couple more days for those results to come back.

It used to be a few years ago I never worried about all this.  Now, I take everything a little more seriously.  My last case of Bacterial Pneumonia was in 1999.  I got pretty sick with a high fever accompanied by a lot of coughing.  My immune system though is actually in better shape now on paper than back then.  I just wonder if my body still has the ability to rid itself of this without more antibiotics.  I just hate having to take more than are necessary.

Any thoughts from those of you with knowledge / experience??

Thanks,

--JJ
