Lawrence King, 15, was declared brain dead by two neurosurgeons about 2 p.m. at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner. King's body remains on a ventilator for possible organ donation, he said. He was shot early Tuesday in a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School.

The teenager sometimes wore feminine clothing and makeup, and proclaimed he was gay, students said.

"He would come to school in high-heeled boots, makeup, jewelry and painted nails -- the whole thing," said Michael Sweeney, 13, an eighth-grader. "That was freaking the guys out."

How sad and a shame that that homophobia started at such a young age. Makes you wonder what that kids parents(the one who killed the other kid) is like and what they were teaching him.

America loves its guns, and anti gay fundie religious tv fanatics, as well as a president that share their views...
Kids are easily brain washed at the age of 15. No doubt believing the victim was a real threat, somehow in some way.
Is it a hate crime? Absolutely. Should the buck stop with the shooter? Absolutely not!

I've been in a Jr high school. Being called fag is the highest of insults.
All I heard in the halls were kids calling kids fag. Both girls and boys.

I hope the 15 year old is tried as an adult, but would like to see them look into
the effect TV fundies like Pat Robertson and a homophobic president like GW
has on a typical 15 year old. No one seems to want to face that issue.

I remember being called faggot, queer, girly boy, etc in junior high. It's heart breaking to see that though, we have come so far, this type of thing is still happening.

My heart goes out to the family. At least one good thing came out of this, the boy will live on as his organs have been harvested for donation.

And, yes, I think the shooter should be tried as an adult as well.

Rather than seeing this child tried as an adult, I'd like to see his parents tried as accessories to murder. It's a parent's responsibility to ensure their offspring respect other human beings.

Yes, that's right, I ultimately blame the parents. What the hell was this kid doing with a gun in the first place? When my daughter was that age, you can be damned sure I'd know if she had a gun. It's about time parents started taking responsibility for their children. If they don't want to do that, they shouldn't be procreating. Simple as.

I must say I agree with Ann.  I'm not saying the child shouldn't be held responsible; of course he should.  But what he did is such an unusually horrendous thing; he must have observed such beliefs at home.  My daughter got into plenty of trouble when she was a teen, but nothing like this.  I think his attitude was learned from his parents.

Oh please.  There are plenty of instances where the same good parenting manifests itself in entirely different results.  I really don't think your proposal Ann, with all due respect, is appropriate, mostly because I'm not sure it could be practically applied under the law.  Not because I don't believe that there many instances where parents are entirely negligent in raising their children.  For example, my uncle and aunt provided the EXACT same parenting to their two children who were only 2 years apart.  The girl grew up delightful and well-adjusted, and the boy was an utter rebellious hellion and drug addict. The father was a man of the clothe!  And not a wacko one either, but I nice Episcopalian.

If we're going that far why not license people to be able to breed, something I've long supported actually.
