Just curious about taking more Vit C along with my Atripla and Centrum Vit. My centrum has only 60MG of Vit C in it so I was going to take extra. Any thoughts on taking more Vit C from more exp. people on this forum? Thanks

A lot of times, people click on the thread hoping to see an answer instead of posting a response.  I would like to know the answer and I take neither Atripla or vitamins.

Hope you get an answer soon.

As i understand it, vitamin C is water-soluble, so you will excrete the excess vitamin C in your urine.  It may be a good idea to pair your vitamin C with a Stress-B complex, along with vitamin D and calcium, which work well together in absorption.

1000 mg of Vitamin C isn't extreme, but it may be prudent to supplement with 500mg at first, for a few weeks, just to be sure that there are no side effects, such as itchiness.

I can relate to the feeling of having to make up for lost time when it comes to your health, but incremental changes are the best way for you and your MD to detect abnormalities, or benefits, in your health.

It was many years ago above a 1000mg I think but not sure it made me wary of mega doses of vitamins.

I just read this on wikipedia

There is a longstanding belief among the mainstream medical community that vitamin C causes kidney stones, which seems based little on science.[26] Although some individual recent studies have found a relationship,[27] there is no clear relationship between excess ascorbic acid intake and kidney stone formation.[28]

Here we have Vitamine C sold in a 1.000 mg dosis.  My doc also told me an excedent is eliminated with urine because of its water solubility and it has no side effects...

But you should ask to your doc if you really need it...

It is my understanding (from many conversations with my herbalist friend) that with any autoimmune disease you want to avoid taking anything that will activate the immune system, such as high doses of vitamin c, as this helps that auto immune disease more than it helps the person.

I take a multi vigilant every day, with a calcium and vitamin d, and fish oil with my atripla everyday.

I am by no means an expert on the topic of health, but I am a firm believer in Vitamin C. One of the first champions of vitamin C (Linus Pauling) did die of cancer, he was pretty old at that time. I believe that it being water soluable means that you would have to take EXTREME amounts to be hazardous. I take about 2000 mg a day and find that in this point in my life that I suffer from very few illnesses whereas I had frequent infections as a child. I would consult with a doctor as to how it might affect the efficacy of your medication. They should be your primary source of information. However, just from my perspective, I love Vitamin C. Even if it is just a placebo effect, I still appreciate how it makes me "think" that I am healthier. I actually use the color of my urine to know if I am taking "too much" and cut back.

Vitamin C will not interfere with the efficacy of hiv meds. If you would feel better asking your doctor about it, by all means do so.

Haha...Ann, I ask my doctor about anything and everything. He would hate it when I would come in with the list of vitamins, herbal suppliments, and workout stacks I was taking. Hey, he wanted to know EVERYTHING that I was taking...haha.

Vitamins aren't a problem for poz people - unless one is overdosing, but overdosing on vitamins is bad for anyone.

Herbal are another matter and when one is poz, caution and care must be taken whether hiv meds are in the picture or not. Some, notably echinacea and St. John's wort, should not be taken by anyone who is poz regardless of hiv meds.

Anyone who is poz should let their doctor know what prescription medications, supplements, herbals or over-the-counter meds they are taking, whether or not they are also taking hiv meds. If you don't let them know, they can't do their job properly.

I think that warning goes for anyone, Ann. Not just those on HIV meds. You can even have a bad reaction just from mixing over the counter drugs and homeopathic remedies. So that is why I was so careful about telling my doctor. He thought it was a good thing even if he was a little annoyed that I put every little thing down to the type of protein shake I was taking. HAHA.

It's true that overdoing the vitamin regimen can do harm.  When I was first diagnosed, my daily regimen included green tea extract, selenium, maitake mushroom tincture, carnitine, biotin, vitamin C, stress B complex, turmeric, Vitamin D, calcium, CoQ10, flax seed oil, fish oil, probiotic yogurt, carrot juice, lemon juice with olive oil, red wine and dark chocolate.  Every day.
My liver enzymes were 5X the normal rate.  I had to cut out the green tea extract, selenium, carnitine, maitake mushroom tincture and pro-biotics.  My liver enzymes are now at a normal level.

@ TabooPrincess  -  Yeah, you have to be careful with Vitamin C.  Excessive amounts (like several grams a day) can cause diarrhea.

Years ago (when I was neg), whenever I had a cold or flu-like symptoms or some other illness, I would take 3 grams of Vitamin C per day and I don't recall any side effects.

@ NY2011 -  That's a good list of supplements.  I've taken most of the items you listed at some point, but not all at once.  I consider green tea must have.  I always notice a difference in my health when I'm taking it.
