Looking for some help/advice
« on: January 27, 2015, 06:19:11 pm »
I recently found out that someone extremely close to me tested positive for HIV. He and the family had a counselor, however due to studying abroad I wasn't able to go through this with them. I feel helpless and lonely. I cannot sleep at night, waking up in panic attacks because I am scared of the worst that could happen to him and the effects it will have on the whole family. I guess I am just looking for resources, or anyone to talk to who has been/are going through this or similar situations. Please anything will be of help. Thanks.

I'm sorry about their diagnosis, and can totally understand the fear you have right now.

I hope that I can reassure you, they are going to OK. It takes time, they'll need moral support, but it gets better.

With medical care, nothing about their quality of life will be compromised.

I would say "constant contact" via emails, voicemails and lots of listening if you talk. This isn't about problem solving so much as it is a lifeline to hope. I was diagnosed in October and I brought only one person onto "my team" besides medical, other hivvers and my case worker. That one person was a dear friend and she lives 700 miles away. We chatted by text online every day until I joined the 21st century and began Skyping with her. Then I visibly cried and cried and cried. She actually flew to be with me and led me in guided breathing and relaxation. Wow, I can't believe the support from my dearest friend. I would say just try to be there and educate yourself on the importance of taking meds plus any other medical care so you can affirm these things. I believe peace will come to both of you. It's slowly coming my way.
