Just for fun - A Quzz on Queer Art and Literature
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:13:44 pm »
A friend challenged me to come up with a quiz on queer art and literature on facebook, though I would post it here too to distract everyone a bit. Free feel to use google.. ;)

(1) While it's not disputed that Walt Whitman's poems are openly homoerotic, the claim that he was an active homosexual was not supported by his own admission. Through which poem modern scholars often cite to argue for the case of his sexual relationships with men?

1. Song of Myself
2. Calamus
3. O Captain! My Captain!

(2) Painter Francis Bacon liked his "rough trades" and kept a few of them as lovers. One of them was George Dyer, whom he claimed to have met while Dyer was doing what?

1. Cruising in a tearoom in Eastend
2. Selling drugs to his bohemian set of friends
3. Burgling his house

(3) In some of most transgressive sexual fantasies written by Jean Genet in his novel "Funeral Rites", the character Paulo is both his and whose lover?

1. Francisco Franco
2. Adolf Hitler
3. Benito Mussolini

(4) Which writer famouly turned down Marcel Proust's masterpiece "Remembrance of Things Past" for publication because s/he feared that the colorful homosexual character Baron de Charlus, who hired boys for sex, would be considered by readers as a misrepresentation of all homosexuals?

1. Andre Gide
2. Oscar Wilde
3. Dorothy Bussy

(5) Edmund White's play "Terre Haute" protrays functional discussions in a prison between Timothy McVeigh, aka Oklahoma City bomber, with which American literature figure?

1. Gore Vidal
2. Noam Chomsky
3. Philip Roth

(6) Jean Cocteau did many things in life, including writing the ballet "Parade". The music was written by which composer?

1. Claude Debussy
2. Erik Satie
3. Maurice Ravel

(7) The "gayest" pop singer of this generation Rufus Wainwright's latest CD "Release the Stars" has another gay pop icon as executive producer. Who?

1. Neil Tennant
2. Elton John
3. George Michael

(8) Two of the following actors appeared in both the original cast of the play and the later HBO TV movie adoptation of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America". Pick out the one who's only appeared in the movie.

1. Ben Shenkman (Louis in the movie)
2. Jeffrey Wright (Belize, etc in the movie)
3. Mary-Louis Parker (Harper in the movie)

Depending on responses, answers will be given in a week.

Have fun, Shaun

I'll bite:

2, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 1

You've got a problem with the last question, because only one of the three appeared in the original Broadway cast.
"No one will ever be free so long as there are pestilences."--Albert Camus, "The Plague"

"Mankind can never be free until the last brick in the last church falls on the head of the last priest."--Voltaire

Thanks for playing!

You might be right.. so just pick out the one you think has appeared in both the original cast and TV movie.

Thanks edfu for playing.. since no one else bite, these are the answers:

1. (2) The one that is often quoted is in Calamus #41, in which Whitman wrote, "Among men and women, the multitude, I perceive one picking me out by secret and divine signs...Some are baffled? But that one is not?that one knows me...I meant that you should discover me so, by my faint indirections."

2. (3) Bacon loved his "straight" lovers, in particularly from East End. Dyer unfortunately committed suicide some years later while still living with Bacon.

3. (2) "Funeral Rite" is probably the only book that depicts the (frictional and gay) sex life of Hitler, though some historians have dubiously suggested that Adolf was a closet case.

4. (1) Ironically Proust's novel was turned down by another gay writer Andre Gide, a decision he regarded all his life.

5. (1) In real life, Vidal did exchange many letters with the Okahoma City Bomber before his execution.

6. (2) Satie composed the music for Cocteau's "Parade".

7. (1) Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys is the executive producer of Rufus Wainwright's latest CD "Release the Stars".

8. The question has been changed to which actor has appeared in both the original cast and the HIV series of "Angels in America". The answer is (2)

I defied the odd by only getting one question correct. I confess I didn't know the answer to any of these. I've never seen "Angels in America". I've never heard a Rufus Wainwright song and had no idea that he was "the gayest pop singer of this generation", which must be pretty damn gay.

Sean I guess you haven't been around the forums long enough to realize your audience. Any quzz (?) that doesn't contain questions about Madonna or Ellen or the true color of Britney's muff or how much does Rosie weigh is doomed to failure. ;D

Example:

What is the name of Paris Hilton's dog?

a. Bruiser
b. Mr. Pibb
c. Tinkerbell
d. Nicole

Oh mind, I can't believe Rufus Wainwright is not more well known, in particularly in the US. He's Canadian and David Griffin tried to break him into the US market without major commercial success, but he's big in UK/Europe. His last CD "Release the Stars" has reached no.1 (if not, no.2, can't really remember) in the UK chart.

Rufus is so gay that his most noted performance in the US is a complete recreation of the famous Judy Garland's 1961 concert in the Carnegie Hall:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5475107

There's also a webcast of the whole concert in NPR too.

i could care less about Paris hilton or her dog (Dog's are animals! Not accessories!!!)...but i do know that Bruiser is the name of Elle Woods dog. I love me some Elle Woods.
Why did they stop at Legally Blonde 2? Why not make a 3rd...or better yet, a tv show...

(Forget the broadway musical...Laura Bell Bundy could never compare to Reese Witherspoon's portrayel in which she originated.)
