Roddles Dear,

I went on a little road trip today which round tripped to San Rafael and back to Forestville...  I purchased a tank of fuel at $3.55 per gallon in Forestville at the only gas station within 5 miles.  I did see a station in Novato with a member price of $3.36 and everyone else was higher than the station in Forestville.

There was a news story a few weeks ago claiming that so many people had stopped driving so much, there was a glut of gasoline across the nation.  Gas prices were supposed to go down in order to stimulate sales but,... They went UP, and UP and Higher and Higher.  I did not alter my driving patterns to stimulate any sales  ;D  Have the best day

I doubt if there is much a diff in gas prices. Its like controlled.
It would be great if one place had gas for $3.25 a gal and another for $1.50,
but it doesn’t work that way.
I imagine the scene from the movie NETWORK, the setting in the dark room
around the huge table with those green lamps. And being told in no uncertain terms,

So much for a free market in the gas industry. Or any other for that matter.

The prices around here are always different depending what street you are on and what station it is.   Like right now one 3.09, another is 3.11, 3.15, the most I think is 3.21.  All for regular unleaded.

My car requires premium gasoline, not that it matters. It only has a 12-gallon tank, so the difference in overall cost is about $2 a tank between regular and premium.

I am paying $3.39 a gallon at the moment. I fully expect to pay more than $4 a gallon sometime this year.

I'm glad I get 35 miles a gallon.

Oh, and Scuddles honey, unlike the miniscule counties in the eastern U.S., we have land here. My home county is slightly more than 5,500 square miles and my work area, the area I cover as case manager, is more than 10,000 square miles.

I ain't walking.

You saying that the difference of . 21 cents per gallon is not a big difference. I only have to drive 8 miles to get it for .21 cents less per gallon. Diesel, is ridiculous, it can vary as much as 50 cents a gallon.

After I filled up yesterday, the price dropped .02 per gallon.

There was a station owner a couple of years ago (in Salinas), who filed a suit against the gasoline distributer.  I believe he owned 8 stations in the area and did not have the option to decide how much he should be charging for fuel.  Have the best day

Here in Nuevo Mexico, gas is running $3.21 per gallon for regular, and $3.55 for premium. Our Volkswagen Turbo gets about 30-34 mpg highway, and considering the 80 mile round trip commute 6 days a week it's a good thing. At the other end of the spectrum is the truck, which I have to take into town today to get a bunch of building materials. It takes regular. But with 4 wheel drive, and an extended cab coupled with a 460 cubic inch ( 7.6L) V-8, it swills dead dinosaurs to the tune of 11 mpg. It has 2 gas tanks and costs me about $120 to fill them. It can get depressing to see the gas gauge actually move while driving...

I try not to let it go below 1/2 a tank. That way it doesn't hurt as bad when I fill it. Today I payed $3.17/Gallon

I would love to use mass transit. I adore the bus. I love the subways/trains. In San Francisco, I was completely enamored of the cable cars.

I know people say Americans will never get over their love affair with the car. But I think we will.

But, until we get said mass transit in place, people will still have to drive in my neck of the woods because there is simply no way to get around otherwise - walking notwithstanding if they can stay in the same area.

We would certainly be in better shape if we did walk more.

I haven't 'filled up' in a couple months.  I have a big old boat, which costs about $20 for just 1/4 tank.  I doubt I will be 'filling up' for a long time to come.

Well, all you rural folks always claim you can't afford to live in a large city, but that's how one does it.  You take the car money and add it to your rent, and then you can afford it all. (also factor in car insurance, maintenance, etc.)

I'll stay in the rural area. We don't have to concern ourselves with drive by shootings, electric going out and being stuck in a subway. No thank you, you can keep your city living. I'll stay in the country. Besides someone has to grow the food you are going to eat and the subways and buses don't run out in these rural areas.

Fine.  Then don't complain about the lack of ASO's out in Nowhere's Ville and driving 500 miles to an AIDS doctor.

And I've only gotten stuck on a subway for 15 minutes max once in the past 3 years, but then it's only 2 stops to City Hall.  Actually I can walk most places, hence why I'm not a lard ass.

I live in a city, though not a metro by any means.  They have buses here than run Mon-Sat.  And you have to walk about a mile to get one, then transfer several times.  It's all rather tedious.  Although, if they had subways, I'd be happy.

I live in a rural area and had a job interview once, when I moved to Guerneville.  The job site was 20 miles away so, prior to the interview, I called the transit number to find which bus and the times.  Bus # 20 leaves Guerneville and meanders toward Santa Rosa, that part takes two hours for about 30 miles.

Then you wait and wait for another bus which goes North to River Road, Hwy 101, the Airport and the job site.  It would take 4 hours to travel 20 miles (if going direct) by bus.  Of course, I did not get hired so why worry?  ;D Have the best day

As one who also lives in a rural area, I have to say that I don't live here because I can't afford the city. Rather I live here because I don't like to live in an urban environment. No matter where you choose to hang your hat, there are trade-offs that need to be taken into consideration. When sifting through all the pros and cons, Norm and I decided that rural life is what we wanted for ourselves, we are ready to accept some of the inconveniences of it, preferring the longer drive to the city over actually living there. We both hope some day to find work out here, negating the need to drive in every day. But even then I  personally like the 40 mile drive into work, it gives me time to plan my day, and on the way home, the time helps me to decompress before getting home. :)

My Captain, I drive a '94 Ford Crown Vic.  I used to have a '70something Cadillac that was so huge, when I went to the grocery store I always parked on the end, fearful of hitting the other cars.

Edited to add: It was a Cadillac El Dorado.  I just remembered that a few minutes ago.

There's just something fun in driving a car big enough to need its own Zip Code, no? ;D I had a 73 El Dorado many moons ago. With the 500 cid (8.2L) V-8 the hig would smoke the fron tires for as long as you cared to hold the gas pedal down. Or until it ran out of gas....

What was that song "Pimpin ain't easy?" LOL...just kidding  ;D
My Dad and I rebuilt a 65 Ford pickup, that was big enough for me, the only thing I remember about it, the hood opened the wrong way.

I love to hear stories from Grandparents when gas was .10 or .25 cents a gallon and that was a lot then.   :o

Isn't it crazy Bear?
and if we had one of each of those we would be millions, if they were all in reasonable shape or not....depending on what it was.  And those cars were built like brick shithouses....sturdy...today we pay all kinds of money for crap.  :-\

And not to change the subject but land too.....my grandparents bought thier house and 40 acres for something like $11,000.....people's kitchens and bathrooms cost more than that now.....those were the days  ;D

Snowangel, there was a  small 707 acres farm close by that sold two weeks ago here for 2.4 million. Only had 3-10,000 bu. bins, a small barn and small one story 2 bedroom home.

Wow....707 is small, that would be a huge farm around here.  I think it all depends on perk tests and how the land is zoned.  In the eastern part of Mass. that is what my mother friends sold her cow farm for and it was maybe a 100 acres.

The gas around here has been staying at 3.09 suprisingly.

Bear,
Those prices seem pretty amazing, but when you factor in the average paycheck of the period, they are priced about what a similar car costs nowadays. My '86 AMC Eagle wagon (Erma) was right around $11,000 when she rolled off the assembly line in Kenosha. In todays dollars, that's about $31k. Today, what is now know as a "Crossover vehicle" such as the Subaru Outback, runs about $30k nicely equipped. I have a friend who had a '58 Cadillac ElDorado Brougham which was hand built to order, and when new cost a staggering $13,500. A new Rolls at the time was about $10 grand, and a new Chevy or Ford convertible could be had for less than $3,000. The mind fairly boggles.

As Ever,

My car right now sits between 1/4 tank and empty.  I'm going to go to the station in a few minutes to (maybe) fill it up.  Yesterday, prices were $3.29/gallon for regular unleaded.  So, we'll see how much it costs to fill up the tank (btw, I have a '94 Ford Crown Vic).

One of the things that I love about Erma is that she gets 25 mpg. That's not too bad considering her size, and the four wheel drive setup, but when you figure in the 22 gallon gas tank, it gives a cruising range of between 450-500 miles depending on if I've gone four wheeling or not. Plus, she has a low compression ratio, so she'll burn the cheap stuff just fine. I imagine even diesel would work in a pinch...

Yesterday, I was in Santa Rosa and noticed the Costco price for fuel was 10 cents cheaper than the other low rent fuel locations... they don't take Visa or MartyrCard and it i a little far away to use all the time but 10 cents per gallon over a year may be some savings  ;D Whaka  ;D Have the best day

just paid $4.09 a galon of gas in San Francisco yesterday  >:(

I was wondering when and where the gas prices hit $4.00... Rich (Wins?) in San Francisco, where you can't get much closer to the refineries  ;D... I was at Costco the other day and noticed their regular unleaded to be 10 cents per gallon than anyone around the river and Santa Rosa for that matter.  Of course to get that 10 cents, you have to purchase a 50 buck membership  ;D  Have the best day

From traveling from Northern Calif to Southern Calif over the last few years, I have noticed the further you get away from the refinery (Richmond in the SF Bay area and Wilmington in L.A.), the lower the prices.  I bought 20 bucks yesterday in Forestville at $3.55 and noticed today the price had gone up to $3.59 overnight.  The same station in Santa Rosa was charging $3.64 today.  ;D Have the best day

Our little town has regular at 3.39-3.35 and 3.29. I go to the BP at 3.29.. :D I love how they raise the price before they ever buy another load at the high price to put in their tanks. Diesel is 4.29 a gallon as of Friday. 400 gallon of Diesel runs a semi about a day and a half at 1716.00 a fill up, 5148.00 a week. (we have 10 trucks on the road) Farmers are really going to be hurting this planting season because of fuel costs. Farm fuel is 3.23 a gallon a little over a dollar more than last year so far. Look out for the cost of food this coming winter.

You do go to the store and buy groceries Philly. You are paying for the cost of the increase of fuel charges in the cost of the food you buy. So you aren't totally getting by without being affected by the high fuel costs.

I used to drive a 69 Cadillac Coupe de ville with a 500 engine that was made for an El Dorado. It was red with a white leather top and interior and when you put the pedal to the medal, the front would actually 'lift up' as it roared..woahhh..and you found yourself embedded in those leather seats. It got 6 miles to the gallon. This was in the 80's. I was spending $300.00 a month on gas and one day crossed over after doing the math that I could buy a brand new car for $300.00 a month. One day, after work, I pulled into the driveway and my nephews were dancing around the car...."ronnies home ronnies home", I surprised them by jumping the curb and continuing on around the back patio continued up into the woods and when I could go no further, parked it, locked it and left it there. Took the city bus to work for three months, saving my money and bought a more economical and sensible car..turned out it was so sensible that I sometimes felt that I needed to get out and push on the access ramps to the freeway so as not to get hit... ;D I missed that cadillac most when I would be getting passed by everything on the road.. :-[

I filled up Erma yesterday at Costco. The regular unleaded there was $3.17 a gallon, and the old girl darnk a whopping 21 gallons of the stuff. She has a 23 gallon gas tank and at her gas mileage this gives me a cruising range of just over 500 miles, so it's really not too bad.
Rondrond: I had a '68 ElDorado with the same engine, and if I was nice to it, I could get about 17-18 mpg out of it, if I wasn't it quickly plummeted to the single digits. God could that car go! I loved racing the boys in their Mustangs with it. The front wheel burnouts always freaked them out ;) Yes gas has gotten expensive, but I'd still rather have a car and be able to go where I want, when I want to and not have to rely on constatly bothering people for rides. I suppose I could move back to the city and use public transport, but there is nothing worse than riding a bus with a bunch of drunken vomit covered slobs at 5:30 in the morning. Country life is so peaceful, it's worth the extra cost to live here.

I should be ashamed to say that the reason for such poor gas mileage was what my Mom called my LEAD FOOT. I would get a rush from some little sport car pulling up beside me thinking that I was in grandpas caddie and then when the light turned green I was already 2 miles down the road before they had even taken their foot off the brake ;D and they had no hope of catching me, no mater how hard they tried 8) and they did try...

Capt, I am so bad. I have no shame. Eventually, they would pass me, as I was parked at the gas station. Though I had started out with a full tank, I watched that gas needle literally move before my very eyes from 'F' to 'E'.... But...it was worth it.  8)

My body produces the cheapest gas. It's free !
I won't guarantee it will power anything. :) It might drive you away, however.

Shall I make you all shiver and scream?????? ??? ??? ??? ???

I paid 9.02 US dollars a gallon today.....in Belgium. I was lucky.. it just went down from 9.12  last weekend.... :-[

I filled my car and I paid  a freaking  $ 155.00  :o :o :o :o :o

So, that was it. I am either selling my car; or just use it in emergencies. Not a hard decision to make.

Hermie,

The reason YOU pay so much for gas is due to some extent to our long-standing refusal in the USA to pay all the associated costs of using fossil fuels.  We should be paying comparable amounts here but that ain't happening any time soon.  It would cause economic chaos and make gasoline a commodity only the wealthy could afford.   We will have to pony up eventually, pretty soon I hope, to combat the effects.  Or we're doomed.

A tendency toward severe car-sickness (motion sickness) as a child instilled a distaste for driving I carry to this day.   At 52 I don't ride my bicycle as much as I used to and grocery stores aren't within walking distance (trying to carry 20 bags home or on public transit would be challenging, too) so I drive more but still hate driving mostly because of traffic.  If I carried a gun in my car I'd have been in prison long ago for murder.

Well my answer to the on going rising price of gas was to trade in my Ford f-150 with the 5.4L V8 engine and get a Toyota Scion.  The only problem is no more car SEX since the Scion is to small ;)

Last night on the local news here in the SF bay area, they said we will most likely see the gas prices reaching $8 a gallon by the summer.  Has anyone else heard that?   :o

Just think next year the price will be double of what we are paying for it now! If everyone took one day and did not purchace the gas and boycott the damn stations and stayed home they might get the message.

There was an article in the Forestville newspaper; telling us that because of the cost of fuel, family owned markets (such as Speers Market) could not raise the credit dollars to stock their shelves.  Because the shelves are not stocked, the customer is driving out of town to shop at bigger markets. A breakdown of our gasprices; a "mere" 62% goes to the government   :o

At €1,58 per litre €0,98 goes the government, and the remaining €0,60 goes to the oilcompanies and gasstations. In our case it's the government to blame for this mess  >:(

Of course, the european governments also use the additional energy tax funds to provide good public transportation. Something that's not an option in most of suburban america. Trust me, if I had a choice, I would gladly take the train in California to work. I just can't. In Silicon valley, the bus takes 1h15 minutes to do the mere 5 miles from my home to work because a change is needed. Walking would be only a little bit slower, but it's not an option because there are no sidewalks ! Bicycling is not safe as there are no bike lanes and the express ways I have to cross are 5 lanes wide. The only realistic option is a car. I had to learn to drive because of the above. I drive a Prius. I drive little so the gas prices don't affect me much.

I don't go to town much these days but I was in Forestville on Sunday and the cheapest gas in the area was $4.15 over Memorial Day Weekend.  We have been conditioned to accept the rising prices during holiday weekends.

That was last week, this is now... Today at the cheapest fuel stop on the Russian River, the cost of fuel is now $4.29 per gallon.  I used to spend 7 or 8 bucks every day at that market because it was convenient for around the last three years.  That oil company has a store with bread, milk, cookies, candy, soda and beer... Let it rot on the shelves!  ;D  Have the best day

We are up over 4 bucks for regular around here now.

My Grandmother turned 93 last month, I was talking to her last week and she used to pay .25 /gallon back in the day.

I wish I could ride my bike to work. It's 7 miles but the problem is I have a mile long stretch on a 2 lane road with no shoulder where people drive 55 mph. Also I get off work at 1:30 in the morning and I worry about riding at that hour. When I lived in Seattle I rode my bike everywhere. I may have arrived rain soaked and sweaty but I had great legs!

Since Roddles started this thread in late March, our lowest price for gas on the Russain River was $3.55 per gallon.  That same  station is $4.59 today for the low octane regular.  There was a link to view on my homepage this morning saying gas prices are expected to remain in the $4.00 price range through 2009.  Did not read the article  Have the best day
