I went for a walk this afternoon and during my journey I struck the proverbial "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow.
Someone had left an assortment of goods out on the footpath (side walk) for removal by the local council, which included a microwave, a dvd player and cd/cassette/radio player. It was a bitch getting them back to my room but so worth the effort! All are in excellent condition, fully operational and I feel like it's Christmas time ;D
On the subject of Christmas, is it just my imagination or are stores putting out their Christmas displays earlier and earlier each year? My local supermarket has been selling Christmas decorations and food for about the last 3 weeks.

I LOVE WHEN THIS HAPPENS.
I had a little xmas 2 weeks ago. I went to a little shop in the suburbs where the major swiss discount department store and supermarket puts stuff at even cheaper prices - usually 75% off. They had some LED and other new type bulbs. The LED's retail here 30 bucks a pop. So I dared buy about 6 different bulbs. The cashier rung them out at 1 franc a bulb. Whats that for a discount? 30 to 1? I said "they are a franc?" She said yeah, why? I said OK. Then I went to my car and figured, I need to go get more. So I put like 30 in a basket, but that cashier was just signing out. The replacement said they were 75% off, not a buck. Oh well, didn't buy them. But still appreciated the mini xmas.
As for the xmas, yes of course they put the crap out earlier and earlier.
What are you watching on that DVD player? Do you still have cassettes? Mine are in storage somewhere. I couldnt bear to part with all the intricate mixes I made in college and all the pretty covers, and the ones friends and lovers gave me, etc.
PS - who on earth is paying the prices for these LED bulbs? Must admit they are miraculous. No heat, practically no energy consumption.

They are miraculous and beats the hell out of the old ones mom used to make me put up on the tree when i was a kid. You know those huge incandescent bulbs with the brown cord. I hated those, I would always get shocked when I was trimming the tree and Mom would just sit there in her blue robe and pink slippers stirring her glass of boubon with a little glass spoon and laugh at me, and of course father was down screwing the maid so he was of no help :-[ We would plug those lights in and they drew so much power it would dim all the other lights in the house.
ahh, memories of Christmases past.

Your Mother reminds me off my paternal grandfather------The pleasure he got out off electrocuting well just about anything was huge, sadly Grandmama Quickly got bored off the bribes and ' compensation " Payments . She had him quietly handed other to a secure facility for the care off North Europeon citizens no longer understood by there communities. Large place in Northern Norway , so family history has it. Differcult even for Norwegians to visit she said.

I think you would change your opinion after felling 4 12 footers, two carts off holly, one off mistletoe , dragging them back in December weather moving the furnature to accommodate the forest. Grandmama was weak after ordering all that to be done , I can tell you.

A 420 Lumen 6 watt Led bulb costs around €35 overhere

We've used the large C9's for years (along with a few strings of clear miniature incandescent bulbs). The solution is easy - use a dimmer, and what queen doesn't own a tabletop dimmer? We dim those big C9's down so low they're barely warm, but they still look nice. I've had very bad results with the LED lights; they don't last long. In theory, an LED can last a really long time, but those cheap Chinese LED's with crappy voltage regulators / reducers don't do justice to how an LED should work.

I've borrowed several DVDs from the local library. Slight problem though, the DVD player is setup for a widescreen TV and my TV is the regular 4:3 type. Still it's watchable and I'm currently enjoying Season 3 of DEXTER!

It's official, Christmas sucks the big one! I wasn't going to share, but as they say misery likes company.....
It's 6 am Australian Eastern Standard Time and I've been up all night. Why? you ask. Well kiddies because uncle GROWLER is a PIG. Yes, yesterday he brought a packet of 6 Woolworths store brand Christams Fruit Mince Pies (think of them as minced fruit cake in a sweet pastry shell) and ate the lot himself last night. Since then his arse has been running faster and sloppier than the soft serve dispenser at McDonald's in a heatwave. In 2 1/2 hours the chemist opens and he'll buy some immodium. Until then he'll probably just bother the forum with his inane ramblings

Woolies are so big here that they could start shooting every 10th customer that walks through their doors and still be the market leader!
I'm pretty certain it wasn't food poisoning that did me in, just plain old gluttony. I ate the whole pack of fruit pies and they are in essence a fat and sugar rush mixed with a fruity laxative, just perfect for getting the poop shoot moving. I'm happy to report I did get the Imodium and I no longer need to change my undies every 2 hours so I should get some sleep tonight, as long as we don't have another heroin overdose (we had one this morning)

I'm not in America. I live on a Rock in the middle of the Irish Sea. I kid you not. Ever hear of the TT motorcycle races? Yep, same Rock.
Woollies was pretty big in the UK too - most towns had one, most larger cities had more than one, but they still went down. Freaking economy strikes again.

Woolworth's was a paradise when I was a kid . The downstairs had the last of the old time soda fountain and ice cream shops and the rest was filled with toys . I was determined to have a superman outfit from Woolworth's but my older brother snatched it right out of my hand . The superman outfit was defective though and you couldn't fly in it like I thought you could , when we got home and my brother walked outside in it I pushed him off the porch and he chipped a tooth .

Mom told her to mind her own damn business . The truth was mom tried to talk me out of buying the 45 when I picked it out but wouldn't say why .

Our Woolworth's was on the corner of NW 27th Ave. and 183rd St. in Carol City, a predominately black but intergrated neighborhood at the time.... We all sat together. I'm still pissed about the GI Joe walkie talkie we bought for $2.95 that didn't work. Fuk them and their cream sodas!
No wonder they went under, bastards.

I grew up upstate NY there was no segregation in my lifetime thats for sure. There was a Kresge and a Woolworths.
In the 80's there were still some Woolworths in NYC. There was one under or near that huge Daily News building on 42nd Street. 42nd street, from the East River to the Hudson, was a time capsule well into the 80's. The Times Square block was fabulously wonderfully seedy. And way over past the Port Authority, you'd think you were in any barbary port in the world. On the East side, you had the decaying Grand Central, complete with cruisy urinals and Zabars. Then the fab Crysler Building. Then Woolworths where you could go find notions and candy. Way over was Tudor City which always feels very 30's and 40's to me.
Woolworths was closing up shop all over the US in the 80s and bit the dust in the 90s.
The Australian Woolworths never ever had anything to do with FW Woolworth.
I think a lot of us have nostalgia for old brands, old stores, etc. But also I don't mind change. At least some of the stuff people our age feel nostalgia for were REALLY old when they disappeared. Who really cares now if something like the Gap goes bust?

You've reminded me where I know the US Version of Woolworths from....The movie, "Come Back To The Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." For those who are not familiar with this classic, it's a wonderful little ditty from the director Robert Altman about the reunion of the "Disciples of Jimmy Dean" fan club. It takes place in a five in dime store located near the town where James Dean's film "Giant" was filmed. The film stared Cher in her first major cinematic role as well as Kathy Bates and The gorgeous Karen Black. My ex and I used to hold film nights for friends, where we'd mix jugs of pineapple daiquiris (long story) and watch Camp classic's and this film was one of our favorites.

I never understood the race thing. My best friend until I was 6 was an Aboriginal boy named Cory. He had 2 older sisters in their late teens and one of them was a helper at the kindergarden I attended. I was lost when he moved town, we were that close. Australia is no stranger to racial prejudice, it wasn't until a national referendum was held in 1967, that Indiginous Australians were recognised as Australian citizens. Today it's more subtle, inequality in access to health, education etc.

I had a set of walkie talkies too when I was a kid and they worked!....sorta. More crackle than actual sound but my sister and I went through a phase where we'd only talk to each other with them. :)

The Gaming Guns for children at Harrods was sweet , all the shop assistants wearing bullet prove vests in Harrods Green, all ex SAS men off course. Off course if fell victim to Political correctness. Though some enterprising fellows hold buying parties on Private estates and in some off the older schools .
So sad when shopping for life's essentials is reduced to the selling model off food containers and cosmetics .

One persons big sleep that always seems to keep others up. Hope the poor sod survived . Growler its been interesting, funny at times reminded me off days gone by but unless this is some kind off art project why are you still there? Vamps with anger management issues , hygiene standards that most developing countries would balk at , psychotic homophobic night workers , insect and bird life and off course those mustard yellow bricks.
I am sure I am not the only one who is fretting for you our new friend , Wolfie has to put on dark glasses to read your posts,and be close to a bed so he can lay down afterwards.

A little late to this thread, but in reference to southerners and their guns: I was bought a muzzle loader by my father before I was born. He was so sure I'd be interesting in hunting and killing animals as much as he was.

I hear ya, he used to take me Deer hunting and I would intentionally miss the shot...he finally stopped taking me. Actually when deer season started one year, he came into my room and informed me he wasnt taking me hunting anymore and threw a Doll at me.

I've never been hunting, and have never even held a gun. I've only been fishing once and I begged my father to do that when I was a kid. He didn't have a clue what he was doing so we never attempted that one again. Anyway, it was boring.
We went hiking on the Appalachian Trail once and somehow I got separated from the group and they spent hours finding me.
