cystoscope -- apprehensive

Hey guys -- I'm scheduled for a cystoscopy in 3 weeks. I could go the out-patient route and get totally sedated, but the time and money are ruling that out. So my urologist will do it in his office. I'm a wimp, a total wuss about this. Never in my 62 yrs has anything been inserted into and up my penis (not even a catheter), and it freaks me out even to think about it. I will have some valium beforehand, but still . . . Are there any of you who have had this done and were as apprehensive about it as I am and can share any thoughts or ideas?

Gonorrhea test used to be a cotton squab of your urethra and it hurt like hell. I had that done once and never again. Can't imagine something going up the peep hole without discomfort though there are gay porn out there that show guys doing exactly that for pleasure. Hope things go smoothly for you.

I've had one of these done. Had it about a year ago to look at my bladder from the inside.      I know it sounds weird and painful... but it wasn't.  And no, I'm not a person into sticking things up my pee hole!     The most awkward part was being naked on my back with a nurse cleaning it up    I can't remember how, but they numb it up... I think it's with some sort of liquid.  I actually sat there and watched on the monitor - it was interesting.  I didn't even feel it going on nor coming out.  However, with all that said... where I DID feel it is when I went pee!!!  Eeek. It burned for about half a day... but got better every time I had to pee. And I had to pee a lot because they put saline in you and then all that has to come back out. 

I know it sounds painful but it's not nearly as bad as one thinks it will be.  Hope yours goes well. Good luck!

my ex had that when he was having prostate issues, I didn't go in and watch, but he said they put some kind of numbing gel and he too said the most uncomfortable was the nurse holding his penis while the doctor scoped.  he too had the burning sensations afterwards

i would ask if they could sedate you with versed. this is often done in a clinic setting. it is very fast acting, as well as the effects are quick to wear off. you will be aware of what is going on, but will be sedate. it also produces retrograde amnesia, so you will not have a memory of the discomfort.

BAD ADVICE!!!

Versed (generic name midazolam) should NOT be administered to a patient taking several hiv meds, including but not (by any means) limited to Sustiva. This is particularly true of oral Versed. This is the type of Versed that would most likely be used in an out-patient setting.

Oral Versed should NOT be co-administered with atazanavir (Reyataz), darunavir (Prezista), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), lopinavir (in Kaletra), nelfinavir (Viracept), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Invirase), and tipranavir (Aptivus) in the PI class. Intravenous Versed should be used with caution in the presence of these meds.

Oral Versed and/or intravenous Versed should NOT be co-administered with delavirdine (Rescriptor) and efavirenz (Sustiva) in the NNRTI class, and used with caution with etravirine (Intelence) and nevirapine (Viramune), also in the NNRTI class.

Versed seems to be ok to use with the NRTI class, as well as with maraviroc (Selzentry) and raltegravir (Isentress) (entry and integrase inhibitors, respectively).

BAD ADVICE!!!

Thanks Ann, you stopped me from doing the research for the Versed.  Remember, I had that surgery last year where I was given Versed with horrible interactions. 

I've learned my lesson with this, always make sure by asking point blank if the doctor or a anesthesiologist has reviewed your medications for possible drug interactions beforehand.  My anesthesiologist met me 5 minutes before the surgery and was shocked to discover I have HIV which means he didn't review my meds ahead of time.

Thank you Ann for that information. I just knew that it works very well in my office that i work in for sedation. As far as i know we dont have any HIV positive patients. I should have look up drug interactions before i posted that. This is why everyone should disclose to their doctors of their HIV status and their medications.

Remember, I had that surgery last year where I was given Versed with horrible interactions. 

I remembered somebody did and as soon as I read Versed alarm bells started going off, so I looked it up to make sure I wasn't imagining things or my memory was trying to make me look like an idiot. It does that when it thinks it can get away with it. Which is more often than I care to admit.

I hate it when alarm bells go off right next to my head like that, gives me a headache.
