Galaxy of Stars Honor Oprah Winfrey in Talk Show's Final Episodes

Madonna, Beyoncé, Halle Berry, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ... the list goes on of A-list stars who descended on Chicago Tuesday to wish Oprah Winfrey farewell at a taping of the talk show queen's third- and second-to-last episodes ever of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

"I feel the love, and I thank you for it," Winfrey told the audience at one point, adding that the viewers present and around the world "honor me in the deepest way possible."

"They have literally risen up to change the world," Berry said of Winfrey's viewers.

Cruise, who walked out on stage to the theme music from Mission Impossible, quoted Glinda the Good Witch of the South from The Wizard of Oz, and told Winfrey, "You always had the power [to change lives], and that is the lesson you brought."

Madonna was slightly less sentimental: "A lot of people are inspired by Oprah. I am one of those people," the singer said. "She has balls and a wealth of compassion, and I have learned so much from her."

I agree Janno. I have no personal issue with Oprah. She was outstanding as Miss Sophia in The Color Purple.

I guess I shouldn't have given into my profane side, but I didn't want to disappoint Cliff.

Gawker did a funny review:

http://gawker.com/5802968/the-only-thing-that-matters-right-now-is-oprahs-farewell-spectacular

clips:

Then Madonna trotted out, and proceeded to mummify the guest of honor in a giant spool of red string, a kabbalistic ritual she says "always brings her luck."

Diane Sawyer and a giant tree appeared to say 25,000 oak trees had been planted in Oprah's honor.

Patti LaBelle and Josh Groban dueted on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," answering the question, "What will I not be downloading immediately on iTunes?"

I hate Oprah and have never, ever seen The Color Purple. I didn't even know she was taping the last of her show.

Actually "hate" is a strong word -- I just ignore her.

However, if Oprah had HIV I think she'd have applied herself more than Magic.

Seriously?  With your good taste in movies I woulda expected differently.

I totally agree.  I refuse to even say anything in that Magic thread.  That's how much I think of him and what he has done in the fight against teh AIDS.

Tru dis. I guess I'm like that to some extent.  Hence my refusal to this day to spend two or more hours watching some films that are highly regarded such as  Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, Maurice, and Casablanca.

Casablanca deserves its classic status.  The other two are hardly essential viewing.  Maurice is gay treacle.   Salo is interesting but a bit of a misstep by Pasolini.

I boycott most Ben Affleck star vehicles.  Though I like him enough in Good Will Hunting.

I adore Pasolini's Teorema and there are a couple of others like Pigsty and his version of the Decameron that I find somewhat enjoyable and culturally significant. I simply refuse to see Salò no matter what good things I may hear or read about it.  I don't think I have the stomach for two hours of depravity, images of minors being sexually abused and forced to eat large amounts of excrement.  Not very fetching, regardless of its intellectual value.

Affleck is da pits. Not one single flick that could redeem him as an actor.

I sometimes find her entertaining, but often find her as a know-it-all.  I know I've mentioned this before, but I went to her show in 1995.  It was a show about TV stars from the past.  She loves celebrity shows, but I suppose those are the ones that get higher ratings.  Back then, she would shake every audience member's hand at the end of show.  Those MAD TV sketches were spot on.  The lighting and filters on the cameras make her look much better on TV than when you're face to face with her.  However, she was very pleasant and asked us where we were from.

Oprah's Fat Cam:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aYjAOQwlH8

But this Mad TV sketch is one of my favorites.  It plays on the view that she has become detached from regular folks.  Oprah tells her viewers how to survive in a bad economy.  She says if you have a large staff, cut it in half.  Buy a mountain.

Also, she hasn't always shown an acute bullshit detector for her guests. Cause maybe sometimes she's full of it herself.

Um, James Frey anyone?

Oprah ... gave Frey a "lashing." At the time, she was upset to learn that his memoir, which she included in her book club, was not based entirely in truth.

I used to like her a lot more than I do now; I was a regular viewer in the 90's (when I was homebound with AIDS, ya know).   I guess I'll watch these last shows, just to see the guests....

I personally think she is pulling a Naomi Judd here, with this "farewell" routine....

BTW she has the Judds doing a show on her OWN network, and let me tell you, that whole family is WAY too much for TV.   I have never seen such squealing and taking on over crap....every other minute is a tear fest over some "breakthrough" in their relationships with each other....

Oprah loves the Judd's.  They come on at least once a season to whine about their relationship.  So, they have their own show and Rosie will be taking over Oprah's Chicago studios.  I will be interested to see what kind of show Rosie does.  Rosie has a hard time working for others--where she isn't in complete control.  It will be interesting to see how things go between her and her new boss--The Oprah.

SHe did fine when she had her own talk show, and there were execs above her.  Presumably she'll have control over her new one.

Copied from Dlist:

Your real job in life is to figure out what your calling is, and then do it.
You can help somebody, you can listen, you can forgive, you can heal, you have the power to change someone’s life. Start embracing the life that is calling you, and use your life to serve the world.

Take responsibility for your life. You are responsible for the energy you create for yourself and the energy you bring to others.

You don’t have to depend on anyone else. ’Jerry Maguire’ was just a movie. No one completes you.

Pay it forward. Be that safe harbor for somebody else. Connect, embrace, liberate, love somebody, just one person, then spread that to two, then as many as you can. You’ll see the difference it makes.

For all of you who get riled up when I mention God and you want to know which God I’m talking about, I’m talking about the same one you’re talking about. I’m talking about the alpha and omega, the omniscient, the underpresent, the ultimate consciousness, the source, the force, the all of everything there is, the one and only G-o-d. That’s the one I’m talking about. God is love. And god is life. And your life is always speaking to you.

Many in the media reported Rosie was taking over the Chicago studios.  It seems that isn't exactly true from what Ms O said.

I watched the last show.  I thought she had some really good advice--she even gave a shout-out to the gays at the end.  But, she kinda started sounding like some religious leader.  I don't agree with her that there are no coincidences--the everything happens for a reason way of thinking and is all designed by God.  But, whatever.  I hate that thinking when people say God saved them from a tornado or terrorist attack, while many others died.  I guess God didn't have a plan for them.

The one thing that was funny is that she did not get rid of any of those commercials.  She comes back for 3 mins and then another commercial.  I realize she is a business woman, but I would have thought she would have had limited commercial interruptions.  I mean, this was the very last show and the last time she will probably have that big an audience.  Just think of all the important things she could have told all those viewers, but instead we saw a Tide commercial..lol.

It sounds all so very sweeping, but if you really look at it, her parting words to her viewers:

Get a life.
AIDS isn't for sissies.
