1. Dodgy rashes get worse if ignored
2. Projectile vomming = instant get-out pass for clinical team meetings (file for future use)
3. Yellow skin only looks good on bananas
4. No one answers phones on Fridays (this, I knew)
5. My GP is a plonker (um, ditto)

Did a 1am dash to A&E friday, after temp spiked and I started feeling proper acid trip spacey. Moment of revelation came when i did the “tumbler test”, n guess what, it didn’t fade…
By the time I got seen, I was not at all well - apparently gave a word-perfect rendition of Atwood’s “Helen of Troy does countertop dancing”, (complete with tres dramatic “this is a torch song / touch me and you’ll burn” flourish ending) before vomming on the shoes of a very nice nurse from SA, & promptly passing out.
Short version:
Having been lumbar punctured/ scanned/ bled dry/ generally harassed by every passing medic, the conclusion was reached that I had some form of meningitis and shingles. And an ear infection, randomly.
IV antibiotics and antivirals , plus whacking great doses of painkillers and dexamethasone. Had to have hickman line in , cos regular canulation wasn’t happening (nine goes, I repeat, nine goes, by everyone from little houseman to top anesthetist. I’m sure even the porter had a needle in his hand at one point) Spent next days in and out of sleep/fever/general ick-ness, feeling very small.
It was decided this morning, after much negotiation, that I could go home, subject to terms and conditions. Quite handy really, as I had already decided to leave. Health care professionals deffo make the worst patients.
Temperature has come down, and I know both whom and where I am. Vomiting more under control too.. Agreement is I go back immediately if any of the above recur/worsen, & check in with them tomorrow. In the meantime, whole bag of TTOs, all sorts, line still in to continue with a couple of things IV, and I have been forced to endure the community nursing team’s (sporadic) presence for a few days. From experience, I know this will at some point involve at least one large, Polish lady talking VERY LOUDLY and s-l-o-w-l-y, calling me sweetheart, & trying to make me eat chicken.
My numbers, they are as pants as I‘m feeling. Still waiting on Hcv VL, but judging by my alts/asts, the bastard is on the move again. Either that, or I’m just drinking too much.
I smell of hospital :(
Kate
PS - Big thank you to tim, eldon, chris and matt (star boy) for noticing my absence.

Dearest Kate,
Thank goodness you've come out of all that and deemed well enough to go home! I've been keeping an eager eye out for you as well, but didn't know what to say, so I just sent out as much positive energy in your direction as I possibly could. Had a feeling you were in hospital and damn, I hate it when I'm right at a time like this.
To be honest, my heart's been in my mouth, so to speak, and I can't tell you how relieved I am to hear from you again. Whew!
Rest up hun, and make sure you go back at the slightest sign of trouble.
Hugs,
Ann

Thankyou everyone. Went ot different, better, hospital, where my clinc is on Saturday, cos I was feeling bit confused & not very well. Stayed over & had numerous tests run. Seem to have acquired pneumonia from somewhere, prob last hospital stay
Chest feels bit like someones whacked me with a baseball bat. More antibiotics, some treatment for various secondary issues, reduced the dosages of some meds, so hopefully body will be slightly less overloaded.. also now have a v.fancy nebuliser thingy, which i decided they ain't getting back :)
Still looking bit like nasty yellow fiat punto, but hope that’ll be gone soon. H.line still in, annoyingly, hopefully out by end of the week though. Bizarrely, my coordination seesm to have disappeared, & staying upright/walking in a straight line is quite challenging
ill health is very borinmg. Have told my body it has max 7 days to make a full recovery - in meantime, house has become strange combo of hospital/tropical glasshouse (am permanently, arctic, cold, despite fever, hot chocolate et numerous jumpers) & am making full use of laptops wireless capabilities.
Thank yo all again
Kate
