HIV Study Done by Zip Codes
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:30:17 pm »
Got this story sent to me today by my local NPR station about an HIV testing study. Essentially, they are going door-to-door asking if people would want a free and confidential HIV test. FTA: "“The goal of this study is to use a big public educational campaign to see what portion of people who are offered HIV testing, confidentially and without charge, would actually yes,” explained Little."

Not sure how I feel about this. In generally getting as many people tested as possible is a good thing. I just wonder how much participation there will be and what will be the attitude of those who answer the door.

By way of a little background the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) runs a pretty big HIV clinic (link in the story), The zip codes mentioned, cover the areas of San Diego where the GLBT population is the highest. Or at least have that reputation.

I wonder what happens with those who test positive and have no insurance?  Will CA have the funds or will they have to start an ADAP waiting list?

I hope they're considering that part.

Good question I don't know the answer too that. I do know that the clinic at USCD can't or won't take people if they have insurance already. I looked at them for treatments but didn't qualify because I had insurance. I don't know if there are other means testing beyond that.
