If you draw a single line, you can't say where are the negative numbers, the zero and the positive numbers.
As soon as you draw a second line that cross the it, you can do so.

If you don't like math, here is a metaphor:

Like the floor and the tree.
Lets call this tree the tree of knowledge, as it allows to know negative, zero and positive.

And if you are enough lucky to hide from the sun under an apple tree, you can still eat one to feel less thirsty.
