Title: The Advocate's List Of Gayest Cities
Post by: tednlou2 on January 11, 2012, 01:08:20 am
I can't decide whether The Advocate is being fully serious in their criteria of what makes a city the top gay cities.  I think they're trying to be funny??  Using criteria such as nude yoga, WNBA teams, Mr. Leather and softball competitions, and whether certain bands have played in the city seems a little silly.  They do have a few serious criteria.  So, this is meant to be funny, right?

Salt Lake City is the number one gay city? Who'd a thunk it?

Wow! I knew my hometown of Orlando was gay, but to be ranked no. 2? I've always thought Ft. Laud was gayer than O-town, pretty interesting. LOL

Most southern cities seem so gay, to me.  Maybe there aren't a lot of gays, or gay services, or gay establishments, but queeny pretty southern cities are just so gay gay gay gay gay.
Savannah and Charleston for example.  How big does a city have to be to qualify, by the way? Palm Springs CA is way gay, and Beverley Hills gayer than a Gabor's pink poodle.  Palm Beach is super gay.  Rich+Prep+Pretentious always makes a place too too gay.
Burlington Vermont is gay gay gay.  Williamstown Mass. The Hamptons are scarily gay.  Lenox Mass. Williamsburg Brooklyn is so freaking gay because in my opinion all hipsters are way more gay than any gays are.  Martha's Vineyard. Especially Oak Bluffs. Any victorian seaside resort is GAY GAY GAY.

San Francisco is the queeniest gayest most fabulous of all, and theres nothing any magazine can say to counter this truth.  Salt Lake City. PULEEZE

WHAT?  West Virginia didn't have any cities on the list?   Shocked :o  In my younger days, I always paid attention to those who screamed faggot the loudest.  They were the ones wanting to do a quick hookup behind the barns after partying.

That must be where my fascination with those tall, skinny, dumb country boy fantasies come from.

You guys crack me up.  Reading is a powerful tool.  In case you missed it, here is the introduction to the list:

"It’s no secret that megalopolises New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles have robust LGBT life — and we’ve even heard tell of little queer hoods like the Castro and P-Town. This isn’t that list.

By Matthew Breen

There’s the official census with information on same-sex couples as a percentage of the population, then there’s our accounting of the gayest places in the USA — and we know the twain shan’t meet. But do we really need another article telling us that the homos gather in West Hollywood and Hell’s Kitchen? That Northampton, Mass., is still Lesbianville, USA? (Don’t get us wrong, we love those places.) Instead, in our third annual accounting of the gayest places in America — according to our totally accurate if decidedly subjective criteria — we look at the per capita queerness of some less expected locales."

The criteria they use is very limited, but presents an interesting cross-section of issues that may affect gays.  By adding or subtracting a few criteria, you could massage this list to look however you want.  There is a saying in marketing/advertising: "Tell me what you want the numbers to say."  The devil is always in the details.  8)

I'm really surprised New Orleans isn't higher on the list.  I mean anal sex between men probably beats out vaginal in NOLA...at least until mardi gras rolls around

I totally believe this--just like the politicians/religious folks who do it.  I'm still waiting for some revelation about Santorum.  Anyway, I knew a guy who worked at an adult bookstore here in Lou.  He said he would have guy after guy inquire about what was going on back in the theater and peeps.  Many of those guys would say something like, "Sick!  Those fags will do it anywhere."  Then, a few days later, he would find them back there.

It reminds me of the time in college that I put an ad for a roommate.  The guy moved all his stuff in and discovered I was gay.  He promptly moved all his stuff out, saying he just didn't agree with it.  FF to a month later and he was knocking on my door (totally drunk of course) wanting to have sex.  The Kinsey Scale got it right.

I agree Danmo.... I was thinking the same thing when I read Orlando was gayer than FTL. Hmmm Willton Manors is single-handedly the gayest place I've ever experienced... Gay Mart, Java Boys, 2 dozen gay bars... and new Moon gets the shout out? Weird... altho I love me some New Moon... I blend in with the lezbeans there and its not meat market like so many other bars.
