Behold The Bear
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:13:50 am »
The Lola Bear.  I first mentioned her to you good people nearly three years ago.  Here herz is today.  I have never, ever had such a bond with an animal as this.  I am a dog lover, but this has still turned out to be more profound of a relationship than I ever expected.

Him wuvs her.

for a hard luck pup, found abandoned on church steps down the road, she certainly fell into a soft spot.

I am utterly amazed by this dog.

I haven't "trained" her really at all, yet she does just about everything I want exactly as I wish.  For example, one thing she WON'T do (at least yet) is a leash.  If I put one on her, she goes completely limp / dead weight.  She also looks heartbroken.  But I want her to be able to walk with me.  She has been coming with me, and you can hear for a good distance when a car is coming.  All I have to do is snap my finger and point to where I want her to go and she goes.  Motion for her to sit and she sits.  In fact, most times I don't even have to do that - she seems to intuitively move and do what I want as I want it.  I'm rather astonished by it, actually.  Beats the heck out of me - as I really and truly do not believe this dog has been trained at all by anyone.  It isn't 100%, mind you - as there was a play encounter with some neighboring dogs where I didn't have her attention well for a good 5 minutes or so.  But outside those rarest of instances, it is most uncanny.  And boy does she love me.  I can pick her up like a a baby and turn her any direction / position (like upside down or whatever) and she is completely trusting and completely unafraid.

I just reread through the old puppy thread and pulled this quote.  It's stil true.  I can hold her like a baby and even upside down and she won't flinch at all.  She now weighs about 50 lbs.

 ;D

Give Sammers a  :-*  for me.  I'm about to snag a cup o' joe and take Lola for a quick walk.  Had insomnia all night and only got about an hour's sleep.  Now it's at the point that I might as well load up on coffee and just get out in the morning.

The Lola Bear.

She's beautiful, and poses quite well for a photo (unlike my beloved hound dog, who passed
away last year).  I'm glad you two are so happy together -- a strong bond with your dog is
very special.

How about a side-by-side photo with you and her, so we can see if see if you fit the old adage
that people look like their pets?

Cheers,

Henry

Hey Tim, I can tell you why your relationship with Lola Bear is so unique.  It is because you rescued her from a horrible life and she knows it.  At one time, humans treated Lola horribly as ultimately witnessed by her abandonment on the steps of a church.  Most probably she had been abused or worse, because to me, abandoning an animal that is so dependent on its owner, for its very survival, is profoundly abhorrent.  So on the night she was thrown out, like so much garbage, she had lost everything, simply by existing.

Then came you.  You "rescued" Lola Bear, from a horrible fate and she knows it every day and will remain eternally "your" dog.  I have rescued many animals and all they want is to please their master and to know that their master will treat them with kindness, leadership and respect.  Once an animal is abused, their view of the world is forever shattered, because they are pack animals and cannot comprehend how their own pack can turn on them.

You are her new pack and leader and by your simply loving her forever, she will lead the life to which every dog aspires.

You know, Joe...it has occured to me more than once that in my largely errant life, she may stand as the one thing I can look upon and confidently say that I got right.  Her gait is lively, her head high, her demeanor gentle and she knows no strangers.

In her own way, though, shes rescued me many times over.

Tim,
Miss Lola is quite the beauty for sure. I know exactly what you mean when you say that you rescued each other. I feel exactly the same way about my oldest dog, Waldo. When we found each other we were both pretty broken, him physically (Leg dislocated, fractured pelvis) and me emotionally. We have brought out the best in each other. There are now five dogs in my life, as well as one husband, and a psychotic Cockatiel named Doody. I honestly believe that if Waldo and I had not found each other, I would never have been able to connect with Norm (or anyone else), would have been unwilling to go through all the cancer treatments/Transplant shit. Although it wasn't apparent at the time, I really think he saved my life. Congratulations to you and Lola, and may you both have many happy years together.
