Age of AIDS Commentary
« on: June 01, 2006, 06:23:31 pm »
All in all, I thought it was a great 4 hour special. It made me feel really stupid for all of those years of ignorance, and it would make a great presentation to health classes when dealing with the topic of AIDS.

My only complaint is that Bush seemed to have gotten off the hook when it comes to his defunding and bastardization of AIDS plans. All they mentioned was his $15 billion dollar grant to Africa ( note that they didn't follow up on how much of the fund actually made it to Africa. ), and that there was 'controversy' over the fact that condoms were ignored in the Bush plan. No mentions of undercutting the $15 billion dolloar initiative, no word on his funding of country wide HIV plans. No mention of 'waiting lines' really shocked me. The only thing that went through my mind while watching it was, "Wow, those Republican figureheads they forced into PBS really did their job, I guess. Nice cover up, ***holes.".

Still worth the watch, though.

Hey Brandon! Good to see you over here in the new place.

I didn't get to see the program you're talking about as I'm in the UK, but I wanted to say hello.

Hello Brandon,

I was only able to catch segments of this airing. I thought I had recorded it, only to find out, I had the VCR on the wrong channel. ???  I will have to watch for a re-broadcast.

You stated  "It made me feel really stupid for all of those years of ignorance"

Brandon, for all the years I have live with this virus, I  actually knew very little, about this virus, and was certainly not as active, in the political arena, as I should have, or could have been.
Sure, I made plenty of donations through the years,I was always able to speak to anyone, regarding my condition(as long as they wanted to listen), went to plenty of fundraisers.. I guess I got too comfortable in my own good health, with this virus, but at the same time, I will never forget so many that have passed on, and what others went through, for the meds that I am on today.

HI Brandon.

So good to see you posting here.  I was hoping you would tag along with the rest of us.

Yeah, I agree with you.  The first 2/3's was great.  I was in the SF Bay Area from the early 80's on and I was familiar with the DR's and City Health Care Directors they interviewed.  I didn't feel shame.  I just felt sad.  Too many memories.

But you're right about the Bush whitewash.  They glossesd over the fine details and that left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Darn it!!! I saw it listed on the television page tonite, and forgot all about it. Shoot.
Hopefully they will have another run soon.
Hey Bailey, PBS has been running AIDS documentaries all this week in the primetime slot. Tonite's show was kinda like the Ta-Da at the end of the fire works........sort of.

I found the second segment rather depressing. It was informative and all, but the whole Bush cover-his-ass coupled with the "preach my dogma or no money" thing left me disgusted and sad.

I didn't get to watch the documentary. I went to the website and ordered a copy. It will not be delivered for another month. I sure hope it is worth the wait, and fifty bucks.

Trish and I watched some, taped the rest, and Brandon, I was amazed at how Bush was coming out as a hereo in that whitewash.

I taped it, didn’t see it yet. But the spinning of the truth as to Bush is typical. Remember "no child left behind", or "clear skies initiative" (to clear the sky of birds, I guess?).

But that Bushwacking has been exposed. We're on to him. Thats why his approval polls are lower than old tricky dicks ever were.

Just keep an eye on next weeks events, Mon or Tues when Bush stands up and, again, warns the nation how awful those Gays are for wanting legal marriage rights and how they must amend the constitution to stop it.

Remind me again, it "is" 2006?

Yes, please! I've just gone to the Frontline website that Gerry linked to and allegedly it will be online later today, so I might not need it... we'll see.

Thanks

Cliff,

I downloaded it by using something called a bit torrent I don't know if you've heard of them or not but they work in the same way something like limewire does to share music.  Theres websites that host the torrents and people share the file to each other, they are usually pretty quick as well.  If the stream of the program on the PBS website interests you and you'd like a permanent copy just let me know and i'll post you one same goes for you too Ann.

I just finished watching a recording of it,  I was mostly interisted in the world history of AIDS, Im fairly familiar with  events in the US but it was eye opening to see the global Picture, and the origins of AIDS in Africa.
Peter Staley was in several segments and Im pretty sure I saw a brief profile shot of Andy Velez..
A nice touch was the interview with the first patient to receive the 'Triple Cocktail'  a term that Ive not heard in years. They didn't exactly give Bush a pat on the back, and reminded me of how little Reagan and Bush #1 did.
I wish they had touched on research and new drugs a bit, but they have quite a bit of more detailed info on the PBS website. I give it a moderate thumbs up overall.
