Kitty Bite
« on: June 30, 2010, 06:11:42 pm »
I resuced a kitty out of my tree and have taken it in until I can find the owner or someone to take him. Anyways...we were playing today and he bit me on the inside of my upper arm, 2 punctures. One of the punctures has now become red and enlarged. Am I at risk for Crypto or anything else with this bite? Is this something I need to see a doctor for? I've had a tetanus about 9 months ago. FYI, he is a kitten and most likely has had no shots.

hi will,

if theres already redness and the bite was full skin thickness, you may want to see your doc & get some antibiotics on board....that old zpak is a handy one :) There can be certain types of bacteria associated with cat bites that are potentially of concern:

    * Pasteurella
    * Streptococcus
    * Actinomyces
    * Staphylococcus
    * Clostridium, etc

typically, if theres infection, redness, swelling and heat at the puncture wound site usually ensue. there can also be red "streaking" marks that radiate away from the puncture wound site, which is typical of pasteurella.

keep an eye on it & neosporin topically!

Willy,

   You should give the little kitty a bath.... in really deep water with something heavy tied to her tail.  This makes it less personal in my opinion.

no worries will. seriously though, a large percentage of cats bites result in infection (in completely immune competent patients). cuz you are poz and the bite is so close to your axillary lymph node, I would get it checked out or at least get some antibiotics called in. better safe than sorry...

Cat Scratch Disease is what inflamed one of my lymph nodes to the point of needing an excisional biopsy (i.e. surgery down to the bone in my groin) so I know it is a very real risk. Fortunately, it runs its course and resolves.

At least you don't have to worry about getting the pathology results that I did. "We think you might have Cat Scratch Disease, or maybe Tuberculosis, and oh, by the way, you're HIV-Positive."

Ok, im going to the doctor on that. I realize it's probably alright, but I'm anal about things like this and better to be safe then sorry.

Wumptastic One-

Aww, I love rescuing kitties too. Sorry to hear you got bitten though. Yeah, definitely have the doctor check it out. Cats' mouths can be ridiculously germy. I'm talking biohazard level sh*t. Given the rate it is swelling up at, a professional opinion is probably a good plan. In the mean time, wash it well and keep it clean, and as for the wound... :P Actually, as for the kitty, consider taking the little one to the vet for shots, a check up and such. And of course, post a pic for us to ooh and ahh over.

Your Boston Buddy

I guess it was dogs I read had cleaner mouths than humans.  I still find that hard to believe.  I've always wondered about what "experts" tell us about dogs and cats.  Well, the first say we should live an almost normal lifespan now.  Then, some of them say to get rid of your cats and dogs or be careful around them.  My doc in the hospital told me to get rid of my dogs.  However, he was the one who had me on mono Sustiva therapy.

You know I'd have that bite checked out if its looking worse.

-Will

Will sorry to hear you haven't learned that pussy can be dangerous.   ;D  ( I couldn't resist... and yes, I'm up at 6am because my pussy wanted out of the bedroom....)   lol.

Anyhow, after you see your doc, your kitty needs to see the vet.  If you can't afford the vet, then look into programs that help people with HIV care for their pets.  The thing that concerns me is that you said the cat doesn't have any shots.  It's important to watch the cat's behavior to make sure there isn't something more serious going on like Rabies.  God forbid.... but the cat did come from a tree and was presumably on it's own.  Rabies can be cured for people it's just a series of unpleasant shots.  DO NOT mention RABIES to your VET!  The test for rabies for animals is FATAL.  They do an autopsy on the brain to check for Rabies.

On the lesser side there are a whole host of things you can protect your pussy from with just a couple of inexpensive shots.  And if you decide to keep her (or give her away) she will need to be fixed.  Nothing worse then a broken pussy.  You'll have every male cat within 5 miles there the first time she goes into heat.  Your pussy will make the most piggy bottom seem amateur... don't ask how I know this.  It's much more expensive to fix your pussy once this starts... you can only fix her when she isn't actively broken. (in heat).

to the real ladies.... no offense intended... it's just fun to lay down double entendres.  :)

Blah.

a nurse called me back this morning, after discussing the whole situation she wants me to come in to have it looked it and start a round antibiotics and POSSIBLY post exposure rabies shots (based on what the doctor thinks). She said there's been a few cases of rabies in cats over the past few years here in Bexar County(none in dogs) and since I have a few skunks hanging around the area where I found the kitty she thinks it might be prudent to go ahead and start the rabies treatment. I was having horrible visions of shots in the stomach, but she said they are given in the arm and butt now (thank God), 7 shots over 2 weeks.

So anyways, after I finish my coffee and donuts (and wipe all this foam from my mouth) I guess im gonna have to go downtown :(

Ah, so I was right: you're gonna die

ps: also I gave you the correct addy for Five Guys -- you need to go to 260 Basse Road East, nr Olmos Park or to 8603 Texas 151 right off I-410.  I recommend the first location as it's not right next to Cracker Barrel, plus it's next to Regal Alamo Quarry Stadium 16 so you can hop in and see The Twilight Saga: Eclipse or Toy Story 3...

hi will,

okay, glad to hear that you will be checking in with the doc & likely starting a round of antibiotics. imho, this is an appropriate course of action.

but, it does seem that your docs office is taking things a step too far by recommending actual rabies prophylaxis. chances are the kitten is fine if its absent of neurological signs. here's the deal, if you're in texas the kitten is essentially observed for 10 days...if he doesn't break with rabies during that time, you're in the clear. you've already had him a few days of the required 10 making this even easier math: http://www.ci.irving.tx.us/animal-services/bites-and-rabies.html

alternatively, he can be euthanized and his brain extracted & sent to the state lab...probably overkill (no pun intended). my vote, get your pussy examined by a competent vet (including feline leukemia & aids testing) for peace of mind, take your antibiotics, get him vaccinated and enjoy your new friend.

I use to get bit and clawed by my demon kitty all the time. But nothing ever happened like what  happened to you. And my old ID doc use to try to get me to get rid of my cat because of the toxo thing. It's just a shame that I had to find him a new home in order to move to NY.

And keep the kitty. Is it a boy or girl? You know once you name it, it's yours.... ;D

I think he should name his pussy Pandora . Or if they have to test the cat for rabies Ichabod Crane would be a nice name .

<-------- Look over here! that me kitty!

ok, went to Docs, got another Tetanus and they put me on Doxy for 10 days. I avoided the Rabies shots for now...if me or the cat get sick in the next 9 days I have to go in and start Rabies treatment, I would also have to take the cat to the County where they will chop her head off and send it Austin for tests :(

Btw, you too can have impressive guns such as mine. Here's how...Each night when you change your Adroderm patch remove the old patch, cut it in half, spread the contents on each arm rubbing it in very good, then do 3 sets of 13 push ups. Voila! youll see results in no time.

Hey Will,
Glad your keeping the kitty... still not sure if I would name it Matty but hey, its all up to you and of course kitty.

My kitty, Nikki the Bitch Goddess from Hell, was a stray until she found me.  I gave her food, A/C and a nice cushy bed to lay in.   She wound up be one of the many factors my ex and I broke up over.

She kept sleeping on his chest while he napped and covered his mouth and nose with her paw.  Interesting kitty.

Anyway, I know he'll bring you great love and yes... cats do learn how mind.  Its just a matter of if they believe you are deserving enough of their fealty.

She was obviously trying to suffocate him, why wouldn't he just go to a room she wasn't in and close the door?

Will,
I think you be just fine. I adopted a 2 week old stray in April (After I was POZ just before I knew) and let me tell you she used me as a scratching post and chew toy. She was pure evil (Thank God the ex got her in the divorce lol) and also the cutest thing ever wrapped up in one. I can't speak for your health, but I really think you are fine. Cat Scratch Fever can occur, but its an illness the cat would have to have in order to infect you. I can recommend you giving it a bath in Dawn. Its probably too young for chemicals, and you would want to kill anything like fleas or eggs. Also be careful of its droppings because most young cats develop worms. They should go away on its own, or with first vaccination, but in the mean time I would def be careful. BTW I am a huge cat lover and this post both appauled and cracked me up. Keep up the good work lol.

Thx Numbers,

Good to see a fellow cat-lover in this thread! My Lil Matty-Matt is calming down a bit, thank the lord, and I no longer have to approach him with shoulder length leather gloves, and he hasnt drawn blood from me in several weeks :)

He's got a "de-nutting" coming up shortly and he will be getting all his shots and worming stuff then.

The owner never came forward in spite of my blanketing the entire area with signs, so it looks like it's gonna be me and Matty from here on out.

Utter bullshit. I have two male cats. One was neutered when he was not quite one year old, and the other was neutered when he was well over six. Neither of them continued spraying on anything after their operations.

I love cats.  My Tanner was the best kitty I ever had and I miss him so much (had to put him down in Jan 09).  Not only are they great company but a constant source of amusement too.  He should chill out a bit after his little de-nutting procedure.  Spoil the heck out of him!

No, really it's true.  You have to step on them harder though...

This comment reminds of a certain cruel story that was all over da intrawebz back in '06.

Meet The Kitten Killer of Hangzhou.  She apparently made a comeback in 2008.  Hopefully somebody has gotten a hold of this wench and shown her what's good.

Not suitable for Jan, or those with a particularly soft spot for cute furry critters (I for one used to be bothered by it, given that I am a big time animal lover).  I'm sure that Matty remembers this and will get a kick out of it.

Ha! You know you'll keep coming back, so don't even try it.

And even if it was truly through... Sorry, but I am keeping them diamonds.

Here's a cute kitten to make up for the evil link:

I had never heard of the animal cruelty website and I wish I never had.  How could anyone do that to an innocent animal, it's fucked up.

You know no matter how early you take a male cats nuts they still spray your furniture.  Enjoy your pussy!

Not true, as other have said. If you are there loving them when they go down with the anno, and there when they wake up, they will trust that you made the right decision.

I have lots of experience here. I've nuetered male cats (like 10+) with my dad the vet. Did them myself after the anno took effect. It's a barbaric but very effective technique if you do the no-sutures method.

Worst case: bad-ass tom who hated me when I moved into "his" house. I thought I was teaching him a lesson (I was 24)  when I tossed him in a duffel bag on the back of a motorcycle and drove him to my dad's office for the snip. Trust me, that duffel bag got sprayed when he recovered! Obviously I wasn't loving that little fucker.

You will die.
I must say I usually find your comments good but this one is just rude. You WON'T die. But keep it clean and do talk to your doctor.

He's fine, every twink in a 20 mile radius is in danger again.
