Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Hello,
 
I was wondering if you could help me out. I have an HIV Transmission question. Please forgive me if I am asking an inappropriate or silly question.
 
I was wondering if it was possible to be infected with HIV through accidentally drinking my friend's drink which he had finished halfway through. My friend occasionally has chapped lips, but I don't know if they were bleeding at that time. Also, he has poor dental hygiene, and his gums occasionally bleed. At the time, I also had a relatively fresh pizza burn on my gums. I don't think my burn bled the same day, but I know it did the following day, after brushing.
 
Anyway, I realize that normally sharing drinks is not a risk for HIV transmission, but I wonder if my circustances would make it one.

I don't know if my friend is infected, but he lives a more risky lifestyle than I do (in terms of chances of HIV infection).

I think I'm a little nervous because my wife and I (who are in a monogamous relationship) are talking now about having a baby.

Is this an exposure that you would recommend testing for?

You did not have an exposure and you were at no risk at anytime from drinking after your friend. Take the time to read the lessons on transmission. You can find the link in the "Welcome" thread.

Barry, even IF your friend is HIV+, it wouldn't have in anyway been a risk for you to have shared a drink with him, including allowing for all the specifics you have mentioned. HIV is a fragile virus and is transmitted in a few very particular ways. Sharing drinks, food, airborne, kissing or any number of other things people seem to worry about are totally harmless as far as HIV is concerned.

As Rod suggested you need to read our lesson on Transmission.

It's good you have asked this question so that you get down with the realities of HIV. This epidemic is going to be around for a longtime to come and everyone needs to be up to speed about the subject.

Thanks for your replies Rod and Andy. They are very much appreciated. I will be sure to read the lesson on Transmission again and hope that I will be able to share the knowledge with others who are not yet informed very well.

And thanks for wishing me luck on the baby as well.  :)
