Chinese farmer cleared of HIV six ys after testing positive
« on: December 03, 2007, 04:53:43 pm »
every day or almost every day i go to google news and do a search for hiv
and review all the new world articles hoping for good news hoping for a breakthru
i did last night at 2am and nothing
now at 2pm this

have not had time to even read all the details

this seems like it could be a mix up in the blood samples or a false positive

If you don't take the time to read the details then how in the hell do you know if it even belongs in research?

However, confirming that Wen was really HIV-positive is proving difficult. Cai Yong, director of the sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS department within the Jilin CDC, told Interfax today that "there is no established rule that a center must keep the blood sample of an HIV-infected person for certain number of years."

Bimazek,

I want to convey this in the kindest way possible. After reading your post and learning that everyday you " review all the new world articles hoping for good news hoping for a breakthru" I want to suggest something to you.

Given the scope of this website, the moderators and contributors,  especially Tim Horn, we are exposed to all of the credible sources and events medically significant to those living with HIV.

I don't know when you were diagnosed, but I can tell you that early in my dx, I did similarly. I scoured the news daily. Now, I am relaxed. If something important to HIV patients occurs in the world of research or drug development it will make it to these site forums in one form or another most often a blurb or article.

I hope you reach a point where you can relax. If you post lengthy texts  of medical information you haven't read, or cannot process in a meaningful way, envision those for whom you're posting are possibly experiencing this, too. Some of your past posts have been of a scientific order that would require me to go to school in order to assess the veracity, relevance and significance of the content.

Having met him and listened to him give a retrospective talk about HIV and meds, I have a high degree of trust in Tim Horn. His job is to be an expert hunter/gatherer and filter of medical news that is of interest to our community.

I use the time I used to spend researching in 2003-4 on other things, like sleep, walking, eating, reading, working, petting the cat, visiting with family, friends and, activism.

Best regards
Em

Bim,

How can I reply to you as nicely as EM did.

You remind me of someone that has just jumped out of an airplane, and realized that the parachute is not going to open. You start clawing/grasping in the air, hoping to find something to hold onto, so you can safely land. But it's not going to happen. You better hope your reserve chute opens up, because your heading into dangerous territory.

Just my thoughts------Ray

“If all the positive and subsequent negative test results are verified, Wen would be the first person in China to become free of HIV after having contracted it.”

I think I’ll stick that on the windows of my two local Chinese herbalists. They both claim to be able to cure HIV .. or rather they did, until I complained to Trading Standards ;)

I hesitated to join this because a link to a TV news segment about this doctor/herbalist I posted some weeks ago was immediately pulled down by Andy after a few of us jumped on it before I could say "false positive".

I have to admit first I have consulted a few Chinese doctors/herbalists after my diagnosis, and NONE claims to have any "cures". Actually most practitioners will tell you that traditional Chinese herbal medicine does not provide "cures", they provide "remedies". And I don't think there's any argument on the value of some Chinese medical practices such as acupuncture on easing side effects like neuropathy.

I think we just need to take into account cultural differences - you can say that it's all bullshit and not scientific but most Chinese/Asians will tell you that they have in different stages of their lives some experiences with traditional herbalists or other Chinese medical practitioners and have their problems fixed, one way or another. While the case in point is very dodgy and highly dubious to say the least, to use it to junk Chinese medicine and its possible value in helping us pozzies is I dare say a bit unfair.

OK, I said it,... time to tie me up the stick and start the fire.. :D

Who is junking Chinese medicine?

The fact that herbalists you have consulted don’t claim to be able to cure HIV doesn’t mean that others don’t (in the case of our local herbalists they both had posters in the window offering “The traditional Chinese HIV cure” (they also offer baldness cures and present  “photographic evidence” of people with what appears to be Brillo pads -  or is it unfortunately placed clusters of thick curly pubic hair - on their heads).

Some ‘herbalists’ sell snake oil and others provide plausible traditional / complimentary remedies (some of which may even be of help in alleviating the symptoms of HIV and side effects of medication) .. but offering a “cure” when there is no cure isn’t just a “cultural difference”. It is a blatant misrepresentation that is designed to exploit (and which give more scrupulous practitioners a bad name).

Bim,

You have been repeatedly asked not to indiscriminately post links in the Research forum.  Many times now you have posted items that are either linked to denalists, unrelated to HIV or are counter to the spirit of this forum in aiding knowledge and discussion of Research News and Studies.

Can you please consider that you may be causing more harm than good with a large number of your posts?

Bim:

I must admit, I'm glad others have spoken up here, using the kindest words possible.

You and I have communicated, privately, about these convoluted, disjointed and seemingly random postings to the Research News forum. You explained to me that discovering this information gives you hope. I gave you the benefit of the doubt and encouraged you to be more selective about what you post and to put your posts into some sort of clear context. You did this for a while, but you're once again spamming this Forum with posts and links that are of little interest to the AIDSmeds.com Forums community, impossible to decipher and exhausting to keep up with.

I imagine there are some people who are interested in the various reports and links you dig up. In turn, I'm going propose a happy medium: a thread entitled Bimazek's Research News. In fact, I'm going to start this thread now and roll many of your lonely threads into it. And feel free to add to this thread with other reports and links you come across -- and please think carefully about the relevance and community-wide interest in your posts before starting a new thread.

Here's a link to your personal thread.

Tim Horn

Excellent idea. Wading through ever more nonsense in order to find the occasional gem has become really frustrating.
