tallguy, The FJ looks rugged and being a Toyota, I am sure it will last a long long time, but I think it is overkill for a lot of people who are buying for the utility, as opposed to the off road capability.

I think the Element is a lot easier to live with day to day.  Not sure what part of the world you live in, but here in NY, the FJ is like a moose.  Huge blind spots, and very very tall.

I was reading that the 2007 Element has been improved in terms of appearance, and interior utility.  I'd give the Element a serious look.

HEY SO SAD....THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK....I'M IN THE MOTOR CITY SO IT'S ALL ABOUT CARS HERE!  I WAS AT THE AUTO SHOW LAST WEEKEND AND CHECKED OUT THE HONDA AND REALLY DO LIKE IT.  WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT SEVERAL YEARS AGO I DID NOT CARE FOR THE EXTERIOR APPEARANCE BUT NOW THE PAINT ON THE PLASTIC BODY PANELS IS A PERFECT MATCH TO THE STEEL SO IT IS MORE APPEALING.   I SPOKE WITH A FRIEND TONIGHT WHO SAID "CHECK OUT THE TOYOTA FJ,  IT IS ALL THE RAGE IN LA"....I HAVE NEVER BEEN A TOYOTA FAN.....AS FAR AS I KNOW HONDA HAS A SOLID TRACK RECORD FOR EVERYTHING THEY CREATE....SO I AM LEANING THAT WAY.   JUST WANTED TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY BAD HONDA STORIES OUT THERE....I KNOW THERE ARE SOME BAD MRTALLGUY  STORIES OUT THERE....BUT THAT IS FOR ANOTHER THREAD!

BE WELL....

It depends upon what it is that you want to do with the vehicle. If you want to off road it, on a serious level, then the FJ is the only way to go. That is what it is built for. And because that's what it is built for, there will be tradeoffs. Ride, handling, and fuel "efficiency" are not nearly as good as the Element. But, if you do want to wheel it, it can go places that would break the Honda in half. Remember, the FJ is a truck, and is built like one, whereas the Element is a car, in fact it is built on a modified Civic platform, and is suited to driving down the occasional dirt road. In it's favor, though, the interior of the Element is a LOT more versatile and user friendly than the FJ. If it were me, I'd go for the FJ. Sure it's ugly as sin, but the Honda isn't exactly a bathing beauty either, and the FJ will never get stuck. Screw gas mileage....

Hey Carl...
Thanks for the feedback....and you are right on target....I don't do off road stuff although some of the streets in Detroit might qualify as such...lol....but I like the versatility of the Honda (versatile is always good  ;)
so I checked out the Honda yesterday and just might buy one tomorrow.....they are offering a $1,000 auto show rebate and $4,000 for my 2002 Explorer (with 134,000 miles) so that is a $5,000 down payment that will not come from my pocket.   Lookin mighty tempting.....we shall see!

Be Well....

Craig

PS....The color coordinated plastic body panels on the 2007 match the metal parts which I find much more attractive than the older two-tone plastic/metal look which I can't stand at all! And after driving my gas hog Explorer for a couple years I am ready for gas pump relief! :)
