( Now, we just have to continue to fix things that are broken in this state)

ORLANDO (AP)

It's official: Florida has surpassed New York in population to become the third-most populous state in the union.

Figures released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau show that Florida has at least 19.9 million residents. The number is likely higher since the Census uses the population as of July 1 to create its estimate.

New York had 19.7 million residents.

Florida added almost 300,000 new residents from 2013 to 2014. By contrast, New York grew by only 51,000 over that time period.

Florida likely reached the milestone sometime last spring, but it wasn't official until the Census said so.

An Associated Press analysis earlier this year showed that ex-New Yorkers represented about 1 in 10 new Florida residents.

Migrants from other countries made up about a quarter of Florida's new residents.

Florida needs an invasion. I would bet that Yankees account for much of the population increase.

Hopefully the next Yankee move will be Texas. *wumpella shudders* BUT... I have to give them credit for fighting back. A new Tractor Supply store opened up here recently with the normal farm and feed stuff along with YIKES, cowboy boots! I have the feeling sales will be less than desired here. We just never say YeeHaw in these parts. lol.

Won't Florida disappear within 100 years from rising sea levels?

That's why we're thinking of getting a boat, for our much older, sea water soaked years !  We'll be 163 by then, I hope i can still row.  :P

New York City had over 8 million residents back in the 1940's and '50's and then folks started to move to the suburbs and elsewhere.  About 20 years ago there were about 7 million plus but now it is back up over 8 and one half million in population.  Tourism has broken all time highs from the year before for over 10 years now and with business travelers it is as busy as ever, especially of course, Manhattan.

But the rest of NY state is financially distressed with cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and the state capital at Albany.  Buffalo was a major city at the beginning of the 20th century but has dropped off and the winters are brutal in this snow belt that runs across upstate New York.

The three biggest states like California, Texas and  Florida all have several major cities like San Fran, LA, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Miami, Tampa, etc.  And Texas and Florida have no state income tax, which is good for some folks like retirees but not always great for the other residents of the state who require services in health care, education and what not.

That's what I am hearing from any of my remaining friends, that are still in the Buffalo area. I have a sister just east of Syracuse, not much better there either. The last time I was in the Buffalo area was around 2002. It was sad to see what was happening in Western New York .

I think it was over 25 years ago, when discussion came up down here about having a state income tax.  That failed right off the bat. People can't afford to pay a state income tax on the pay that they make.  They don't make enough as it is ! Love those " Right to work " States !   ::)

As I mentioned earlier,  a lot of things need fixing down here ! I wonder if I will see those changes in my lifetime,  but I ain't given up !!   :)

They were talking about this on pbs radio a couple of days ago. I wasn't really paying attention but I remember them saying that will soon change, as Florida death rate surpasses birth rate (for some peculiar reason) whereas NY is the opposite, which will lead to FL losing a seat in Congress.

Hmmm??

Can anyone really say the economy is better in florida than New York though?  I've been to Florida a bunch (mostly to ft lauderdal and Miami sometimes Orlando and just for vacations to lay on the beach and sleep with Cubans) but from what I've seen is a lot of poverty.  Florida, like Arizona and Nevada seems from an outsider to have cultivated a large poor economy based on the service industry.  That doesn't seem like something I would brag about.

Texas, New York, California economies are much more well rounded and not so minimum wage dependent.

I was making a general statement not about anything you said.  Jody posted about new yorks economy and I responded that while Florida may have more people and even more jobs they are in general more low paying jobs and that is not something to brag about.  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

It's also not unique to Florida.  Many of the southern states went the service route in the 80's.  Arizona and Nevada are the two most obvious.  It brought a large influx of people seeking work however they were met with low wages.  If you look at the economies of these states they fostered a large, poorer populous.

Texas avoided this mainly due to oil but the state also went after industry better.  That's a large factor to why Texas has done so well.
