My dog has personality.  Does that mean he has a soul too?

Once a year I teach evolution to 9th graders.  I approach it like this: I start by describing evolutionary process stricly among non-humans.  Once I have them all in agreement that this is the way of things, I introduce primates and humans...And then the fireworks really fly!  Someone always says, "We didn't come from monkeys!"  At which time I have to explain that is not what evolution says, but rather that we share a common ancestor...Somehow, that doesn't go over all that well either!

And for some reason, I try all over again the next year.

If you want to be entertained, watch "Inherit The Wind"  (the old version).  The actual facts of the trial and participants are way off, but it is still interesting.  Check wikipedia for the Scopes Trial to get all the facts.

My question....I'd look at him, give the "whassup" nod, and inquiring subtly while pointing back and forth between us,  "Dude, we cool?"

Would give me ALL the answers I need.

Anyway, one question for all of you cept Matty (cause i thinks i know his answer) a Joan Osbourn song got me thinking once.  If god was sitting next to you on a bus and you could ask him one question what would it be?  (I shall reveal my revelational question later today)

Could you please give Matty a BETTER sense of humor and get him to lighten up a bit?

That would be my question, then it would be "Wanna Fuck and can Val join us?"

I'm still wondering how what the spiritual define as the ''soul'' of a person is defined/explained by the non-spiritual.  Like what makes up the insubstantial parts Matty mentioned.  What about love, hate, bonding, etc...the essence of people?  The intangible parts?

Chemicals released in the brain as well as the electrical activity of the brain.  Emotions are quite tangible in that respect.

I would ask him just one question...  Why can't my daughters always stay 4 and never take me through the dreaded teenage years?  I have a 4 year old angel and a 15 year old who I think needs an exorcism performed on her...

When you break it down yeah.  Just like when you break down the most beautiful sunset over the ocean you have ever seen.  The water is simply Hydrogen and Oxygen.  The atmosphere is what causes the coloration, thats nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, etc.  And then you have the sun, which im sure is mostly Hydrogen.  Doesnt seem quite so pretty when you think of it that way, but it is what it is.  how you VIEW it is different.

Do you see the difference?

EXCELLENT POINTS!

Aurora Borealis was a "mystical light" of the north for many years, till it was explained.  It's still GORGEOUS!

The Grand Canyon is a big fucking HOLE made by water.  Still AMAZING.

Put me in the pagan camp. I've had experiences that personally have proven to me beyond all shadow of any doubt that we have an existence outside of our bodies. I've had an NDE and described things to the nurses later that occurred when they were trying to get my heartbeat back. I saw it.

I could (and have before) go on with other examples. But I trust what I have lived through, and for me that suffices quite nicely.

Tynwald, dear, it's Tynwald. The oldest continuous parliament in the world.

Point taken on spelling my beloved, but the oldest continous parliament in the world is the Icelandic one, the Althing. ;)

As for the substantive matter to hand in this thread, Matty the Damned will answer all questions shortly. He's just a bit pre-occupied with a stupid state election thing. Let me tell ya kids, democracy is a fuckin' joke.

No, sorry darling, it isn't. Tynwald is the oldest continuous parliament in the world, not the Althing. The Althing was established in 930, but discontinued in 1799 (some say 1800) and restored in 1844. Tynwald was established in 979 and has continued uninterrupted since that time.

I think Manx cats traded their tails in so that Republicans can grow their own.

Well Matty the Damned ain't convinced. He can picture Ann wielding a cleaver with maniacal glee as she mutiliates pussies the length and breadth of the Isle of Man. I've no doubt she rounds them up with a birch. I mean look at the expression on that cats face.

To call the brute "surprised" would not do it justice.

Similarly, I'm still not convinced about the Tynwald vs Althing situation. I mean I know the Manx claim their idiosyncratic Isle to be a "separate country" but it's really not. From what I can gather It's kind of like Wales. Just not as ghastly. Iceland is a nation-state, on the other hand.

So the question is, whether or not the Tynwald is in fact a legislature or just an inbreed gabfest that's gone on for 1000 years too long?
