Just started Atripla

I'm on day 3 and struggling.  Does it get better?  Walking into the walls feeling drunk but wide awake.  I've also lost my sense of taste - gutted that chocolate tastes like cardboard (although possibly a good thing).  In fact, everything feels numb not just my mouth.  Slept ok past two nights but I waited until the dizzy fog passed before going to bed.

Does this mean no life for me in the evenings now?

Yes it ges better.

Some tips:

In the beginning it is best to take then immediately go to bed.  Don't take it ahead of time and then wait to go to bed because you will feel the effects and they can keep you from sleeping.

However, that being said it was a good month or two before I could sleep through the night.  The effects in the beginning were pretty significant that they would wake me up in the night.

Long story short, the side effects get better, little by little each day until soon enough they are gone.

Oh one more thing, and probably the most important.  In the beginning MAKE SURE you take it on an empty stomach.  It really does reduce the side effects.  Once you get more used to it you can start being more flexible about that but in the beginning, empty is best.

I've been on Atripla for about 2 years now and last week I ate two slices of pizza right after I took my pill.  I was broadsided with some pretty intense side effects due to it.

Good luck

Oh thanks so much for the advice.  I think I've been doing everything wrong.  Been eating and then taking it right after - I go to bed so early I don't really have much chance to have an empty stomach after dinner but I'll have to take the time to eat earlier I guess.  I was concerned about going to bed before the effects wore off as I have to get up so early so was trying to 'get them out of the way' before sleeping.  Felt so so low this morning, ended up choking back the tears most of the morning at work whilst simultaneously walking into walls/other people.  Felt better as the day has gone on but still dis-orientated.

Ok, I'm gonna try it straight before bed and see how that goes tonight....

Thanks :-)

Also - without being too scientific can you explain to me why having it on an empty stomach reduces the side-effects?  Have felt like throwing up every night.

Secondly - I'm well aware alcohol is not the best plan but my social life is surrounded by alcohol, do you have any tips on this - should I drink before taking the tablet or after etc?  Not planning to be drinking any time soon but do need to have some kind of social life and my friends will think I'm pregnant if I say I'm not drinking lol

Thanks!

Fatty foods Increase the levels of Effavirenz (the part of Atripla that's causing the side effects).  By taking it on an empty stomach (2 hours after the last time you eat) your body will absorb the correct amount of medicine and the side effects will be less.

As far as alcohol goes.  I am not a big drinker but I have found that I can have a few drinks throughout the course of an evening and when I te home at the end of the night I can take my pill and go to bed and it does not have any adverse effect.   If you can, maybe wait a month until the side effects slow down.

I know this time may feel a bit much, but the side effects do ease day by day and soon enough they won't be a bother.  If of course they continue, talk to your doctor and you can try something else but for most it Does get better

Has anyone mentioned to you the rash that often happens about ten days after starting?
